Ww have to have better d line play this year. if they play better our defense will be much improved. even with E johnson gone.

Shayon got into the backfield a decent amount of times he just missed. I am not saying he is a world beater but he is a solid DE.

If he can stay healthy, Gilbert might be the most important addition to the team for the 2013 season. That's a grown man ready to play right now at this level at our biggest position of need. Our pass rushers were an absolute embarrassment last year.

That's the cot**** truth. If you're going to run a grown man defense, you can't expect freshmen, OLBs or relatively untalented players to hold their ground. Like I wrote somewhere else, Gilbert had 9.5 tackles for loss last year. Our ENTIRE DEFENSIVE LINE HAD 22.5 TFLs in 2012.

I know I'm in the minority, but I think we're a couple grown men like Gilbert from being a pretty good defense. I know Corch Duh' is the anti-Christ on here, but with that DL he was saddled with last year, no DC was going to produce a great defense.

With our offense, we don't need to have a top 5 defense.

No he didn't. He's not a DE at this level of football. He's the Jeff Popovich of the DL. Guys who have been fans for awhile remember Freckles having to play Pop at Safety extensively for a couple years. As soon as he brought in better players, Pop became strictly a STs player.

No disrespect to the kid, or man I should say, but he had to have set a record for snaps played without a sack last year.

Chise is right. Shayon is a warrior and deserves a lot of respect for that but he should be a spot player/STs guy.

Anyone have any updates/thoughts on Hamilton? Wish we would have RS'd him last year.

Agreed. But I am not saying he is elite or amazing or anything but a solid DE. He missed on some sacks hopefully he finishes more next year.

If my memory serves me right he should be fine. One of the many reasons he chose the U over Notre Lame is because one of the courses he is taking over the summer, a math course, was accepted for credit at the U and not Notre Lame. Other than that his GPA is fine and test scores good.

You have access to his grades and test scores?

No smart *** it is from interviews he did in the months leading up to signing day on not only Canes sites but local papers up here in the tri-state area. You got anything else smart to say you salty ****? If not relax and stay in your lane.

Anyone saying Shay is solid at DE was def watching games in standard definition last season with green and orange color schemes on that tv.

Not really. I think we'll be a top 40 defense this year. That's not great or what we should be, but it's not horrible. I think, if we had a couple DTs waiting in the wings for 2014, we'd have a chance to be a top 25 defense in 2014 as well. I think a potentially fantastic defense may go to waste in 2014 because Olsen Pierre will be an All-ACC-type DT with basically no one (?) next to him.

Said it in another thread: either Moore or King develop into something decent, Jelani Hamilton adds lower body strength and becomes Pierre between this year and next, or we get a legit JuCo guy to step in. Otherwise, we're going watch Mccord, Perryman, Chickillo, AQM, Figs, and at least 3 DBs waste anywhere from All-Conference to All-American seasons. Defenses don't work without stout interiors. Our style of defense looks like a disaster without a stout interior.

Fixed for ya Mr Morey

From Susan Degnan's interview with Golden this AM:

* Golden expects newcomer defensive linemen Ufumba Kamala and Al-Quadin Muhammad -- "we call him Quan,'' Golden said -- to arrive in time for the first day of fall camp on Aug. 3.
* He also expects DL Julio Derosier, a jr-college transfer, to arrive on time.

Awesome news. Now, everyone cross your fingers for Davonte Bond...

Hey, what's with the trashing of Green? Obviously not saying he's a first-round or even NFL talent, but the kid has battled serious injuries and a change of position. He's a locker room leader and a kid the coaches obviously like. Saw this morning where he and Morris are the UM players Golden is bringing to the ACC meetings. Again, not everyone can be a superstar, but he has a role on the team that may be lost on the message board crowd.
