It isn't about the kid. Pete wants to be known as a guy who knows things. If he didn't, he would just let the news hit and be a surprise to everyone. He drops the hint because whenever it breaks he wants people to remember who said it was coming.

If it's mediocre news - a non-big time commit, a current commit becoming an EE, etc. - the mob will start fires.
