I always try to tell ppl the bolded and ive been watching him play since like 12-13.

When he was younger i use to joke and tell him hes a DE, because honestly he does have some pass rush skills and his body frame was wiry then with the arm length and he would basically have a stroke about it.

Hes not a guy that just likes to mix it up...but if he catches you slipping he will.

With a real technical coach who can coach him up he will do well because the skill set is there and having them coach out going for the "oooh" south florida shoulder hit isnt all that and getting guys to the ground with good form is just as good.

I honestly think the current dc could get the most out of him..hes coachable majority of the time.

Hes a swiss army knife....playing him closer to the line,...have him in the flats...lined up over a te...blitzing a gaps at times. All those things would keep him engaged and maximize his strengths in my opinion.

I think hes dumped on the board...even the plays where he got a personal foul like him tackling against tx am (bs call) it was because of him trying and pressing. Theres some good plays left in him for the next 2 years
I agree. I’m a big fan of his he just needs someone to maximize his talents. I thought Steele had some good ideas with him last year moving him around and I remember his comments about JW being very coachable as well

If I’m JW I’m attaching myself to the hip of Guidry and Kam. He’s still on track to make a lot of money someday just needs to put things together

Judging him on what he’s put on tape since he’s been here is disrespect? I’ll be happy to gas him up when he actually does something really good but so far he’s been very meh. He’s been bad in space. That’s just the truth. Tape doesn’t lie.

If he wasn’t a five star south Florida kid the board would view this take as a consensus.

As for Sam he’d likely start at star where couch played last year. He has no affect on JW.
This mean they see Davis as an outside corner vs slot?

Hoping he’s taking the LSU visit just to play the game before coming here afterwards. If Narduzzi publicly *****ing about Addison for a year didn’t mean anything then I don’t get how this will.

The questions I had with him and others who were much closer was him tackling in space and fluidity. Both have been an issue since he’s been here. The best way to use him is as a Swiss army knife like @gogeta said. He should never be a full time safety. Maybe back in 90’s - 2000’s but not now. He needs moved around and used strategically by down and distance. The closer to the los the better. Which would allow Markeith and Sam ( if he commits ) to get on the field. I like James as a football player just not playing safety full time. There’s too much passing and space nowadays.
This is why I said Miami has failed James. We were so happy to land a 5 star that we let him tell us he’s a safety. Then last year Steele’s defense had zero creativity to bring out his best.

Despite that a true sophomore(JW) was leading our team in tackles, pass defections and fumble recoveries playing with a torn labrum most of the year until he sat out the last game. But apparently he’s trash… no our team is trash and our coaches have been awful. If James fixes his tackling and Guidry uses him correctly he’s an All-American candidate and a first round pick.

News flash to the board Kam Kitchens struggled mightily tackling too but Kam had 6 interceptions. 3 against a terrible ga tech team. He put up the ints and interceptions are like sacks for DLineman you get em you will be praised but he was far from perfect. Go watch the spring game and count the missed tackles. I love Kam both he and James have a lot of work to do. But they were both true sophomores and they led our sorry *** defense. This is the year for both of them to take it to the next level. Let’s hope they do

Completely agree. We told him safety and that’s what helped land him. I seriously doubt he’s a S at UGA. Likely a star or lb. I think the previous staff didn’t want to lie to him and then Mario wanted to be fair and give him the opportunity at playing only safety. This year I see more of a hybrid role that’ll play to his strengths.

I’ve been told. The honeymoon is over and he will be used in the role you’re describing. He will be used similar to how American Heritage used him his senior year. All over the field. The safety only days are over. It’s best for everyone. Now let’s see if Guidry comes through.

One area I think we’ll see a lot more of is James blitzing and rushing the passer. The last two coordinators refused for whatever reason to do so. James can be 3-5 sack guy easily with the right coordinator

If a blind person listens to a game and heard JW tried to tackle they would think he was a double amputee with no arms lol

Why criticize players on a public forum? How does that help anyone? I'm thankful we have JW, hope we can help him find the right role to thrive.
What are you talking about? Do you know what the definition of criticize is?

There is a line that shouldn't be crossed i.e personal insults and trashing players can go too far. But you're smoking paint thinner if you think no one has the right to criticize players.

I hear your point on Kitchens, but thought he really picked up game the second half of season.

It’s a football board and we’re discussing strictly football. Nothing is personal or out of bounds. I called out Kam last year on multiple busted coverages but I also said he’s one of our best players and leaders of the last decade. It goes both ways.

He definitely did but the slow start makes sense because experience matters. The problem Miami has had is that we haven’t developed players so Freshman and sophomores are constantly dependent upon to lead the team. Additionally we haven’t stacked talent on the recruiting trail so 1 5 star is looked at like the savior from the day he steps on campus. There is no true competition pushing him from year to year and more importantly there is no elite elder players mentoring these guys. Mario’s recruiting fixes this problem and will lead to better results.
