Andre Sam, Tulane nickel

Let's be real, we'd be ****ed if someone tried to take one of our better players. I get that he would've had to follow us here, but it would still suck.

I think the cumulative effect is understandably adding to the butthurt levels.

Thought you just signed an aggressive, legit DC to invigorate your defense? Nope. Miami snatched him.
What about the stud upperclassman safety he brought over with him? Nah... he gone, too.

Plus the rumored attempts from other schools to steal their QB... I can understand why Tulane fans would be sensitive and upset. That said, their HC and admin need to relax. They are grown, willing participants profiting off of the same hypocrisy.

I'm in the opposite camp as most in the James Williams argument. Or at least I don't think it's as clear cut as most make it with "move him around" or "move him in the box"

IMO many of his struggles are because he is 6'5 and rangy as **** and it is hard for him to break down and tackle in space. I think he is actually at his best as a pure, rangy free safety that runs/hits/plays centerfield. He is sloppy with all the stuff people complain about because he is just too tall and it's tough for him in space. Let him be a CF, he has ball skills.

I didn't read through most of this thread so I don't know if this has already been said, but didn't he follow Guidry to Tulane? Shouldn't Marshall be mad at Tulane for Guidry taking Sam with him?

This is like a thief stealing a car, having it stolen from them and then threatening to call the police to report a stolen car.

Completely agree. We told him safety and that’s what helped land him. I seriously doubt he’s a S at UGA. Likely a star or lb. I think the previous staff didn’t want to lie to him and then Mario wanted to be fair and give him the opportunity at playing only safety. This year I see more of a hybrid role that’ll play to his strengths.
Reminds me of Greg Blue a bit. I can see that role for him. Blue was a "safety" at UGA but spent most of his time headhunting in the box and blitzing off the edge.

Except James amazing in man coverage on TE and WR. I am hoping that bc of his injury that he played through and our lack of depth is why is play declined.

I’ve been told. The honeymoon is over and he will be used in the role you’re describing. He will be used similar to how American Heritage used him his senior year. All over the field. The safety only days are over. It’s best for everyone. Now let’s see if Guidry comes through.

One area I think we’ll see a lot more of is James blitzing and rushing the passer. The last two coordinators refused for whatever reason to do so. James can be 3-5 sack guy easily with the right coordinator
I expected this last year with Steele. I can understand Manny wanting to move him around, especially if that's why he signed here (to play safety). But, I expected Steele, and his experience coaching hybrid players, to play a part last year.

For as much as people are critical of JW, remember, it's someone job to coach him. He is what he is, which is a big safety who appears to be more impactful the closer he is to the LOS. With our base D having 5 dbs, I'm hoping we use that opportunity to move JW around and actually take advantage of his versatility.

I said TVD would be smart to leave for Bama.

I believe Sam is smart to leave Tulane.

I wouldn’t take either personally.

I see both sides really. You should always want what's best for the player. He would've had a great OL and crazy weapons at Bama, but as a coach you'd like to think you can deliver the same or at least most of that. Bama is a hard turn down for anyone. We'll see if he made the right call.

As for the Tulane guy, he's already doing his thing there, would he here or with the next guy there? I don't know. We've got a good offer with the coach he's comfortable with, so I don't know.

Feelings shouldn't be involved, but it sucks when you've got a solid player and someone farms them right out from under you. It's happening all across the country and I can understand how someone would be ****ed when they've put time into someone.

If they could grab player x, y, and z they would. It's a dirty *** game now and I can respect every side of it. They're all paid to win and you want to hold onto every player that can help you win. You just don't want to be on the losing side too much.

Key thing to me is you've gotta really try and keep these types of players, but more importantly you've gotta make them want to stay.

Communication was so bad last year on defense. Miscommunications leading to an inordinate amount of big plays. Steeles defense was supposed to be structurally sound but what we got was bend don’t break passive defense that broke against any offense with a pulse.

At minimum Guidry is going to attack and confuse some teams. That involves exotic blitzes and moving players all over. I can’t wait to see the defense this fall. Call me crazy but I think our defense can be really good. We saw more creativity in the spring game than we did all last season smh
