A name to keep an eye on

Why don't we just slide Zion Nelson inside to C?
You sure you wanna make this your first post?

So we get a center like this in portal then we have

OT comp: Mauigoa, Bell, Okunkola, Kinsler
OG comp: Cooper, Mauigoa, McCoy, Rodriguez

Mauigoa is starting somewhere most likely tackle unless Okunkola legit steps it up and Bell is looking great. In that scenario it would be:

Okunkola - Mauigoa - Portal - Cooper - Bell

But I think most likely Okunkola portals out in spring and we are looking at:

Bell - McCoy/Rodriguez - Portal - Cooper - Mauigoa

With Rodriguez then SJ then Nino likely being backup center

Without knowing every other OL in the country, it sure looks to be the best **** OL in the country, ... if you follow my logic.

Seriously, what was Mateer thinking, and what QB wouldn't want to play behind our 2 deep OL?

I have to ask a serious question. If Mario and Alex are so good at developing offensive lineman why haven’t they developed a starting center? This will be three years in a row where we’ve had to go the portal for a center. Are we not recruiting the right guys?

They only recruit OTs. That's not a joke. They move HS OTs to OG. Center is the flaw in the logic, so they've been going after transfers.

I take it more that they value experience at the position… SJs development should he a layup for Mirabel and Mario
I hear you but you’re also making my point. We haven’t developed a center yet to start here? Something is wrong when the O-line is what you hang your hat on. We can’t wait on SJ to develop. Mario is going on year 4.

If we land this kid he bridges to SJ who should be ready to go with one year of S&C. What I will admit is they have missed prior to SJ at landing a Center… the kid whose dad was a fan and went to Auburn and Tripp who just left…

Center is a position I feel you can hide with quality guard play… they’ve done an excellent job at the more important positions which is tackle and guard.

Bingo! You’re spot on.

Seriously I believe it could be top 5 o-line in nation real talk. Even the first guys off the bench would be great I'm Samson & Kinsler & Rodriguez. Who would chose Oklahoma o-line is trying to get themselves killed. It's a reason Jackson arnold left that ****

They recruited Connor Lew and he flipped so he can learn to fly planes. They also recruited a dude that chose Saban a few days after they offered. Lew would’ve solved a lot of issues n the oline.

If he is brought in, are we changing the inside zone run scheme? If that's a yes, I am a happy man and bring him in. Reality is, we know we aren't getting away from inside zone and this kid isn't a run blocker.

I also would add that obviously typically OLine take more time to develop and before they are ready to play. Typically only the elite recruits are expected to contribute within 2 years. And almost always the truly elite lineman are almost always at OT. Most top centers are rarely more than low 4 star rated. And OT is more valuable by almost all measures (center more than guard tho imo). So if you got a stud you’d want to start him at OF over Og. Plus in the interior you’re going up against DT not Edges as much. It’s just an entirely different level task asking young guys to push around 330lb DT vs 250lb Edges. And the kicker is center is the most cerebral position on the Oline as well.

So you combine that all with we mostly go for OT builds with like one pure interior build per cycle out of HS and the fact those interior designated guys are usually lower rated and even more developmental and it makes sense why we have had to keep portaging for one interior position.

I would expect one of our developmental guys or just SJ to step up at center next yr.

You can take it however you want. The reality is that they recruit tackles.

They almost landed Lew, got Lee and Carpenter in the portal, got SJ in this class.

It's a really tricky spot to recruit. Remember that the best recruiters get less than half their commits right. They didn't recruit Rodriguez but he is probably not quite good enough, They did recruit Tripp but he was both injured and probably not good enough. The Francavilla kid may turn out to be good enough but he's not ready. SJ is almost certainly good enough. Need to keep stacking and they'll get it right.
