A Canes fan: When and Why for you?

Well the primary reason is I like college football and Im not a gray rekard...

Not that you need any other reason other than that, but Im a lauderhill kid whose parents had season tickets.

Going on 51 years now. 👴

Two older brothers: one a Gator for life the other a Nole for life. So my choice was simple as that.

Saw the Canes beat the Univ. of Tampa Spartans and the great Freddy Solomon in 1974 at the old Tampa Stadium and was hooked for good

45 years. First took notice of UM in 1980 when the Hurricanes were ranked and made the Peach Bowl. 9 wins in 1980, 9 wins in 1981, and then the National Championship in 1983. Pretty much sealed where I was going to college.

561 all day. but started in 07 and never looked back or around for another team even though those seasons where borderline torture, nobody should ever witness their team get blowed in the final game at they’re legendary stadium. Favorite earliest moment was getting fooled by that #1 ranked 08 recruiting class lol. Knew I had an obsession when I bet a friend $50 back in high school that my canes would beat uf in 2013. Didn’t have a dollar to my name but the boys came through for me😂

Grandparents moved to Miami in the early 40’s, grandfather was a carpenter and there was lots of work in Miami. My mom and her family lived in Allapattah and went to Jackson.
Everyone ended up working at Pan Am or eastern. None of them went to college, especially not Miami, but it was their adopted team and has been ever since.

SEPT 1 1973 - I had moved from Maine to UM to finish my last 2 years..decided to go to the Friday evening game with a lovely coed I'd met (likely that day). We were playing UT with ALL American Heisman winner Roosevelt Leaks expected to crush us. Sat on a quiet private bleacher area around the 25 yard line, enjoying 420 time, full moon and cool ocean breeze and watched the amazing upset of the preseason #1 team. It was ALMOST as orgasmic as what happened during and again after the game. I so loved the experiences that I became a Silver Cane upon my return from Colombia and shortly thereafter a Golden Cane and Living Scholar. Still miss the OB and W2 parking lot.

Grew up in Homestead Fl. My 2 brothers and I are hardcore fans! Love meeting people cause of my canes gear, which I wear almost all the time. Canes fans are everywhere! Got to watch games in the old Orange Bowl back in the late 70's early 80's

1988. Freshman year roommate at UNH (New Hampshire) said we should transfer to Miami. I liked the anti establishment image of the Canes. I transferred. He didn’t. One of my best decisions. I chose my school based upon a football team. My wife still thinks that was crazy.

I try to explain to my wife being a Miami fan is different, we’re not like other fanbases corny as this my sound I feel an instant connection with other Canes fans.

Short answer: The fatigues.

Long answer:

First college game I remember as a kid was the '83 OB. Actually wanted NE to win was the only team I knew.

First pro game I remember was the '85 Bears drubbing the Cowboys Thanksgiving day. I was a Cowboys fan.

The '85 CWS made me a Miami fan.

I went to small Catholic school in WI. Mr. T and the A-Team was super popular on Tuesday nights. Every Tuesday all the boys would wear camo pants to school. When Jerome and Vinny got off that plane in the desert I was hooked.

Hated school and almost everyone were Notre Dame fans. Catholics vs. Convicts made it for life.

Irvin and Jimmy went to the Cowboys. Jimmy kept drafting Canes. Winning Super Bowls.

The Cotton Bowl. The Wide Rights. It just kept getting better and better. Thought it would never end. And then George Teague hurt.

10yrs later a 2nd chance to do it again and Terry Porter. The '96 CWS hurt bad. But the '02 Fiesta Bowl was the worst feeling of any sporting event. I literally had that total empty feeling and hurt like someone actually died for days after.

20+ years later here we are still waiting for the U to be back. But at this point I'd be happy if we can just beat WI once before I die.

4th generation Conch, here
Nice to meet a fellow Conch. Born in Key West in 77’ and grew up behind Searstown. Went to Poinciana Elementary and Horace O’ Bryant but started to get too expensive so my parents moved us out in 89-90. From what I’ve heard it’s mostly transplants there now. I haven’t been back in a while but I’m planning a trip soon.

1975 in Key West. Played baseball and across from the park was George Myra's pizza. After every game we use to go there. He had all his stuff on the walls about him at the U. Became a fan right then and there. Never met George I believe his brother ran that place.
Welcome to another Conch

George’s Daddy Jimmy and his mother ran Mira’s Pizza….hung out there a lot.
Conch here as well. Born there in 77’. My family was close friends with the Mira’s and I remember eating at that pizza joint as a kid. I played baseball with Mario right across the street. I was also close with the Menendez family. Jon, who owned Jon’s Hams was my baseball coach for years and a great man. Was also close with the Swift family.

Grew up in the DC area and was a fan from afar in the late 80s. Ended up attending UM in 91 and I’ve been in SoFla and a die hard ever since.

First Canes game was Houston in 91. Never heard anything that loud in my life. I was in the drum line on field and couldn’t hear myself play when they blew the smoke.

You played for Jon’s! Hi Noon Lion here. Mr. Jon ran that team like a professional franchise. He taught 10,11,12 year olds how to hit the ball the other way.
