So Golden's record is ALREADY better than Shannon's, despite having taken over from the WORST HC Miami has had in almost a half century, and having had to recruit under the cloud of a huge NCAA investigation where the media was calling for us to get the DEATH PENALTY.

I mean we are sitting at 7-1, ranked in the top 20, with a **** good shot at winning the Coastal and going to the ACCCG for the FIRST TIME, and people are b*tching because we lost to one of the top 2 teams in the country, with one of the top offenses in the country, in THEIR house.

These dopes have been sitting around waiting all year for us to finally lose, so they could start this sht and feel comfortable that they'd get enough support for it from the other dopes who have been biding their time waiting for us to lose. That 7-0 start was misery for a great deal of the UM message board idiot brigade.

Oh NO doubt. I lulz'd when I came on here Sat night and Sunday and saw all the porsters coming out of the woodwerks. Guys who havent said sh8t all year, or hadnt even registered, felt the need to come in here and start trashing the staff as usual because we lost a game.

Not because we lost, but because we got blown out. Again.

VT actually does have some really good pieces on that defense. But I hear what you're saying. How come our 3 star guys are giving up 500 yards against good teams?

VT actually does have some really good pieces on that defense. But I hear what you're saying. How come our 3 star guys are giving up 500 yards against good teams?

VT always has a good defense, and they've had the same HC (since 1987) and DC (came with Beamer to VT in 1987, DC since 1995) forever. There's a lot to be said for continuity in scheme and recruiting players that fit the system they want to run. Our upperclassman have had a revolving door of DC's and suffered through the Shannon school of player development.

Only F$U and UNC got 500 yards on us, and only UF.ag and GT got 400. We won 3 of those games, BTW. This defense is better than it was last year (admittedly a very low bar), and it's not unreasonable to expect more improvement next year. I'm personally a lot more worried about the offense. We actually have talent on offense.

I think they have a prototype for every position.

They always have small DE's and quick DTs

Smaller, fast LBs who can hit

Physical DBs who just don't give a ****

We don't make every QB look good, but to answer your basic question, our defense just isn't very good. One of our best D lineman is a UVa cast off. We are starting and relying on guys who likely wouldn't even be on the two deep at most FBS schools. See above for why VT has a good defense.

It's a scheme issue

I was a D'onofrio supporter but i see the big picture now....

you cant have a DC who strongly believes that "yards allowed" doesnt matter only scoring defense and expect to ever have an "elite" defense.

I wouldnt mind if D'onofrio left for a HC job after this season.

I have always been in the camp that wants to give him more time. Although I'm not ready to give up on him quite yet, what I am seeing as far as his schemes is starting to become worrisome. On defense we let the opposition dictate tempo and time of possession as a matter of scheme. This is disturbing. I have always been confounded by the yards don't matter philosophy. While that may be true at the end of the game if you are victorious or have not allowed many points, you cannot craft an elite defense going forward with this as your base philosophy. it has always seemed to me that those two (consistently give up big yards yet surrender few points) philosophies are mutually exclusive.

Florida scored 16 points, 6 after a blocked punt gave them the ball on our 10, and 7 after the game was all but out of reach. They could have racked up 19,387 yards for all I care.

while I appreciate and understand what you are saying, I do not believe that you can continuously surrender massive amounts of yards as a matter of scheme and expect to consistently allow few points.

Now maybe D'Onofrio feels that this scheme gives us the best chance of winning with our current depth and talent level. having said that I do find it disturbing that we would allow a team like Wake Forest to control temple and time of possession given their talent level and explosive capability relative to our defensive talent.

FWIW they have been recruiting for their system for 10+ years, every player there on D was recruited to fit their system. We have been recruiting to our system for 2, those kids are FR and SO. Pretty large difference.

At 7-1 we are seeing the difference. And we are young and improving. Randy only won 7 games his last year and his losses were not to powerhouse NC contenders, but jags. And all could see we were headed deeper and deeper in mediocrity. If you don't already see the difference on the field, on the recruiting trail, and in the trajectory of the program, it's because you don't want to.
