3rd down Offense and T.O.P

With the defensive issues the pathetic 3rd down offense and overall Time of Possession were equally if not more underwhelming given the talent and experience on that side of the ball.

Going into the season we all knew the offense was the strength of this team. A SR and Experienced QB and OL. Playmakers galore. Solid WR in Hurns and electrifying freshman in Coley.
This is the unit that needed to carry the team and they didn't

3rd down conversion offense ranked 87th nationally at 38% and TOP was 118 at 25 minutes per game.
Had we averaged a higher 3rd down conversion rate like this offense was capable of doing our TOP would have been around 30 minutes per game.
That's 5 minutes less our defense would have had to be on the field on average.
We gave up like 12 yards per minute. Get back those 5 minutes and that's a difference of 60-65 yards bringing our total yards per game on defense around 355 yards which would have been good for top 35 in the nation.
Don't get me wrong, the defensive issues would still have existed but overall we would have controlled the games more through our offense like they were capable of doing.

Lot of other factors to consider, but a pretty valid point with data to back it up.... cant wait to see this thread when I get back from work. Should B fun.........

The Defense made the offense worse on top of the other real issues on that side of the ball like player injuries also James Coley's been here for 1 year, Dorito/Golden's defensive scheme has been here for 3 years.

I know ur a Golden slurper but lets not try to throw the offense under the bus b/c it didnt come from Golden b/c if it did you would be crowning Goldens great offense and defending it every chance u get. smh

We sucked since 07 with TOP...
hurry up and score quick wear out your young D offense

3rd down is on play calling and execution...dropped passes etc...I would like the stat on our avg yardage on 3rd down...it seemed to me all year
we ran the ball great...then lost a yard or two on first down, panic on the 2nd and long go deep, then 3rd and long throw two yards short of the marker...

Point taken and understood, but it is hard to quibble with an offense that averaged 32 points a game (Sav St not included).

QB is the problem
Since Golden's been here we haven't had a efficient QB...Morris being way less efficient than Jacory esp on third downs
I have faith that our next QB who ever it is will be a major upgrade in that category

Please explain how it's the defenses fault that the offense couldn't convert on 3rd down?
If the offense wanted the ball more they should have held on to it when they had it by converting more on 3rd downs.
Also, the defense gave the offense the ball throught the 27 turnovers they caused.
There is enough blame to throw around but the offense being the strength of this teams deserves some it due to their putrid 3rd down conversion rate and TOP which had a down stream affect to defensive side where the less they were on the field the better it would have been overall for the team.

We should have converted third downs at a higher rate, sure. But you can't win the time of possession battle if your defense is giving up 80 yard, 9 minute touchdown drives every time they're on the field. C'mon man.

Scoring quick is not the problem. Quick, non scoring possessions, is a problem.

This is it right here. If we score everytime then we'd be fine. But it's those 4-5 possessions a game where we run 3 plays, move the ball nowhere, and only use up 20 secs off the clock. Next thing you know our ****** defense is getting ran all over.

no one is saying to win the TOP battle., but at least make it an even 30/30 like most teams manage to do with overall less talented and experienced players.

And just so no one is confusing this as a deflection of blame from Golden, this also falls directly on Golden and something he needs to fix next year.

I like stretching the field as much as anyone. But, if you throw deep for a living, you still have to make first downs in order to have repeated chances to do that.

It always reminds me of a running back like Emmit Smith. He had a lot of long runs (even though he wasn't a speedster), he picked up a boatload of first downs, giving him another set of downs to break a big one. I don't like dink and dunk. But, you have to be able to extend drives. TOP will take care of itself.

Ain't nothin' gonna stop the Dorito 500. Not rain, not snow, not sleet. Definitely not 3rd down conversions on offense.

This is an issue that absolutely has merit. Its not to suggest we dont have major problems on defense, but this offense was wholly incapable of sustaining drives and having any consistency. It was feast or famine. Quick strike scores, or 3 and out most of the time. This did our defense NO favors at all, in what was already a trainwreck of a defense. I agree had we been more consistent on offense, the defense would have worn down less, and we would have been a bit better overall. That's not to say it would have been good, or even average, but maybe slightly below average, rather than attrocious.
