2014 starting defense

Feels good not seeing aj and Rodgers in those lineups

I'll feel even better if I don't see Armbrister in our 2 deep. Plays his heart out, but should be a special teams player... I'm hoping the infusion of new talent will make that happen.

Anybody who thinks Chad Thomas is a 3-4 DE does not know anything about football

Well, not now of course. He has the frame to grow into one though. I think we'll see him at SDE (Chick's position) on passing downs.

I wouldn't put it past the coaches if they played Chad at WLB (AQM's position) on some downs.

Don't know why we are even talking about this. We all know what the depth chart will look like opening day !! Whether we agree with it should be the discussion. It is evident that the staff wants to run a 3-4 but they will never come out and say despite us playing it more and more. Golden will continue to say we are a base 4-3 multiple defense to not scare off recruits ( lmaoooooo) and put out depth chart in a 4-3 format. It will most likely look like this:

DE: Anthony Chickillo, Jelani Hamilton or Chad Thomas
DT: Michael Wyche or Clavin Heurtolou,Earl Moore
DT: Olsen Pierre, Anthony Moten or Corey King
DE: Ufomba Kamulu, Alquadin Muhammed
OLB: Thurston Armbristor or Tyriq McCord , Trent Harris
MLB: Raphael Kirby, Juwon Young
OLB: Denzel Perryman, Jermaine Grace or Darrion Owens
CB : Tracy Howard or Antonio Crawford
CB : Ladarius Gunter or Artie Burns
S: Deon Bush, Jamal Carter
S: Rayshawn Jenkins, Kiy Hester or Marques Gayot

Nickel ( my guess)

DE: Chad Thomas
DT: Chickillo
DT: Moten
DE: Tyriq McCord
OLB : Perryman
OLB : Grace
CB: Tracy Howard
CB : Crawford
CB : Burns S
S: Bush
S: Jenkins

When we go 3-4 :

DE: Chickillo
NT: Wyche or Hertolou
DE: Olsen Pierre
OLB: Tyriq McCord
MLB Perryman
MLB: Kirby
OLB : Muhammed

i think this defense is gonna be good.

thinking about things in a 4-3 or 3-4 binary is limiting though, this stuff is gonna be pretty fluid.

there's a lot of talent here everywhere except up the middle, but as has been pointed out we were actually not bad there last year.

In regards to Chad Thomas growing into a 3-4 DE...

Look at Alabama. Do they recruit 240lb kids and turn them into 3-4 DE's? No. Why? Cause that's retarded.

At 6'5" he would need to gain a minimum of 50 pounds and we'll be sitting here 2 years from now waiting for him to contribute.

He's the prototype 3-4 OLB (or 4-3 DE). He'll be 6'5" 265+ and a complete terror off the edge.

He doesn't have the body of a 3-4 DE.

I think it's entirely too early to tell what he'll grow into or not. His frame is enormous and he hasn't begun to fill in. His workout regiment up to now has been very light. He may put on 20 pounds on his lower body alone. He has a chance to be 275+. If he gets there, it wouldn't surprise me to see him used in Chick's role at some point. There have been a good amount of guys who grow from DE/LB into actual DTs in the NFL. It wouldn't be that unusual.

He needs 50 pounds and IMO we'd be wasting his talent.

Go look at the guys Bama signs for 3-4 DE.

He would need atleast 2 years to put that much weight on, all the while he'd be sitting on the bench or playing a totally different position, in which case he'd have to adjust to 3-4 DE once he gained the weight.

If they attempt this with Chad, they are a bigger fail than even the data shows they are.

Nobody calls me a fizzle and gets away with it! Except that one time that guy called me a fizzle and ran...he got away with it...

My point is I think it's premature to guess what his body will do. His frame is impressive. I'm in no way saying put him at a position where he has to wait 2 years to fit. Play him where he makes an impact now and adjust if/when he grows.
