The difference is the DC interviewed him. That’s the important part.

He can decide that this guy can execute his scheme. Something Mario likely cannot do like he did in the past hiring coaches without even having a coordinator in place
This is what made Cristobal's first hiring cycle at UM so bizarre. IIRC, many of the position coaches on his first UM staff were hired before the offensive and defensive coordinators. He's not perfect, but this was a necessary adjustment and hopefully it pays off.

10 pages late, I know. But, this guy is pretty good.

Always worry about fit and finish with coaches sometimes, but he produces pros and good units most of the time.

Recruiting DBs down here is going to be hard, and I hope he's up for the job.

Does he have any connection to Hetherman ?

I'm not trying to be a debby downer but we've been down this road before where we hire a couple hot names and it turns out they can't work together.
I think people on here put too much into the ties thing. We had a db coach last year that had ties to our DC and our secondary looked more confused than ever.

Can someone explain to me why you would split a DB room with two coaches? Is that very common because I always thought one coach had the whole secondary but recently it seems all rooms are split.

I feel o like that would cause confusion. Are nfl rooms split?
Zac Etheridge specifies in Safety Coaching.

If we brought in another DB Coach it would be for someone who specifies in CB's.

Rather than have 1 guy try to cover the entire Secondary, it’s easier to have 2 guys just run their rooms & correspond with the DC.

CB's & Safeties have different responsibilities & it’s a lot more difficult to teach both groups from a technical standpoint if you don't have the experience doing both.

It makes more sense to have 1 LB Coach & 1 DL Coach. You don't need a DT & DE Coach, they have same responsibilities & nearly the same assignments.

Interesting - so you think he’s the safety coach and maybe a diff title on top of that?

The only other titles they could give him would be Co-DC, or Defensive Pass Game Coordinator.

Idk what the plan is, but if they do bring in another DB Coach, it will just depend on who it is.

ZE can Coach either CB's or Safeties, but he's better as a Safety Coach, it's what he did at Houston (the first go round) & Auburn.

If it were me, I'd pair Etheridge with a guy like Sammy Joseph to help keep the Louisiana pipeline open, but that's just me, idk nothing.
