Would you start Nickel and aim for 7-8 wins?

I think we'd go 8-4 regular season with Nickel with a chance to win 9 depending on who we play in a Bowl game.

IF we can't entice a big time starter to come here before Spring camp, then I'd be good with rolling with the Jefferson coin.

We wouldn't win 7 games with Emory at QB, even with a fixed Defense & a stacked roster, we'd AT BEST be a 4 win team with Emory.

Which is why I was so vehement in the idea even being pitched at him being the guy for next year.

But from now until the start of Spring Camp, Mario needs to scour the Earth for any QB with prerequisite arm talent that he can find.
Jefferson? Kj?

The narrative that it’s ok to fall back to 7-8 wins in Year 4 would only happen from the Crusaders of Saint Cristobal. Any other coach and it would be unacceptable.
The next step is when we start debating whether it’s cool or not to root for losses just like every other coach the last 25 years

While I’m not as optimistic on the win total, if we don’t get a guy that gives a chance to compete for ACC championship next year. I agree we should roll with Nickel.

There is risk that we would be 6-6 or 7-5, but there’s also a chance Nickel shows promise over 2nd half of the season to give us the Lagway effect in recruiting and portal next year, knowing who the guy would be for the next two seasons.

**** no. This isn't the NFL where you benefit via the draft by having a poor win/loss record to let young guys develop. This is a make or break year for Mario. 5, 7, and 10 wins. Need to at the very least get back to 10 wins and a chance at ACC title game/CFP.
This!!!!!!

I think he will be better from the start than he is getting credit for right now.

Very important to this is a new DC and secondary
I agree.

I think he could be really good during his freshman year. He’ll need a good OL and run game to go along.. which Mario has been consistent with here.

Him being a EE or not I think will be a big factor

An 18 or 19 year old freshman is coming in. Let’s be realistic. We better find someone. So far we missed on a lot of portal transfers that would have really helped. We are in deep cah cah….

a lot of ****ting on carson beck and Mendoza the last few weeks - either of those with a new DC and we win 10 at least next year

hopefully, ewers makes himself available, or someone out of left field. if not, I feel like Dawson will go with Emory against ND over Nickel due to experience and that is a game that will be hard to watch

As opposed to what?

Over a proven, top 25% QB in the country? No.

Over what’s currently on the roster? Absolutely.

This. And the ultimate answer to this question is to how Nickel looks when he gets here and sees competition in practice. If he's pretty much immediately starkly better than Emory/Judd, then you probably roll the dice and go with him...especially if players gravitate to him early on and he has that "it" factor about him.

If he's not really any better than the other guys, then you desperately find the back channels and find a spring portal guy to be a stop gap until you either 1) develop Nickel or 2) Dareon Coleman shows up or 3) you can dip in the portal next year for a stud.

Those are the legitimate scenarios, best and worst case.
