Worse recruiting experience

^^^ Exactly 1977. Antone Smith was a kick in the mouth. Guy was all Miami, a guy we really wanted and everyone was excited about, etc. Then, he puts on the Nole hat and his mom basically runs out of the room crying she's so upset. To this day that ****es me off. In hindsight, he really did nothing at FSU, but at the time, it sucked.

He was a bust like all FSU rbs are now i admit i was a little too young back then since im just 22 but the Matt Thomas one eats at me. Its just about respect when you dont have interest in your hometown team just out of respect be real but now you're a no good puss *** liar that's not a man that i can ever respect

Antone is the biggest shock I've experienced. Matt Thomas ****ed me off more, but it was utter disbelief from everyone when Smith picked FSU. The William Campbell thing was interesting, someone on Grassy who had been 100% nails was saying he told coaches he was coming.... I suspect even our coaches were fooled on that one. Osa Nosa was some extreme signing day drama, crying and signing his LOI with West Virginia.... but that was before the internet was mainstream and you had to follow the drama on pay-by-minute phone calls to recruiting services & Canesport magazine. Some other dramas that stick out in my mind - Albert Poree, Jon Capel, Jon Colon (Coach Squeak), Richard Gordon, Lesean McCoy (who hadn't been mentioned with us at all), the Louisiana kids (Craig Davis, Daryl Johnson, Laron Landry, Kirston Pittman) all telling websites that they were coming here. I remember websites convincing Cane fans that Pat Watkins/Cro Thorpe were gonna be Canes. You don't remember them because they flamed out, but Clifton ****son and Trevor Ford were brutal losses to FSU at the time, as was JR Bryant (I think his situation was settled long before signing day though). Preston PrettyHair wasn't a signing day thing but another sting.

Then you have the "first commitment curse" kids, dating back to Randy Boxill and including guys like Keef and Louis Nix, along with the "dream school" kids like Tim Williams and Kyle Moore. (Lots of DL are the "dream school" kids who end up elsewhere).

Good list, swag. I do recall all of the Tally kids we've lost - at one point, I think every one of them committed to our coaches...Rouse, Watkins, Crappy, Vanover, Simms.

I remember the beach picture of Gresham throwing up the U, which will get bundled with the Thomas U at the UA game as fake U throwers. Then there's the wardrobe traitors - Antone's slippers, Alex Collins wearing O&G everywhere, .... hopefully we don't have to add Lane's beanie to this list.

And of course the ones we DID get were Ryan Hill and Greg Threat....

Good stuff swag. There are a couple that you mentioned that I have to write about. To this day, Richard Gordon's interviews with Bakas a day or so before NSD are the craziest interviews that I've ever read. Dude threw out some crazy *** percentage of him signing with UF while at the same time mentioning that Miami put more guys in the league. LMAO

Kyle Moore is the craziest announcement that I've watched. Kid was literally glowing while he talked about UM and then proceeded to pick USC. The reason it didn't bother me that much was because I wasn't extremely high on him anyway. With that said, his announcement definitely left me scratching my head.

the whole lesean mccoy thing was bad to me. Everyone knew he was an nfl talent. Just wish we wouldve had a better shot at keeping him

Yeah, according to an insider, he was coming and then was basically pressured into going to BC. Remember how we were told to "look at how stressed he looked during his announcement" and to use that as proof that he was forced to sign with BC.

He was pressured, but I also remember reading that he loved the school, loved the coaches, but felt that it was a bit too urban for him. That was the story, anyway.

The Craig Davis, Landry, Pittman, et al reminds me of the year of the Ohio contingent nearly committing to us - Fred Davis, Ginn, et al.

Guys like Capel and Colon were really in a league of their own though. Those were some amazing clown shows.

Antone was a smack in the face, but that falls more into the MT, Alex Collins type situations, where everyone had convinced themselves that these guys were coming here, and they ditched us. Patchan was another slap, after all the legacy bullsh*t, and talking smack about the players, and his friendship with Marve. Guess he got what he deserved.

I guess I'm just confused as to why people keep listing Patrick Johnson/Peterson. We all knew this kid wasn't coming to UM long before NSD.

Yes, by the time January came around, I think everyone was convinced he was LSU bound, but I remember the renewed hope that some people had over hearing the report that he showed up to campus (unnannounced) to talk to Shannon about possibly coming and Shannon wanted no part of PJ that day - refused to see him.

Smartest thing Corch did, we probably would get the death penalty if we met his monetary demands.

From what I remember, PJ wanted to smooth things out with Corch and basically have 1 on 1 conversation with him to see if there was room in the class - he wanted in. The problem with PJ wasn't PJ - it was his entourage (and dad, specifically). This was the first time during his recruitment that PJ tried to distance himself from his entourage but Corch wanted no part of it.

I remember getting ****ed when I saw Patrick Johnson/Peterson choose LSU at the Army game. I still had myself convinced that he was pulling a troll job and would pick the U up to that point. It wasn't difficult to convince myself because BigConch would post 5 times a day stating that he was all Cane. And by that time we had already alienated Janoris Jenkins. That one stung more than Antone to me.

Thomas wouldn't even be top 5. Antone Smith, Matt Patchan, Patrick Johnson, Bryce Brown, William Campbell (Michigan), Sheldon Richardson (Missouri). These are all guys that were committed or told the staff they were coming then went elsewhere on NSD. Thomas never even lead on that Miami was near the top.

i havent heard about Richardson, care to elaborate?

looking at some of the players we lost, it looks like the majority of them were bust which brings up the question, did we get save from some over hyped players or did the other schools not develop the talent?

I think in general it just indicates that kids who **** around with people a lot during their recruitment tend to have some concerns that end up hurting their football careers, whether it's being a goof-off in general, having a warped sense of entitlement, lack of work ethic, poor classroom ethic, or just a bad attitude that sends you to the coach's doghouse (or police blotters). Obviously there are some exceptions, but from what I've observed the last 15 years it seems like the flameout ratio is significantly higher for kids that act like Keef did this past year.

Noel Devine stung, but he was never getting in. Lesean McCoy's antics were annoying though it seemed to be general knowledge that he wasn't coming. BBrown again, annoying, but kid was a headcase, but a headcase in the NFL. Be interesting to see how Collins does, they'll probably work him into bone dust.
