Those two AH CBs are not the kind of players that sign with us.
Wow, that’s a new one. They went on to sign w the two teams that just played in the national championship. Those aren’t the types of kids we want to sign with us? That’s Manut Bol level reach there
Nope. He"s right. A friend of mine, now deceased, used to tell me the marquee players are not UM's players. I've been following UM recruiting since the mid-80's. There is dough revisionist history about UM recruiting, thinking we just cleaned up on 5 stars. That was never true. We did get a 5 star here, a 5 star there. Mainly we built our program on very good players, kids with potential, who just kept on better and better at the U. We outworked everybody else and had more heart than everybody else.
When we recruited Jessie Armstead, we got everybody's best player, the top 5 star. I think Darren Smith was in the same class and I'm not sure he wasn't better as a freshman.
A better comparison might have been D.J. Williams and Jon Villa. Their first August, I started to hear reports about how Villa was better than Williams. Vilma was just some local kid from Coral Gables, Williams was the top HS player in the country.
Look at this kid who just left--the five star from Sacramento. He had what, a hundred offers, or so he claimed. What happened to him?
Today was just like so many other days I've seen over the years. We were always spurned by the rock star recruits, going back to the dud, Sterling Palmer from Broward in the '80's. And we got Russ Maryland, who almost nobody wanted, who became a real star. In comparison, Jordan Miller was recruited like a superstar in comparison to Russ Maryland. Even though there might be fewer hidden gems now in comparison to the '80's, I think Jordan Miller might prove there still are.
I do think our coaches might have been over confident, thinking we would get our targets and keeping Norton and McIntosh. They did not have backup plans. They should have been looking at Jucos. I'd rather have a Juco who can play rather than a fairly average red shirt senior transfer.
As far as getting elite players, what really was the story with D.J. Johnson, or whatever his name is? So much fanfare coming in, but so little talk going out. Did not even last a year.
