Who's transferring???

well, it is good to see that we are able to turn away a high school All American at the QB position.

it sure is better than having a safety waste two years as back up QB (Highsmith) or burning a redshirt on a QB who wasn't ready (Morris) due to lack of depth.

What's annoying was playing Morris at all in 2011.

What were our options? And the way it looks now, even if he didn't play in 2011 he'd wind up leaving after a monster 2013 season with a season of eligibility remaining.

Not blaming the coaches or anything but the NCAA for suspending Jacory for the opener. Just annoying.

He played after that opening game at various points in the season. At the end of the day, it probably doesn't matter if we saved a year of his eligibility because he's going to blow up this year and be gone even if he had an extra year of eligibility in the bank.

As per Barry Jackson's column:

"UM's Al Golden does not pull scholarships from players unless they've committed a violation,...."

I thought this to be the case, but then I hear so much speculation on the internet about "cleaning house" and "roster management." Even some of the comments on this thread sound as if posters think guys who aren't good enough will get "shown the door."

Your first mistake is listening to internet bullshyt. Corch Al has proven that he doesn't run guys off unless they've broken rules and are disrupting the team. If he was into running guys off who were unproductive we never would have seen the success stories of Davon Johnson, Ben Jones and Jeremy Lewis.

Makes me long for the days of roster with the likes of Jim, Jim and Jim.

This is one of his biggest strengths as a coach, turning a plane full of rubber dog isht into found money. I like that he refuses to give up on dudes no matter what their circumstances have been. A dude like Tommy Streeter owes AG his entire professional footballing career, wherever it ends up.

When Jacory Harris was suspended..I guess we should have had a QB competition between Ray Ray Armstrong & A. Highsmith the week before Maryland, instead of playing Morris... Same goes for the bowl game against Notre Dame....

Agree with Franchise post. Its clear that Golden gave him a list of schools he could transfer to in order to throw some feelers out there and got no one to bite. Surprised his HS coach Ty detmer couldnt convince a Texas school like SMU or Rice to take a shot. Maybe he wanted a guarantee that he could get a legit shot to be the starter and most teams were telling him he could compete to be the backup and nothing more. Mide as well stay at UM if you gonna be a backup at some no name school. Ask Kirby Freeman and Taylor Cook.

You don't have to pull a kids scholly to encourage them to go somewhere else. I am sure Golden has had a few conversations like "You're fourth on the depth chart and I don't see you ever moving up. We would grant your release if you wanted but we are not forcing you out." Some will take it, some will stay and be career backups. Some kids will just want to play FB and that's more important than being at the U. Golden knows that and gives them the opportunity.

I don't think anyone ever suggested Golden would flat out tell people, you are going to transfer, bye and then pully their scholly. But every coach even "nice guys" like Golden have ways of encouraging kids to move on if he feels they aren't contributing to their ability or have become complacent/lazy.

You're wrong on the bolded part. Plenty of guys think that's what The Don either does or should do.

I wasn't really talking about message board hero's, was mainly talking about media, players, former players.

I think Golden does it the right way. As long as the kid isn't being lazy or have suspension issues I see no reason to pull a scholly. I can see where others want to make the cut and bring in fresh meat though.

I never implied that the coaching staff did anything wrong with playing him. They had, too. Just ****ed off at the NCAA.

I'm not necessarily writing him off, but he ask for permission to talk to other schools and permission was granted. I'm just looking at the numbers, we will have 7 scholarship QB's next year...not including the walk-ons. Seems like a lot. My point was, if he decided to leave his scholarship would be put to good use. But, fully I understand your point on the QB position will be a position of need next year, but not necessarily in numbers but someone stepping up and taking the reigns over from Morris. Go Canes!

Dewey deciding to ride it out as the fourth string QB and not transfer...would've love to get that scholarship and use it in an position of need.

Once Morris leaves, QB is a HUGE position of need. They obviously felt Dewey was worth a scholarship in the beginning so keeping him around to push for the job next year is fine.

You can't write this kid off already.

Was it Maryland last season that went through 3 or 4 QB's and had to play guys at QB who shouldn't have been playing? Not saying that would happen here, but there's always that chance. Good for him for sticking it out. I hope he works hard, graduates, and is productive in other ways for the team. You don't have to be in the 2-deep to contribute.

Dewey is a smart kid and good to have around the program. Maybe he will never start here but that doesnt mean he won't make the other QB's better.
