What is a realistic prediction for this defense?

LMAO, someone has hacked Wild cats account... 25 rated D, that there is some funny ****.

Wildcat must not be thinking clearly after getting to sit down with D'ohno.

It's like Pete and his interviewees. If they show him love and lets him interview them (Kayaa and Tyre Brady) then he hypes them up like no other. Since Doritos sat down with Wildcat for an extended period of time, everything is all gravy now and we'll have a top 25 defense.

I'm sure Doritos does understand the X's and O's but that doesn't make him a good coach/teacher. Maybe this stuff comes naturally to him, but he can't communicate it properly to the players/staff beneath him.

In this staff's 3rd year here our players were making mistakes as if this was the first month of a new system. Still can't get to the right zones, still not checking receivers crossing, just flat out blown assignments. For him to be so smart why are these mental mistakes still being made on a regular basis?

It has nothing to do with him giving me the time of day. I watched the film. I watched our players ***** up simple assignments.

With that said...

I already stated that either (A) he's not a good teacher or (B) he's doing too much.

There's still some things that I think are unsound and/or make me scratch my head a little bit but overall our concepts seem to put our kids in the right place.

Dude you know I respect you, but you done bumped your head.

LOL.

I'm tellin ya!

Watch!

It is going to be bad bc of the schedule - outside of our own division look who comes off the schedule and who comes on - with their national ranking on points scored
Off Wake 117th Nation in Scoring - On Louisville 26th ----- yes they lost their QB but Petrino will torch us
Off USF 123rd - on Cincy 48th
Off Gators 114th - On Nebraska 49th

This team could easily start the year 2-8 ------ Cincy took Louisville to OT last year !!!!!

If you think we're starting 2-8 you're insane

I think we'll finish top fifty in yards because we'll give up crap yardage to some teams near the end of games like usual. I don't think they'll be the anchor of the team but I do believe for the first time in a long time that our defense will be much better.

I don't typically believe in addition by subtraction because experience matters but a lot of playing time the last two years has gone to players who wouldn't see the field on top programs. Defense is much better conditioned, offense is better and will stay in the field longer with our rb and receiver depth. Defense has gotten a lot faster and now we actually have a pass rush. There's no reason. For anyone to think we wouldn't get better

We brought back virtually the entire two-deep on defense. That's an extra year of experience and strength & conditioning for everybody. None of the guys we lost were impact players. We've seemingly upgraded our weakest positions from last year: safety and linebacker (inside & outside).

God bless Gaines, Cornileus, Rodgers, and Highsmith, but they all lacked range, instincts, and tackling ability. That's a terrible deficit for safeties/linebackers. Why did they play? My guess is they knew the defense the best, but they didn't have the talent to translate it to the field. And Shayon Green was a warrior and a model citizen, but he had zero speed off the edge. Zero.

If we're not top 30 this year, we probably never will be under Golden.

1. I think our secondary will allow for more blitzes, aggressive D- something that we could not do before.
2. Grace gives us a LB that can cover a tight end FINALLY and Perryman is a beast
3. DL is a huge question mark but there is promise with Chad and hopefully Chickillo will have a year that we have all been waiting for.

I think we are 40-50 defense this year.

Simplify it, adjust to the players you have and get it done.

This is what boggles my mind.. There was no amount of adjusting to Gaines, Green, Cornelius, Highsmith, Rodgers, Robinson, Armbrister that would have amounted to anything better than what we've witnessed the last few seasons.
My question is, if Highsmith, Gaines etc were so bad and were handicapping the scheme, then why were they starting. Why not start the younger guys if they are more athletic yet will make the same mistakes as those less talented than them?

Dunno. My guess that it was a zero sum game. And seems like Golden sides with SR's when it is. Also think he made a pact with the kids that stuck it out through the turmoil and wanted to reward them. You heard the younger players make reference to it all year that they were playing for the seniors and it was their team.

I'll tell you why and it's fairly simple. Occam's Razor says that the old guys were better unless you think Golden wants to lose. Just because the younger guys have more inherent talent is meaningless if they can't even line up and don't know where to go. As recently as the bowl game it was evident that McCord (for instance) could not even consistently line up playing the hybrid LB position. That is the issue with discussing all the talent and lack thereof. Our system thus far has proven challenging for young guys so there's no reason "yet" to think that an influx of new young guys that won't know where to line up and will play and look slow due to confusion is going to matter.

And the idea that Golden wanted to reward guys who "stuck it out" is nonsense. It was easier for them than the young guys. The old guys weren't even coveted and would have to sit out a year if they transferred. Guys like burns and Jamal and Kirby and McCord opted to COME HERE with uncertainty when they could've gone elsewhere. That logic is some confabulated nonsense to obscure the more plausible explanation that Golden thought the old guys gave him the best chance.

But, can Occum Razor play DT?

And this staff couldn't notice that during practice or games? Either they played because Golden let seniors play, or they played because they were better than the back-ups. Either way it doesn't reflect too well on Golden & Co.

We'll be better. It would be hard not to be statistically. But I doubt we'll be Top 30 defense.

I don't think we'll see that much improvement Able. Highsmith, Cornelius, Rodgers, Green, yeah these guys sucked. But you know what? Guys are running wide open in our defense. Dudes are out there catching passes without anyone within 10 yards of them. That's not because Cornelius or Highsmith are slow or have bad instincts. It's either blown coverage or terrible scheme or both. Putting a faster player out there isn't going to fix those problems.

I expect to see an improved defense this year due to better talent. I don't think we're going from worst all time miami defense to top 30 in the nation.

I'm sure they noticed it. The alternative is to throw guys out there who aren't ready to play.

There are definitely glaring reasons for pessimism.

But I think upgrading HALF of the defense (Green, Gaines, Cornileus, Rodgers, Highsmith) will make a big difference. Having 5 guys out there not being able to make an impact has a cumulative effect. People were clamoring for more man coverage last year. A lot of our biggest issues were in man coverage. We played a lot of man against Wake, VTech, Duke, and Louisville. You gotta have the horses to play man. Our CBs were pretty solid most of the season, but our safeties and LBs couldn't cover. And we were getting zero pass rush from Green.

Bottom line: Golden has pretty much everything in his favor this year. If he can't field a good defense with this group, he can't do it here.

I feel like what we saw at the beginning of the season, will go a bit further this year. Pressure, turnovers, sacks. Once we lost that pressure up front it was complete fallout. I'm cautiously optimistic.

OMG - "what we saw last year at the start of the season" was
FAU 6-6, Coach on drugs & play like a 1AA school
FLA 4-8, Lost to 1AA school
Sav State 1-11 1AA School
Sth Fla 2-10
Ga Tech 7-6
Wake 4-8
The best offense we played in the first 6 games was Ga Tech - the second best team we played at the start of last year by record was FAU !!!

ncn has a point.

Yup. My point still stands though. Not necessarily about results, but you could see the whole team especially up front wear down. Couple that with a increasing level of competition and it was a disaster.
