What is a realistic prediction for this defense?

Our schedule is not that difficult. I'd say 50 overall defense, Scoring 40. That is still unacceptable. In any case, we were atrocious in ACC play for 2 consecutive seasons so ranking the defense and adding FAMU numbers etc is not really accurate in terms of our goals. BTW there was nothing special about our D in NO D first season, he want to crow about that but leave off the subsequent seasons.

I realize ranking plays into this, but can they get stops when it matters. Can they get off the field on 3rd down. Can we cover a fing crossing route?

Can we see if FSU has a punter?

If that keep playing that ill conceived, passive, and horribly schemed defensive system it's going to be more of the same.

I have to think they are going to shake it up....show a lot more 4-3...and maybe play more press man 2 under.

If they don't, both those a-holes should be fired by seasons end. They've been ultra slow to react or adjust their scheme...but after a long season of continued horrible results heading into their 4th full year here, it doesn't take Albert Einstein to see a change in schematics is needed.

I recall we were #100 on first downs/third down conversions. One or the other.

We could easily be top 10-15.

/in the ACC
//in the Coastal would probably more realistic though

I'll go ahead and set the bar really low. I would be pleasantly surprised if we end up top 50.

From D'Onofrio's Bio:

"In 2011, D'Onofrio's defense finished the season ranked ninth in the nation in red zone defense and 21st in scoring defense, holding opponents to an average of 20.08 points per game. The Canes' defense held foes to seven points below scoring average on the season, while holding Ohio State, Georgia Tech, Florida State and South Florida to a combined 22 points below scoring average. The defense, under D'Onofrio's guidance, finished strong and proved stingy, giving up an average of only 13.5 points in the last five games of the season."

And with suspensions to top. Most ppl forget this and his Temple defense.

When he has the horses, he does well. Question is, does he have the horses?

that 2011 defense still was very mediocre from a CANES expectation perspective. couldnt stop anybody when it counted, couldnt get off the field on 1st down, etc.

it was 34th in yards per game, and gave up 4.9 yards per play.

not bad but not very good.

that is about hte ceiling you can hope for with these retards

a) top 20

b) top 30

c) top 40

d) top 50

e) none of the above

With our talent we should be A. Due to scheme, we will most likely be somewhere between C/D. I don't care how bad play calling has been of late, you get depth and talent on the field and ***** bound to get better.

I'm hoping for no worse than 5.2 or 5.3 yards per play. That would be a reasonable improvement of a half yard per play and place somewhere between 40th and 50th nationally.

At that point there's a modest foundation and decent change to move into the upper quarter the following season. Keep in mind the best defenses allow low 4s per play and freakish defenses allow high 3s. That's how far away we are. Last year we were a yard and a half worse than Louisville yet somehow expected to compete with them in a bowl game. It was a terrible draw but at least was a necessary jolt.

Keep track of Florida State's performance in that category compared to ours and you'll see how much we lag, minus the fruity optimism.

Most of all, I just want to see some legitimacy at defensive tackle and for a couple of the edge guys to look special. In the World Cup after a player is red carded it's 11 on 10. That's what our defense has looked like too often in recent seasons.

At least there's been some comic relief when the skinny guys run out there on 3rd down, particularly as they turn around and run off as soon as it's 1st down again.

Eh I dunno about the stats but I think it's entirely possible to have a really good turnover differential which generally leads to a good season. The pass rushers are there, that will help a improved secondary and if the QB controls the ball then we should be okay. So I think the defensive rankings might not be to different, but the defense will force a lot more turnovers.

but F-A-G has said all off season that now is the time for continuity. what a ******* idiot

but DerpU tells me that yards per play doesnt matter. Dorito says yards dont matter just points.

fact is you are right. yards per play is one of if not the best measure of a defense and thus likely the team as a whole. we are a terrible defense and most of it is due to the coaches.

your comment about 11 on 10 is dead on. on reason it seems that way is because we usually run both our safeties out of the play completely right at the snap. they are **** near 40 yards off the LOS!!!!

I want to puke watching us play defense

It is going to be bad bc of the schedule - outside of our own division look who comes off the schedule and who comes on - with their national ranking on points scored
Off Wake 117th Nation in Scoring - On Louisville 26th ----- yes they lost their QB but Petrino will torch us
Off USF 123rd - on Cincy 48th
Off Gators 114th - On Nebraska 49th

This team could easily start the year 2-8 ------ Cincy took Louisville to OT last year !!!!!
