Strictly looking at the talent across the board on this defense, I say it should be top 30-40. I'll leave it at that.

Considering how pathetic the defense has been a defense ranked in the 40s would be a minor miracle.

It would have won us 11 games last season.

let's discuss what you mean by "realistic."

do you mean realistic as in expecting the unacceptable status quo that has been shown the past three years?

or do you mean realistic as in what the defense SHOULD look like given the talent/training/experience it has now?

I would be shocked if we are anywhere better than about 23 points per game which would put us about 30th nationally in scoring defense.

I'd say scoring we end up around 40-45th.

I think our DB's will be a significant upgrade over last year. Highsmith and Rodgers were FIU caliber players. Burns, Carter, Howard, and Gunter are a very solid group. Also love D Crawford and Bush--just hope DB can stay healthy.

LB is fine--sucked losing Figs, but overall no drop off--really like McCord and the pass rush he brings--could be scary if he's bigger/faster/stronger.

DL--Did we find some DT's? Only time will tell. We are much more athletic at DE…McCord, Muhammad, Thomas, Kamalu are all huge upgrades over Green/Chick in terms of athleticism and explosiveness. We shall see.

I think this team will be more aggressive, by design. Still think we will struggle stopping the run, thus our ceiling of around 40-45th.
