What if Ray Lewis iii had a different last name?

Made the mistake of going up to a Lake Mary Prep game this week to watch Ray Lewis iii play and see what we were getting. This team is a 2A Team that now has another running back/linebacker on the team. Jerimiah Sams doesnt have a famous last name but he is the Starting running back while Ray is next in line. Sams is faster and stronger than Ray yet he is only getting looks from MAC teams. Sams has even taken Rays spot on defense, Ray played a rover that accomplished nothing on D...Why is our coaching staff wasting a valuable scholarship when we have numerous holes to fill. I get his Dad rcoked the U, but he isnt his dad. Ray was able to pick up 125 yards at the end of the game Friday once they stopped giving the ball to Sams. Watching Sams run shows how slow Ray is and that his success has been based on him running against 8th and 9th graders on tiny 2A teams.

If Ray wanted to pay his kid's tuition so he could walk on, I'd be all in favor of having him. For a scholarship? No thanks.

Exactly...if its that important for him to be at the U then pay his way. Ray has a little brother that is a Freshman at Lake Mary Prep, he is even smaller than Ray...is he getting a scholly to?

It's threads like this one about RL3 that make me root for the kid to come to Miami and do big things even more...

I get it. RL3 isn't his pops. Not a lot of players are. If RL3 ends up being nothing more than a reserve DB and a special teamer, he's worth the scholarship to me. If he does anymore than that, it's a bonus. If anyone has done enough for Miami to put us on the map that his kid deserves a scholarship, it's Ray Lewis.

You know what, I'm fine with it. But if we're buying Ray Lewis's loyalty, then I hope we get our money's worth. I wanna see him showing up even if/when RL3 is riding the bench and I wanna see him around long after RL3 is gone. And while you're at it, put that mouth/speech making ability to good use and start leading the charge in some fund raising campaign or something. If we are ever going to get our own stadium, even if it's a long time from now, it won't happen until someone with some power and influence steps up and becomes vocal about it.

If the kid isnt that good, he should not be on a football scholarship. Those things are about to be more valuable than gold at UM.

He's the son of quite possibly the most legendary player to ever come out of Miami....and as such i have no problems with it. If anything, this might bring Ray around the program even more over the next 4-5 years, which can only help us.

Whats the big deal didnt we do the same thing with AJ Highsmith?
Its a way to have his Dad around the program (legally to NCAA) for 4 years. Seems like a win to me.

We're facing sanctions, depleted talent, and we're bringing in an extra small class, this is not the time to essentially waste a scholarship. RL3's ceiling is special teams player, you don't give out that scholarship in this situation no matter who his dad is. Did FSU give Deon's kid a scholly? **** no they didn't.

I understand your point, I just don't agree. Put the shoe on the other foot...if we hadn't offered RL3 and he would have been flirting with the idea of going somewhere else to play in college, there would be a large group of fans killing Golden for not giving RL3 a scholly. Damned if you do, damned if you don't.

It's not the same thing--but I had someone (another Canes fan) tell me the other day that we should have taken Ryan Aplin instead of Jacory Harris in the 2008 class. Aplin is playing really good football for Arkansas State right now, and looks like he could get some NFL scouts looking at him after this season. Aplin played his HS ball in Tampa at Fleming Island HS, was a 2* prospect, and didn't have very many other offers than Arkansas State. Now...do you think for a second, that there wouldn't have been a large constituency of fans who would have been ready to march on Coral Gables and absolutely tear the Hecht up by the foundation if Shannon would have been "smart" enough to take Aplin in the 2008 class over Jacory? The same Jacory who was a 4* QB, #7 pro-style QB, and just up the road at Miami Northwestern, reigning mythical HS national champs?

Recruiting is an in-exact science. RL3 may hit a growth spurt and become more apt to be a D1 player, or he might become a workout warrior who lifts enough weights to turn himself into more than a JAG with a famous last name. Then again--he might not. That's on the staff to decide if the gamble is worth the risk. Right now, they think it's worth the risk. Feel free to disagree w/them, but that doesn't mean the staff's gonna pull his offer.

I don't see how having Ray Lewis around the program more is more valuable than the value we'd gain by replacing RL3's scholarship with a better player. A good chunk of our fanbase is letting their emotions control their judgment and rationality.

Fans change their tune fast if the team is winning. Giving RL3 a scholarship reduces your team's chances of success. Maybe not dramatically, but by a little bit. And little things add up into big things.

I completely agree with you, I would have much rather taken Daryl Chesnut, he would've been a lock.

I don't think its a question that if we wanted a better DB prospect then RL3 we could get one. If we wanted a better RB prospect then RL3 we could get one. Peter said that he doesn't have a position and will be a few years before he will contribute, we can't afford that right now.

I'm not in favor of him getting an offer but I understand it.

Ray Lewis will be retiring soon and have a lot of time on his hands. You don't see how having one of the greatest NFL LBs around the program can be extremely valuable? Especially for a team who's LBs have not played well for many many years now? I understand that we need and want as many regular scholie players as possible, but there's no guarantee that scholie would be used on a starter anyways. Some guys don't pan out. But we still need core special teamers. Plus, maybe Golden could talk with Ray and say his son has a scholie for now but if UM gets hit with sanctions and scholies are lost then maybe Ray could step in and help out by paying his son's way. Doesn't hurt to ask.
