We're going to have to score 35+ to win this season

Against the good teams. I see our D struggling mightily...our offense is going to have to pick up the slack or we're going to be in for a long season.

We're 1-2 injuries away from having an awful defense. And it seems like a key guy or two goes down every year no matter what. We have basically no quality depth anywhere on D (except maybe DT):

DE - After Chick and Green we don't have anyone with experience besides Cain (who is injured and played LB last year). Scary thin here.
DT - Have the bodies, but nobody has stood out.
LB - Besides Perryman and maybe Buchanan, we don't have anything but bodies. Gaines and Paul have some experience but they looked awful last year. The rest haven't even seen the field.
CB - Gunter is going to be solid and Howard is going to be a stud, but he's still a true freshman. McGee is serviceable but not much more. Then we have Finnie and a lot of freshman. Crazy thin on experience here.
S - VT is serviceable and Rodgers has shown flashes, but no playmaker here right now. AJ doesn't have the athleticism needed and after him we have true freshmen. Very thin here as well.

Somebody explain to me why I'm wrong so I can feel better about the D this upcoming season...

And you can make the same post about that we have to shut teams down this year in order to win and rip into the offense. We are obviously a very weak Miami team, but at the same time how many teams do we play that have more talent than we do??

This is so much more than just winning games on paper.

Its going to be frustrating for sure, but we only need to win bu 1, and the O will be steadier than last year.

Luckily for us.........there arent any good teams on our schedule

ND - Ok
FSU - LULZ
VT - Almost beat them last year with our WOAT team

Other than that...who there is????

We gave up 35+ points 1 time last year (VT had 38). Our defense will be better then last years, if only because they have another year in the system. Team is also stronger and I believe more talented (although young).

Our schedule is difficult. While it may not be loaded with top 5-10 teams, there isn't many gimme games.

disagree. I think the defense will be better than last year. we do look bigger and stronger across the board. we will have to play smart and ball control football and hopefully get big plays out of the special teams because I believe the offense will struggle

Maybe I should have changed it to decent teams. ND, FSU, VT, K-State, UVA, UNC, NC-State...I think we need 35+ to beat every one of those teams.

If we can win 7-8 games with two of those wins against ND and FSU, I will be ecstatic

I'm not seeing it.

Our defense should be just as good, most likely better than last year. We lost one impact player in Spence, and Perryman seems primed to not miss a beat. Our scoring defense was actually pretty respectable last year.

We were tied for 17th in the nation in scoring D last year...you really think we're going to be better than that this year? I find it hard to believe we are sitting on a top 15 defense...

Our schedule is only difficult because we arent a very good team.

I mean, a good team laughs at us calling this schedule difficult.

I see your point but heck, we relied on Mike Williams, Gaines, Lee Chambers to make plays last year. JoJo might end up being a big loss (scary).

Hopefully Golden is being honest about Coach D being the best defensive coach he knows. If true, just having another year in the system should net us some gains.

2 things:

1) I just don't think our defense will be awful. We won't be like the past great Miami defenses, but I think judging this team off of last year's defensive performances is a mistake--mainly because the pass defense should be lightyears better, and even though we're thin at DE and LB (if you look at "proven names" only)...we have some talent at those spots that needs a chance to get on the field and shine. We won't know if some of these "unproven" guys are good or bad either one until they get on the field and see some reps. Part of the excitement to me for this season is seeing guys like Paul, Eddie Johnson, Hoilett, McCord, etc...all get the chance to get out there and show what they can do.

It's crazy--we all get excited about stars in recruiting and talk about guys like McCord and how they're "must gets", and then when they come on campus--some folks want to act like they're scrubs and get nervous because they're a young player who's going to get burn. WE RECRUIT THEM TO PLAY ON THE FIELD. If they earn a spot on the field--just sit back and let them prove whether they're good or not. Enjoy it--it's a part of the game. We can't automatically write them off b/c they have "Fr" beside their name in the program.

2) If you look at the multitude of weapons we're going to have offensively, there's not really any reason that we shouldn't post a high PPG this season. Morris seems solid, and he's got a young but dynamic WR corps to throw to. From what we've seen so far, Hurns/Scott/Dorsett deserve nothing but high expectations and should be playmakers on the outside. Plus, every RB out of the backfield can catch the football--which is a big weapon against any defense. Most importantly (to me), if we utilize the TE well in our offense, there shouldn't be many teams in the nation that get more production out of that spot than we should. Cleveland/Walford are a really good duo if they're in there together, and reports have shown that David Perry has shown flashes as a receiving TE so far.

We're young and inexperienced. However, so was Sammy Watkins last year--and he was one of the most dynamic players in the game PERIOD. It's not unheard of to think that since someone pops up on the scene as an impact freshman all over the country that we can't have a few of these guys do it. In a perfect world, you'd have nothing but Jr/Sr playmakers with Fr/So to mix in throughout...we don't have that luxury right now. We have to go with what we've got, and believe in it.

there are many other metrics that we were not good at (3rd down conversions, probably turnovers off the top of my head).

we have plenty of room to improve on defense from last year lmao. we are more talented at the LB and DB spots but younger.

the DBs last year were downright pathetic

We have a very mild schedule. Then again, FSU has it even easier and should drop 2-3.

I'm almost foaming at the mouth to see this team in action. That way, after the first couple of games the speculation can be put to rest and we'll know for certain what kind of team we can expect to see playing this year.

On paper you can massage it either way, we're either better or worse, going to win more or be lucky to win as much.

Personally, I think we're a stronger team. If you look at individual matchups we may lack in a few areas, but we're in year two with coaches who I think we can all agree motivate players to push it harder than in years past. It's not a game of 1-on-1 out there, they've got to play as a team. I think they're better prepared to do that now.

I'm not sure if we will have be that high in scoring Defense but that depends a lot on how many TOs our offense has, time of possession, and how aggressive D'Onfrio can call the games. I do think overall as a unit the defense will be noticeably better. I think we are more talented and deeper as a whole.

I'm not sure how you think we are going to give up 35+ to 7 teams.

our defense got better this off season. addition by subtraction. we lost a lot of players that were a cancer to the team and some that should have never seen the field for a miami team. the players improved their off-season conditioning and became stronger physically as well as mentally. last season a shannon or coker lead team would have packed it in 4 games into the season. I saw this team fight for the first time in a long time.

To think we will allow 30+ points a game is flat out ridiculous. Last season first year DC has us in almost every game. \

S= RRA gone(just proved his selfishness on and off the field) lets see Kacey get in and help bush along
DB's= improved - seriously mike williams is gone you cant be serious
LB= we lost spence correct but perryman is filling in. they need to learn to cover a TE is all
DE= okay we lost vernon.... lol we are thin but the young players will learn quickly
DT= lets hope what we have stays healthy this position has been a big hurt

I still don't see any reason the O has to score 35+ that is just ridiculous.

last season
BC 18.2
Duke 22.5
FSU 30.6
GT 34.3 we held them to a season low last year
MD 23.1
UNC 28.0
UVA 23.2
VT 27.9

NOT ONE TEAM AVERAGED 35+ points BUT WE HAVE TO SCORE 35+ Seriously we got that much worse yet all these teams improved that much.
