welcome to the u thread - Derrick Griffin

From texas247

I'm a moderator over here, so this isn't just speculation, and as for his actual grades nobody is going to have that, but his high school coach told us on the record that he has "zero chance" of qualifying to play at the next level. I'll be extremely surprised if Miami can get him in this year.
Like I said.

I'd like to see what is exactly on the record. What kind of high school coach puts a kid's grades issues out there to a site in that fashion?

The kid doesn't appear to think there is zero chance. Maybe its just youthful hope but he seems confident he can do it.

You can't. Schools can't advertise them and they need the student's permission to release them.

When I failed a chemistry test, the only one who knew about it was (1) Mom and Dad, (2) Mr. Schlieth (Chem Teacher) and (3) Mrs. Racanelli (Guidance Counselor). The school is not permitted to release them or speak of them without the student's permission.

The gym teacher may know because he is a coach and the kid may not be academically ineligible to play a sport, but he can't release this information to the public (recruiting site).

All those points you make are valid. That aside, I found it weird that a high school coach would actually say something that negative about one of his kids publicly. Thats why I wanted to see quotes or something.

He, like Griffin, is "uneducated" or he hates Griffin or this never happen and is BS. I like to say produce the quote.

TE all the way. He is 6´6/220 with a very broad frame and looks almost skinny. No way he doesn´t grow into a 250lb TE in the next few years.

He is nowhere near as explosive as Megatron, not even close.

Let's be honest - statistically, Megatron is the best receiver to ever play in the NFL (rule changes favoring the NFL passing game aside). I think, as it seems you do as well, that the comparisons to Megatron are a bit unfair.

Nonetheless, I am excited about this kid. I hope he can get on the field for us. DBC could have helped us with the eligibility issues on this one.

DannyBoyCane, we neeeeeeed yooooooouuuu! Why, oh, why did you have to go and hunt Kodiak Bears?! Why, oh, why didn't you listen to the swine flu warnings?!

He was always a qualifier. Please don't debate me on this.

They have confirmed he is eligible for the 2013 class? I'm not questioning you, I just dont want to read through 20 pages of people arguing weather he will be a TE or X/Y/Z receiver.

Keep Calm and 'Cane On.

Could we please stop operating under these absolutes. He doesn't have to be as explosive as Calvin Johnson. Is he as explosive as Mike Williams or Dwayne Jarrett? **** straight. Point being, he's a WR until he ain't fluid enough to play WR. He's gonna get time at TE anyway, so there's no point in going back and forth about this. Dude is more than fluid enough to play WR.

Just realized that my Megatron comment gives the impression that that would be why I don´t think he´ll play WR. Sorry, not what I meant at all, the two comments are completely independant of each other. In the second I was merely responding to the totally exagerrated hyperbole, and am fully aware that a kid doesn´t need to be as explosive as CJ to play WR.

My other, unrelated point in that post is that it is almost going to be impossible for Griffin not to outgrow the position and end up at TE.

You can't theoretically "outgrow" WR. If he grows and maintains his fluidity, I could care less what he weighs. Kellen Winslow could have DEFINITELY been an X here. There's nothing like those Plaxico Burress, Mike Williams, Keyshawn Johnson type receivers.

Keep him at wideout.................................

THIS!!!!!..I want our Patrick Turner/Mike Williams/Dwayne Jarrett

Im all about this too, unless the kid ends up at 230 or more. With that kind of size, going to be hard to keep him at 210 unless he has a skinny frame.

ESPN has him at 228lbs now. You can almost be positive he will keep growing.
I'd love to see him at 245 and keep his speed lining up wide.
I can't imagine any corner in the country wanting to cover that all day long, much less succeeding.

you have to figure he'll grow into a tight end. but he could be another kelvin benjamin; hopefully griffin has more than a 3" vertical, and does not have to push off 5'-9" corners in order to make a catch.

Coach Golden says Griffin still needs to take the SAT but fully expect him to be on the team come Fall 2013! Great news!! #CANESFAM

I figured we didn't sign this kid unless they thought there was a good chance.
Odds are great he's a tight end here. If he puts on 10-20 lbs, which is nothing, he's a te.

Somebody posted a while back that Coley would like to run something similar to Stanford with multiple TEs. This kid would be a great fit

Keep Calm and 'Cane On.

He's referring to Lamar Miller, not this new commit

I'm referring to to the person this thread is about. Based on the few posts up, he will be in the 2013 class.

Keep Calm and 'Cane On.

Coach Sumlin really dropped the ball, if all he needed was the SAT. From what we heard his grades improved immensly.
