UM should hire Wade Phillips as a defensive consultant to overhaul Al Goldens 3-4 scheme. Texas did something similar with bringing Greg Robinson as a consultant last year and their defense turned it around once they implemented his changes.

By all accounts Phillips will not work in the NFL next year so having him come in to coach UM coaches would work.

An AG is on record saying he wants to more aggressive in 2014, an Phillips run a very aggressive 3-4 style. Not to mention he can give UM's staff pointers in how to teach their scheme more effectively. Phillips woud be receptive because it keeps him coaching in a way and puts some money in his pocket.

If UM hires a defensive consultant to fix the defense, it will further prove that Al's buddy is in over his head. I don't think Al would want to step on his friend's toes. It might violate the Butt-Buddy rule book.

What we could do is hire more "assistants" to the staff in "non-coaching" positions. This is what Alabama and FSU does... I wish we could spend 10k to 20k on a consultant. Unfortunately, our budget won't allow it.

Texas paid Robinson $63k for the season as an analyst. Robinson commuted occasionally from Los Angeles for in-person visits. His role was to scout opponents, evaluate personnel and provide insight to Texas' coaches.

Phllips would be more instructional but could do something similar for $50k.

Also if it allows UM to improve its defense while keepng Goldens best friend employed he would do it. Not to mention the money should come from Donofrio's salary since he didn't earn all of it, based on last years performance.

Businesses bring in additional contracted intellectual capital all the time as consultants, as a matter of fact Goldens dad was a investment banker so Golden should be intimately acquainted with the benefits of hiring a consultant to overhaul an ineffective process.

I understand the idea. But if Golden, a perceived defensive mind, needs to hire a defensive consultant to fix the defense in his fourth year on the job, he needs to be gone.

Why if everything else in his operations execution is working well, you don't reinvent the wheel, you just get better tires and keep rolling. In this case it would be upgrading to a more aggressive tire and rubber compound more suited to hot MIA style we are accustomed to.

Wade Phillips smeared a **** drawing with his diaper at the age of 8 months that would be considered an upgrade here schematically

I think this is a great idea. It might help, and should not be too much face loss for Al. He certainly needs to show he is taking action and this is fairly painless way to do it. I would prefer Butch for both D and recruiting consulting but that is not happening, so Bum's little boy would be nice shot.

Al Golden is the smartest guy in the room and would never hire anyone to tell him how to run his team.

This would be a great idea, we don't need to have a guy like Phillips around all year. we need him to give the def coaches a crash course into how to run it more aggressively. That shouldn't take very long. Maybe a few weeks before spring pract starts.

We are talking about the Hurricanes, not the Dolphins. This program isn't going to pony up the cash it would take get Wade interested.

Most professionals, like doctors, lawyers, accountants, etc. are required to obtain "continuing education" to stay up with evolving trends. Even those who teach the classes must get it. So, why would a coach be adverse to going to a private clinic to learn something new that could help their career. Heck, isn't that just what UM is offering high school coaches at it's upcoming clinic? I say send coach D to a Wade Phillips weekend camp on the QT and have him select the Phone a Friend option at sign up!

If you're defensive-minded head coach has his team giving up 500 yards to teams like Virginia in the third year of his regime, he's the problem and bringing in a consultant isn't going to fix it.

Why would he want to?

$50k is nothing to him.

Phillips runs a one gap 34, which would fit our squad a lot better than a two gap scheme. While that is good to know, it means that I don't think him coming in would make sense for the staff.
