UF-Miami matchups

I will also say this about our oline.

i don't think they are as weak as some think. i mean they were 3rd in the sec in rushing with a passing game that averaged around 125 a game. so teams knew they were running and for the most part we still mauled people on the ground. also, if you guys spent a good time watching us, i'd say about 80% of our sacks was from driskel running around with his head cut off and taking dumb sacks. are they all world? no, but i think driskel made them look worse than they were. they put a whooping on some really good d-lines last year...namely a&m, lsu, and fsu.

I think that's likely true.

Do you think the fact that the Gators have a few new starters along the OL (a couple being transfers, I believe) will result in an adjustment period as they become accustomed to playing as a unit?

there will definitely be an adjustment, especially since most of those guys were out in the spring and didn't play together. i think by the end of the year the o-line will be improved, but i don't think that will show the second game. they basically have a fall camp to gel, i'm not betting on it. i know the d-line is the weak link of miami's defense but i still think we'll have our hands full. driskel is going to have to make plays in the passing game to win and well...let's just say i highly doubt it.

I also think the SEC is a TAD overrated with the Defensive stats...there are no powerhouse offenses in the SEC outside .. AM and UGA....

FL when they played NON SEC teams only 5..gave up more yards then when playing 8 sec teams FL avf 285 yards a game to the SEC in 8 games 295 to 5 ooc teams...that should tell you something...and the fact that the SEC is very very loaded on D and not so much on Offense...remove Manzel and the SEC wold not have a top 20 team in offensive stats...

maybe so. but if you look at the draft, sec players dominated the board, particularly on the defensive side of the ball which speaks to the level of talent on those defenses. but overall the point i was trying to make is that to go up against the level of talent we did defensively and to still have one of the best ground games in the league despite zero passing attack speaks to the fact that the o-line may not be the problem people make it out to be. driskel is just that bad.

SEC players dominate the board in the draft, but when they get to the NFL they seem to perform differently and not up to all their expectations

It's getting really tiring listening to our fans talk about UiF's inexperience. They have been recruiting like monsters so the perceived inexperience is still a **** of a lot better than most teams' veteran depth.

It's why I am glad its an early season game.

I wouldn't say UF has that big an advantage at LB:

Neiron Ball
Darrin Kitchens
Michael Taylor
Fowler (Buck)

Fowler and Perryman are probably comparable in terms of talent, but are those other guys that much better than Kirby, McCord, Gaines/Figatron?

DBs may also be a wash:

Riggs
Roberson
Maye
Watkins

vs

Bush
Jenkins
Howard
Gunter

i don't like our linebackers at all. they are decent depth guys but shouldn't be starting on a championship caliber team (not saying uf is). morrison is gonna be a beast (but he's not playing due to suspension) and fowler and powell at the buck and sam are legit, the rest are ok guys nothing more.

Miami's LB's > UiF's LB's

Their DB's are better than ours but I think it will be closer than some think. Our DB's were babies last year and really started putting together some good games.

If we're doing position by position and not matchups, I've got:All offensive units - MiamiAll defensive units - Florida

QB: Miami
RB: Miami. I understand that we don't have depth there but Duke>Jones.
WR Miami
OL: Miami

DL: UF
LB: Miami . Our LB's are more experienced.
DB: UF

Like someone said earlier, none of this really matters. Us being able to control both LOS is what's going to matter. Morris is going to have to focus on short throws and passing to Duke and Walford for us to have success through the air imo. The D just has to stop their running game and put pressure on Driskell. Easier said than done.

Good games were had against VT and USF in November.

Apocalyptic games were had against UVA and Duke.

They're still young and we're still depending on guys like 22 and 30.

I really like Bush, Howard, Gunter, Jenkins and Crawford but we're making the assumption that these guys have it all figured out already.

Like Golden said, just because they played last year and got exp does not mean they should have been out there...Guys coming in could fool a lot of folks..

I prefer to isolate a logical big picture theme instead of nitpicking minutiae. Florida has been weaned as a more rugged team. That should be the difference, unless the Canes capitalize on the scoreboard early while we own the energy and before we've suffered too many punches to the gut.

Otherwise, the flow of the game will steadily favor the Gators. They'll cave in our finesse plays more often than we dare expect. They'll get pressure on the punter and create a big play or two on special teams, simply by being more relentless. It will look quite a bit like Florida's second half methodical punishment of Texas A&M last year on the road.

Obviously I hope my scenario is dead wrong but as a handicapper for 25+ years I try to apply the situational scenario that fits. In this case, Florida has simply followed its blueprint for a longer period, stockpiling premium talent and forced to be physical in their league. Golden has done an admirable patchwork job but we can't ignore that most of it is frosting...skill position players and smaller guys. You don't give up as many points as we did last year without a weak chin. This is somewhat like Hearns vs. Hagler. We need to shock them early otherwise the trend is the other way.

Morris provides a chance. Maybe we'll produce big plays out of nowhere despite the flow of the game running against us.

I agree. If Miami wants to get back to where they were, they have to get tougher, especially up front on both sides of the ball.
