Travis Johnson decommits

Nothing against the kid, but we dont have room if sandland is coming. Bottom line. While we're at it cut Kerr loose too.

Kerr has too much versatility to cut loose. Kerr could reasonably turn into a DE/TE/OT. Versatility is crucial to a team with impending sanctions on the horizon. Unless you are recruiting a Blue Chip at the high school level, with pretty much a sure fire projection to the college level, you better have some versatility in your class.

True...

Plus, I remember people watching Kerr in camp and saying he has MUCH better hands than they thought.

Yup. I know Pete doesn't think Kerr can be an OT but a lot of people who have seen him quite a bit, do. He has excellent hands and he was very impressive with his OT technique at the UGA and UF camps. At this point who knows who ends up here but Kerr should be a good one no matter where he lands.

Johnson was unlike any tight ends on our roster. I wouldn't have even called him a tight end. A pass catcher, really. He never would've played on the line unless he was going to flex out or run the seam if we schemed him to break clean. He would have been a motion man. A guy you try and line up and find a mismatch. I think he could've given the offense a player we just don't have, but has value down the road. But at the same time, the niche would have been so small, that, as I said...I understand. In a small class, you only have so much room and the players you bring in need to project to contribute higher.

I still would've made room if he was coming, as this kid has been committed since the summer...but, not my call. I would have cut all but two of the current tight ends on our roster for Johnson.

That's why you develop... you speak as if he's reached his ceiling already

How can you say this when you said this earlier

" I'd rather him than Kerr (who could become an offensive lineman, but that's yet to be seen)."

Maybe they feel Kerr is more valuable to the team as he develops then Johnson would be?

Kerr is a valuable piece to this class, IMO. This team lacks legitimate blockers at the TE position, and this is an offense that needs 4-5 guys in the TE rotation. We're essentially going into next season with Walford and Dye. Walford the pass catcher, Dye the blocker. The other guys on the roster aren't good or won't be here (only White at the moment is gone). Kerr would essentially be our second best blocking TE the minute he steps on campus. Plus, he can catch a little better than many project. And, ****, he could move over and develop into an offensive tackle.

Can NEVER have too many TEs

The projected NINE from a month ago (Walford, Dye, Perry, Cleveland, White, Dobard, Johnson, Kerr, Sandland) was probably too many for the roster. White won't be here, Johnson was asked to move on (seemingly), and perhaps one more bites the dust would bring the roster down to a more healthy number.
