Time to Dial Back the Luke Nickel Love?

There is not one single data point, neither positively or negatively, that allows you to draw a hint of a conclusion about Nickel's future here. He should still be in High School.

When the lights come on and the bullets are live, how does he perform? I don't care one bit about practice reports until I get the answer to that question. Would it be better if the reports were "Holy **** this kid is a 6 foot Peyton Manning!" ?? Sure. But people were beating off mercilessly to Kyle Wright in practices. And the games started, and he crumbled. What is between your ears is just about as important as what is attached to your shoulder as a college QB.

Nickel will be fine. Or he won't. But saying he won't be a starter here after 1 practice in pads is dumb as ****, even for this fanbase/media.

And full disclosure if people think this is a slurper post, I'd say the exact same thing if the reports were that he might win the Heisman this year. Pump ALL the brakes. Let's see him make some presnap reads on 3rd and 7 in front of 65,000 people before we crown or dump him.
I think this is kind of the same point that I am trying to make. Many around here were ready to anoint him the backup before he even stepped on campus. And there were plenty of takes calling him the "QB of the Future".

I am not saying he stinks, I am just saying maybe we dial back the praise as it looks like Emory is clearly still the better option (as he should be).

OP is talking about David Lake's opinion from the most recent podcast on 247. He said he believes it will take "a couple of years" for Nickel to be ready.

He took a lot of heat for that on the board, btw.

"Emory is the clear back up" according to him. He does say that none of them have been real standouts or been consistent
If there's one thing I've learned on the interweb its take any opinion from David Lake with a grain of salt and then shove it right back up his *** where it came from (major pause)

Dude is a eye shadow wearing weirdo and is a fraud at his job for 247 Sports

I don't know if Lake will be right or not but I'll give him credit for not wearing orange and green glasses like 99% of people hosting podcasts.
As stated above lmao that's because he likes to show off the makeup he's wearing on his face... Bro is covering Miami Hurricanes football but puts on mascara for a podcast... fckin weirdo

Good lord, what a ridiculous and truly stupid post.

First, nobody anointed him the savior. Before we got Beck and with what we had on the roster, people felt that he was better than Emory and Judd. Which, of course, is not high praise. So stop it with this "savior" crap.

He's still a high school kid, at least on a normal calendar basis. If Emory and/or Judd leave, he will absolutely be the backup. QB of the future is an unknown, but you have to prepare for it.

Adjusting to the speed of the next level is normal. He has had exactly one practice in pads.

None of that is an excuse or a rationalization. But to make such idiotic predictions and projections after 8 practices, only 1 in pads, is just insane.
Go back and read my post again and see if there were predictions or projections. I simply asked if we should dial back the praise. He is clearly not better than Emory or Judd at the moment, that's fine, he has barely been on campus. But many on this board were definitely ready to name him the backup before he was even on campus.

Premature celebrations and anointing high school prospects before stepping on campus is where we thrive. This has to be a troll account.

Even if I disagree with someone’s opinion at least he formed his own. I respect that and he could be right

I get it. This is a hater take. But are we finally ready to admit that we all anointed Luke Nickel as the savior way too soon?

Sure, it is still super early in his first Spring Camp and sure, he is super young and there is plenty of time for him to improve. But most of this fanbase was ready to call him the definite backup and QB of the future before he even stepped foot on campus. Now that he has been on campus, reading between the lines, there has been a lot of "well let's see him with better receivers" and "I think he still needs to adjust to the speed" and "its still early".

Through The Smoke went as far as to say that they don't think Miami's future starter is on the roster currently.

Of course I want to see him succeed and become an All-American and call me a hater if you want, but while we are all sitting here pumping Dereon Coleman's tires, I think it is worth trying to have a little perspective about our expectations. We all moaned about how Nickel deserved a fourth star and it sure sounds like after seeing him in practice that he was probably ranked correctly.

Coleman is a completely different player so perhaps I am comparing apples to oranges, but for me, this only cements that we should be on the Portal QB train every season so long as the good options are available.
After seeing some of your replies on this thread, I think the main issue most are taking are with the descriptors and assumptions you included.

Example 1:
"...we all anointed Luke Nickel as the savior..." ALL implies everyone. Also, anointing as the savior is really, really high praise/expectations. Even though CiS has plenty of really dumb porters, not all are and I think MOST had a level of excited expectations attached to Luke. That's quite different than calling him a savior.

Example 2:
"we are all sitting here pumping Dereon Coleman's tires.....We all moaned about how Nickel deserved a fourth star." When you use absolute superlatives, like the word ALL, you are implying 100%. It invites criticism.

There is not much room for nuance in the way you wrote your message. While I think many on here did some of the things you mentioned, far from all did. I never anointed Luke anything. I am cautiously optimistic that in a year or two he will be a viable option to compete to start. I think the same of Coleman. I am also excited to see them both develop and hopefully succeed in our system. I think most of the folks on here feel like that, but I also recognize some guys might prefer one guy over the other (pause).

First of all, you are basing YOUR "dial back the praise" nonsense on the predictions and projections of dip****s like David Lake.

As for "dial back the praise", who really gives a ****? Has it impacted Nickel's development? Are some posters going to die from broken hearts because they issued too much praise?

Again, you haven't even addressed my point that the ONLY REASON anyone was "definitely ready to name Nickel the backup" was because our other choices were Emory and Judd. AGAIN, more of an indictment of Emory and Judd rather than an overpraise of Nickel.

Settle down and worry about things that are far more relevant and important. Like whether our new basketball GM can help get us back to Nike.
