This wasn’t an undefeated team

My only gripe with saying this isn’t an undefeated team is this: it should be. We managed to skate by at 9-0. You have 3 games left to win that any team with ward and a significant talent advantage should win. Sure in a vacuum it’s hard to be 12-0. But this is moving the goalposts. Yet another abysmal performance from this program which we have come to be accustomed to

The team's record is more accurate than it was yesterday. I wish we got away with it, but we didn't this time. You only have so many comebacks. My knee-jerk thoughts:

- The defense is the story for me. We gave up 271 yards rushing to a team with no QB and no RB. We lost time of possession 35 minutes to 25 minutes. We gave up 9 of 14 third downs. On a critical 3rd and 18, we couldn't win up front and left someone running wide open. It was a bad day.

Here's the frustrating part: Guidry had more cards to play than his opponent, and still lost. That's not just a talent issue. I thought the defense would start creeping towards average over the last four games, but we're going in the opposite direction.

- My biggest disappointment is the defensive end position. Before the season, we all knew our secondary would be a weakness. The hope was we'd kill just enough drives with our pass rush. That hasn't panned out consistently. Zero sacks today. Pass rush opportunities were limited, but part of the reason is that the edges were so soft that Georgia Tech controlled down and distance. We just don't perform like a team with two NFL DEs.

- Cam Ward is still the best player in the country. No serious person would compare him to Dillon Gabriel. But he was off today. Missed throws early and struggled with his pocket presence. He had checkdowns available for chunk plays that he consistently turned down. He's the least of my worries, but it wasn't his best day.

- The only bright light was OJ Frederique. That's what a playoff-caliber defensive back looks like. We don't have enough of them.

- If I could bring a recent player back, it might be Jaquan Johnson. We lack a tone-setter in the back seven. The guys that know how to play aren't twitchy, and the guys that are twitchy are either injured or green. Teams are going to continue to challenge our perimeter tackling, and I don't know if we have an answer.

- I didn't mind the decisions to go for it on fourth down. That's who we've been all year. The playcalls and execution are fair to question, but I like trusting the guys who got us here.

- Elijah Arroyo is a high-round NFL pick. Difference-making speed at his size.

- We didn't have a terrible day with penalties (3-35) but it could have been more if a couple targeting calls and a facemask went the other way. This has been a problem all year.

- It's a shame that Popo Aguirre got injured, because he was playing really good football in a LB group that is taking steps backwards. Teams are continuing to take advantage of Kiko Mauigoa in space.

- I'd like to see the All-22 to see how much separation our receivers were getting. We will continue to get challenged by teams with athletic corners.

- I hate that we have to worry about other ACC teams losing. We've been here before and it always ends poorly. But we are in a strong position compared to the past. Most tiebreaker scenarios favor us.

This team needs to get value out of the bye week and handle its business. The goal remains an ACC Championship. I'm less optimistic on the defense than ever, but the offense will give us a chance. Go Canes.

"Teams are continuing to take advantage of Kiko Mauigoa in space."

A more accurate statement is "we are continuing to allow teams to take advantage of Kiko Mauigoa jn space" IMO

I haven’t read through the thread, but talent alone doesn’t answer to being consistently lost in communication prior to the defensive snap and out-leveraged post-snap.

OCs have been one step ahead of our defense since USF. Accountability should start at the very top of who’s responsible for our players being prepared. If the excuse is that our players are empty-headed, then someone will have to explain how basic motion across a formation continues to leave us in the dust or initially chasing plays in the wrong direction.

Just nasty work.
Won't be addressed here. This is the fluff.

Every level of this defense is making catastrophic mistakes. You name it if can be fu.... up we're doing it; gap integrity, getting off blocks, tackling, coverage, sacking the qb, turnovers. This is a fireable offense.

it's a shame because UGA got smoked so we would have been 3rd
What’s bad is UGA plays GT in a few weeks. They will smoke them.
Georgia could easily be a 3 loss team and they would get in over a 2 loss Miami team (or even a 11-1 Miami that doesnt make the ACCCG) because UGA will beat GT who beat UM.

I was there live @DMoney . The defense was Putrid today

We've been favored in every game.. By double digits in most of them.

We should be undefeated. If we lost a game it should have been a game like @LOU or @UF... Not @GT against this one dimensional team who can't even throw the ball unless it's 3rd and long.

This was a bad loss and there's no rationalizing it now by looking back and saying things like "you all would have taken 9-1 at the beginning of the season" or "we were never supposed to be undefeated anyways".

Point is we WERE undefeated and were favored to win by 10+ today as well.

We underperformed..coaches AND players.

Exactly. Agreed.

This should have been an undefeated team.

Not because of how good the team is but because how bad the schedule is.
Going into the season, we were all saying 10 wins or bust with this schedule. I never thought we would go undefeated. Thought Louisville was a loss and possibly VT, Cal, or Syracuse. That was before the season started.

After the season began, it became clear right away the teams that were supposed to be our biggest challenges weren't all that good, outside of Louisville. I'm talking about UF, VT, FSU, GT. Now, our schedule went from easy to cakewalk. These teams are all mid to bad. It was very possible we could go undefeated after the Louisville game. No reason why we shouldn't. Now, we are hoping we can get by our last 2 crappy opponents to keep our playoff hopes alive.

I don't even know what you are talking about. You said I was smoking, I'm asking you, why are you so confident that we are going to beat a much better offensive team on the road when you can't play defense against a team that ran very basic stretch plays on you with a one armed QB? Top it off, Ga Tech's pass D is not good. You made this team, Cal, Duke, and VA Tech look like effing world beaters on offense. Miami is not skilled enough to take anyone lightly
Because I believe Miami's O will return to its mean of scoring 30+.

Baron is really undisciplined and Bain can’t hold all that weight. They have been tryna use him as a DE that can slide inside but he is not quick enough at 275lbs. You could say the same for Mesidor. They should be 6’2-6’3 255-260lbs max. Instead they fatten them up to fill in for the lack of difference makers at DT. This is a microscopic of the holes in the roster. I still like Bain and Meisdor I just think they r filling in a role that doesn’t maximize their skill set to help at a position that has a lack of depth. Bc rn our DL looks slow and unathletic.

We need to mix in some of our youth and speed at RB and particularly DE or OLB… when given chances, Malik Bryant, Pickett, etc have edge speed that Bain and Barron do not… let them hunt 10-12 snaps per game.

We forgot about Lyle, Allen and Johnson.. mix in some reverses and wheel routes with those track stars.

And finally why are you stunting the ends in obvious running downs? They exploited the edge so much and we were cutting inside leaving it wide open !

It is not on Guidry and Guidry alone.

Guidry reports to someone who could/should step in when he keeps seeing the same thing every single week. The problem is he can't help schematically, and it shows. So Guidry keeps doing the same thing hoping for a different outcome.....isn't that what some define as crazy?

So how is that on anyone other than Guidry. How is that on Mario. What would you have him do?
