How many all time greats do you see retire & go into coaching?

If you went down the rosters of our great players from '83 to '03, I'm pretty sure less than 10 are in college coaching.

Most go into business where they can add to their wealth. Lamar Thomas is the only one off the top my head that I can think of & he coaches because he needs money, not because he loves the game.

This makes the most sense. Why would someone worth tens of millions of dollars want to work 60+ hours a week in a job where you get criticized constantly and make a relatively small amount of money.

They can do just as much good by just being ambassadors for the school and helping convince kids when they can.

Not every player can coach. Not every great coach has played. I agree with you to some extent but it's not that way across the board. I do want guys that bleed orange and green but that doesn't mean they can improve our team and develop our players better. I do think some of the GREAT ones would do well at coaching. I think Ed Reed and Ray Lewis would be phenomenal coaches because they are GOATs (in the discussion), communicate well, and have passion for the game and the U. Dorsey IMO will make a great OC/QB coach some day.

You do realize that recruiting is only like 23.9% of the coaching profession, right?

College coaching is a grind like no other. It's a full-time job with ridiculous hours. On top of that, you STILL have to be able to develop talent.

Assuming that a guy can develop talent just because he was a good player couldn't be more off base.

You really think a bunch of guys who are chillin' in retirement right now are going to join UM's staff and fully devote themselves to the college coaching grind? You have nooooo idea what college coaching entails if you think it's just that easy.

I find it hard to believe Reed lobbied for a job and did not get one, and instead Rumph was hired.

I know the man personally it's been discussed. Funny thing you'd be surprised what happens behind tne scenes at this school.

Rumph put in work coaching high school football whereas Reed hasn't coached anywhere. I get the publicity aspect but Rumph earned it.

I went the the West coast of PR for 2 weeks last summer. Saw Old San Juan too. You guys have a lot of great heritage things over there.
