My goodness I am beyond excited right now. I started a new thread about this because we need to zoom out of the specific incident (Vernon Davis' transfer) and view what this means for the program.

I think Davis will be a good college player. I think he could have contributed here in a couple of years. If he felt so uncomfortable by what he saw of his peers that he had to leave to seek opportunity elsewhere, despite his personal talents, it means we have entered a "Survival of the Fittest" environment.

This may seem like something small, but in just over 18 months, we're seeing the first concrete sign of Golden's plan being executed. What we needed was a complete culture change. Players (like Willis Mcgahee) who cut their teeth against competition (like Portis) and were pushed to basically quit. If they made it through, they'd be tested as individual players and the entire program benefitted. We haven't had this culture since Butch Davis was here.

It's time to duplicate exactly this throughout other key positions. Miami is the place where players come to prove out that competition churns the very best of the best.

This is fantastic stuff.

The way it should be... And needs to be.

Still a ways to go though. It's going to take some time. And the young group, although very talented, needs to mature.

This is a competent group of coaches. Love Golden

The difference is crystal clear. During the last decade, we would have "settled" and simply hoped Vernon Davis could be relied upon to be one of our top corners. When a player (Davis) with over a full year of experience advantage is worried about an incoming HS guy, you're definitely pushing the evolution and quality of a position.

You think this is what #77 is considering as well. Missing so much time points this way.

I think he's looked for the easy way out from jump. In order to maximize, though, he's going to have to bust his *** for at least a few months here. Otherwise, he's going to lose a lot of money on that first contract.

I think we're extrapolating a lot from the mind of one 18 year old kid who took his ball and went home. Especially after his surreal comments about being upset we recruited Burns and Carter- that sort of disqualifies any rationality IMHO.

That said, I do agree with the premise. It certainly seems that AG is about competition and culture, and it it certainly harkens back to some of our glory days. That shouldn't be surprising, as AG is a student of UM history.

We went from having two scholarship CBs (McGee and Payne) to having talented freshmen who were making waves transferring because the going got tough.

**** just got real.

It's a single data point for a single position. However, what makes it such a big deal is that there hasn't been this kind of data point for a decade.

Plus, I really do think Vernon Davis is a very talented player. I had projected him as a potential surprise guy. So, to me, it means a little more because of that. I think he'll be a starter elsewhere.

Those who havent posted with LuCane the last few years probably don't realize how nice this is to read.

Lu gets it.

"Gunter says the freshmen DB's, namely Tracy Howard and Antonio Crawford, are pushing everyone else.

"They come out and go hard every day," he says. "So it's always a fear of losing your job or not missing a practice because the guy behind you might take your place."

Gunter indicated that Brandon McGee has come out "on fire" after losing his starting spot for a short period earlier in camp."

Yep... That's the mentality that has been missing for about 8-9 years now.
We're slowly getting this ship back on track..

I almost feel the need to apologize for the excitement. I've been truly pessimistic for so long that this caught me by surprise. It's like watching an empty screen for 10 years waiting for a radar alert and then...

BEEP!

A single beep. But, **** it. I'm gonna react to it.

Can't argue that its a nice little piece of micro data, and every little bit helps. But what if he's just a *****? Those Artie and Carter comments showed a complete detachment from reality. But I'm not sold on Davis anyway. Youtube clips, rankings, stars, fan analysis, blah, blah, blah. Tell me what happens on Greentree when they get to UM. And Davis was apparently behind all the other new kids. That's what matters... to me.

All that said, I'm happy to get these kids in to camp, NFL style, and have the last place kid get "cut" in favor of opening a 'ship.
