The OC Candidates Thread

Mike Ryan Ruiz in the latest Dan LeBatard Show about Gattis and Miami's new OC search:

- They pull the trigger on Gattis three weeks ago;
- Ponce went back to App State because Mario told him he wouldn’t be the choice at OC;
- The waiting was caused by the attempt to find a soft landing spot for everyone;
- There was a real struggle to connect between Gattis and the players, also no chemistry with the other coaches on staff;
- Last year Mario tried hard to get Tommy Reese, Liam Coen and Jason Candle before hiring Gattis;
- Jason Candle said no again this year before extending with Toledo;
- No change in offensive philosophy, power spread confirmed;
- No Kingsbury;
- Scott Frost is a candidate but he (Mike Ryan) seems to confirm some of the rumors out of Nebraska about is lifestyle;
- Mario loves the Rams offense;
- He (Mike Ryan) likes Arroyo, I didn't understand if he thinks or knows that Arroyo is a candidate;
- Gattis buyout was not an issue (2 million);

Nothing groundbreaking imho, many of those things are the same that we read on here from our insiders/connected posters.
I do not understand the interest in Rees. He’d be another underwhelming, boring hire. But I still think it’s going to be Arroyo when the dust settles.

The last two years Jeff Wilson put up great numbers, which also happened to be Seth Littrell’s first two years there

I really like Seth Littrell. Only thing that gives me hesitancy is that he’s never been an QB coach. Even as a OC he’s always been either a TE or RB coach. Doesn’t mean I wouldn’t want him but I think it presents potential challenges.

Only reason I noticed this was cause I wondering if he’s been discussed in any other coaching searches. Only potential link I found is him being discussed as a possible TE coach for the Vols.

Hire Arroyo as QB coach and Littrell as OC. Coley at WR coach or whoever Littrell wants. Frankly he needs to shoot his shot with Zac Kittley. That would electrify the fan base and QB and WR recruiting. However I don't think Mario gives a **** about that.

Between tidbits by national reporters, our insiders and now Mike Ryan today… it appears Mario has struck out on at least two options.

-Candle & Hartline (both who got raises and extensions to stay).

I know someone else mentioned Garrett Riley was approached as well, not enough smoke for me to confirm.

It's just too funny seeing everyone **** their pants at media personalities that clearly are throwing **** at the wall and hoping it sticks.

Victory parade will be almost as good as when Gattis was supposedly not going anywhere.

And the same porsters pi$$ing down their leg will be in the same threads saying "I told you so! Mario had a plan all along!"

I haven’t seen anyone outside of CIS mention hartline

He was always getting the OC job at ohio state , so it’s hard to believe we actually tried and missed on him.. where did you see that ?

I agree with both of you guys but did anyone see that video of peyton and eli manning recently that said in game adjustments were non existent and the biggest myth in football?

thought it was very interesting as they were adamant in either of there careers no half time adjustments were made even once. kind of a shock to hear as every commentator is always like "let's see what adjustments they can make"

now calling different plays without changing the scheme is one thing for sure and that comes down to playcalling ability and knowledge of systems and I guess it means that there may be adjustments happening that doesn't trickle down to the players but that interview changed the perception of adjustments that I and I feel like most people have

The one thing that stuck out from the Mike Ryan stuff was about Ponce.

Everyone and their mom knew he wasn’t getting the OC job this year or last year. He “left” to make room. Like @Cribby said, he was collateral damage.
Except he couldn't be more wrong about Ponce.

As soon as I read that, I knew he was full of ****.

Ponce wasn't coming back regardless. Another soft landing spot for his buddy to avoid a public axe.

I’m all for Zac Kittley and like I said I would really like Littrell as well. Not sure I could stomach Arroyo even as just the QB coach. Would prefer Littrell brings in his own QB coach

Well the Hartline thing came directly from Jeremiah Smirh during an interview. No need for him to make that up… also make sense giving the timeline and Hartline getting OC job at OSU.

As for Candle I believe in Mike Ryan. He had lots of good (and correct) info last offseason.

Hartline was never coming here as an OC. So which one is it - that Mario is married to a scheme, or that Hartline turned us down? You can't have it both ways.

He's starving for quality info. He's nowhere as accurate as last year. Imagine thinking about keeping Ponce as a QB coach but hiring a new OC. That's asinine lol. But believe what you want.

It is widely accepted that Mario has wanted Candle both times around. Candle doesn’t run power spread. Maybe Mario isn’t as tied to that style as all the reports may indicate

There we go. Some substance.

I don’t think it’s unreasonable to be frustrated with our OC situation. Gattis could have been relieved of his duties a long time ago. He could not or refused to take another job, and Mario was finally forced to fire him.

The decision to move on from Gattis was made months ago. I have to assume Mario has been looking around and made himself a short list during that time. Am I being impatient? Probably. Am I being unreasonable? Probably not.

We were remarkably terrible on offense last year. It was so toxic it affected the team as a whole. It affected and continues to affect our outside WR recruiting. Complete dumpster fire. I’m happy being impatient because I know it needs to change yesterday.
Mario gives a zero ***** about your or anyone’s feelings. The sooner you accept that, the better it’ll be for you when we are in this situation next year or the year afterwards.

Yeah, not only did he leave but he went back to Appalachian State. It was his second time in the P5 and it didn’t work out. He is what he is, and nothing wrong with that, but it’s clear that not only did it not work out at Miami but he just isn’t P5 material.
