First: anyone tweeting at or tearing down student athletes on any board with needless bull**** is a coward. Typical internet tough guy syndrome. Anyone who does that is wrong. These are kids.
With that said, the open season on what some(including myself) deem as a underperforming staff is a critical component in the long-term success of a storied program.
-Since 1980, we are one of a handful of the most storied programs in college football. 5 rings....5 rings...5.
-We live in the nation's foremost hotbed for recruiting talent. Yes, better than texas and socal.
-We are amongst a handful of programs that have steadily(the last few years withheld) turned student athletes into SUCCESSFUL pro players.
With those 3 points mentioned above, how can the following 3 be acceptable?:
-2004 9-2 team that got smoked by LSU by 37 in the peach bowl is the BEST CANE TEAM IN A DECADE.
-Kirby Freeman has led us to our only bowl win in the past DECADE. And we were a 6-6 team playing South Miami high School in said bowl game. Kirby Freeman....Kirby Freeman...Kirby Freeman.
-Brock Berlin has been the best QB since Dorsey.
10 years mired in mediocrity doesn't make you mad when you look at the previous 20? Really? I respect those of you who refuse to say anything negative about the program, and genuinely understand your reasoning.
But it is the "haters" and "whiners" in our fan and donor base that make anything less than winning a fireable offense. Coker and Shannon were fired because of poor performance AND the "negative" fan/donor VOICED their disappointments, remaining steadfast in upholding our program's SIGNIFICANT expectations. If we all stayed quiet and passed the peace pipe, Coker and Shannon would have lasted longer. Would anyone argue that our " negative" voices provide actual pressure that has tangible financial implications(vocal pressure/tickets/donations)?
This administration cares much more about academics and nurturing the future of student athletes. That is commendable, and we all want the kids to succeed. BUT in an administration that is less focused on upholding the traditions of our football program, the only way to get their attention is expressing our disappointment AND hurting ticket sales and donations as the only means they will respond too.
Golden is entering year 4, and there are some troubling signs we can all agree on. Is there something wrong with holding him to the expectations HE put forth and that our tradition demands? There is a saying that the ultimate form of patriotism is dissent. If that's the case, then those of us in the dissenting column are as faithful to the canes tradition as we can be. Go Canes.
