The Bank (5/19)

Someone mentioned OL talent across the country is down. May be why Mario is focusing on DL as there are quite a few really good ones and we need them.
Mario is focusing on DL because UM hasn't had a decent DL class in a long time and he knows very well that the path to the playoffs is paved with trench play on both sides of the ball.

Last year's OL class was elite but we still only took 2 guys who are kind of "unbeatable" for the next 3 years.
The elite OL want to stick at OT. That's where the high draft picks are.

And if they are truly elite, they have other P5 options along with the associated NIL opportunities. At UM, that would match them up with competing with the 2 "unbeatables".
We should attract elite interior OL this year. Kinsler and Tripp shouldn't scare anybody away (although I think they'll be good). And we should still attract quality OTs that can compete and provide depth.
By definition there aren't any. This year, as in most years, there aren't any elite (5* or high 4*) IOL. In high school, your best lineman will almost always be playing OT. No one has the luxury of having enough P5 OL recruits to line one up as a guard.

It come gown to evaluations. Find someone playing tackle, that's best suited to playing IOL on the next level and is amenable to the change.
Need 5 OL every year.
Agreed

You sound as if it's your money being spent.
Previous 5 stars scaring away more elite talent sounds like a premade excuse to me
As previously stated, Georgia and Texas must have the same excuse.
I agree with what u say
We have to show on the field
But then that’s what narrative should say
Just report that it’s gonna take more than selling hope this year to get top linema and we have to win on the field
It's been stated ... more than once. Please reread.

I mean, we just had an at least "decent DL class" between Bain, Wayne, Achaempong, and Horton. But I understand your point. We need more big uglies in the trenches if we're going to be a legitimate contender.

Lets just keep it a buck Kirby since he took over has recruited elite of the elite. UGA was dog water with a far better roster than what MC has, he took over upped the recruiting talent same like MC but at a higher level. We will get that in the coming years I believe.

I can’t believe we’re even debating the OL focus. It’s simple. 5 stars require some NIL to even be in the conversation. There are $X in NIL to invest. We put the biggest chunk of that into OL last year, we’re putting it into DL this year and counting on great evaluations among 3 and 4 stars to find the right OL

This is the same argument we have had on QBs. Do you use your budget on 5 star HS seniors at QB or get a couple 3 and 4 stars, and reallocate the budget to other spots, going portal if your evals miss?

And I trust Mario and Mirabal to evaluate OL better than anyone we’ve ever had except maybe Stoutland.

It seems like it's more about balance than anything else. We've been more successful at the edge than at tackle.

Yes many posters have said this and yes this is true, we have to win this year
But no where in the original post does it mention this
It strictly says that our last year haul at oline is spooking kids this year
So I just pointed out it looks like they are just seeing up the narrative to use as an excuse is we miss on top oline this year

Then that should be the reason
Just state that and not this excuse of previous studs scaring current recruits

Finally, someone gets it. That’s the point right there.

That's not the point of the original post. I read "the Bank" as bringing us up to date on current activity and what to expect going forward. It's not meant to analyze and critique the recruiting effort on a real time basis.

This. ****, look at Texas and atm - they have very average seasons yet are fielding really good classes, annually, and stockpiling kids at same positions. The “Samson and Francis are scaring off a lot of recruits” bit seems like an excuse that doesn’t have a lot of legs. Maybe some other teams are using it against us via a vis negative recruiting but as an overall excuse? Lame.

Shouldn’t stop us from landing some interior studs and one tackle stud. And it certainly shouldn’t result in us just signing diamonds in the rough types. Jmo

But if you know that is the case, why do you it need to be reported that way?

Gonna guess we have a good OL haul this year. Likely not two of the top five OLs like last year, but Mario will always get solid OL. That’s who he is.
