Talk lately has me a little nervous about 2020 football season. Thoughts?

Do you think we will play football in 2020?

I'm no scientist but from what I understand viruses are effective delivery methods for cures to other diseases. You can introduce a virus to attack cancer and other deadly things as long as the virus is less lethal than the thing you're trying to cure. Kinda like how we pump people full of dangerous radiation to kill cancer. That's what I believe was going on in that Wuhan lab. They were trying to find a cure for HIV (possibly) by modifying this bat virus. It got out.
Creating a scientific firestorm across the world, French virologist and medicine Nobel laureate Luc Montagnier has claimed that SARS-CoV-2, the virus that led to the global pandemic, is “man-made” as it’s the result of an attempt to manufacture a vaccine against the AIDS virus in a Chinese laboratory.

I heard he was an FSU grad, so there is that.

Saw this a week or two ago but when I saw he is also claiming DNA teleportation through electromagnetic waves, I had to discount his opinion

where did all our hystericals and chicken littles go?

I suspect a better chance at stadiums and what not in the Fall than feared. Not a guarantee, but I'm not placing a bet on emptiness.

Growing more hopeful by the hour that we can have some semblance of normalcy this Fall. Maybe not, but the momentum is gaining...

hey amherst, TOC, JH, et al...about that "death rate" and Italy's world class healthcare system...as was said before, you were uninformed then, you remain so today...

Question the Empirical One at your own risk of being exposed...

how many times must the lesson be taught??

By the way I'm flying in my invisible jet reading legal briefs on appropriations funding...

too easy...too easy...

It's gonna hit. It's going to be a question of how much impact it has. With the flu season simultaneously running, I can see a lot of people with the flu panicking thinking they're dying from the VID running to the ER. They should have every big mind in medicine working on a treatment/vaccine, as the financial impact of another run like this will destroy the country.

There will be no vaccine this year. Possibly not next. It just doesn’t work that way. But you can pray for a miracle, if you believe in that kind of thing.

Best bet is a treatment, and Remdesivir may not be the answer, or a total answer.

More solid data for Remdesivir, and for H + A, will be coming over for the next couple of months.

My guess: due to the current risk averse mentality, the best bet is empty stadium football, with a strong possibility of no football AT ALL.

As far as pushing it towards later in the fall or early next year, or even spring? We’re in spring right now. Doesnt bode too well for next spring.

Or we could play all our football in NYC. They will have herd immunity by the fall if they keep riding in subways and living like packed rats.

I also hope I’m 100% wrong. I just want football.

They're on the Florida Governor thread slurping off each other's fears...

OC3, your concerns are valid. Very valid. Some reporting a vaccine might never be practical due to corona virus makeup. Then again, same was said for Ebola and Marburg. Time will tell.

With that said, I suspect more like Kern County's medical director are going to come forward.

Question: will enough in enough time do so to open stadiums as half full? That is a legitimate risk. If they can't "get it right" by X date, well then "we can't start the season by y date". As they delay and push, eventually it becomes washed out.

My optimism is increasing slowly. I believe we will see a season, truncated perhaps, but a season there will be!

In Lashless we trust, until we don't.

Go Canes!!!

Where did I intimate I was praying for a miracle or that "I believe that kind of thing?" No need to be insolent with every response, friend. And you really have no idea when or if there will be a vaccine. All you have is an opinion like everyone else.

Hopefully, they'll come up with a good treatment, as there's also no proof yet that those who have caught it are immune from catching it again.

I don’t know where you get the “insolent” perception.

That wasn’t my state of mind when I was writing that, nor was it my intent.

As far as vaccines? I have a little bit of knowledge in what it takes to get a vaccine to market. From having an actual viable candidate, to mass production, would be sometime mid to late 2021, that is an absolutely breakneck pace with a ton of lucky breaks, and to my knowledge has never been done in such a short time frame.

My opinion is based on actual facts, and knowledge of the regulatory, scientific, and approval process.

For a fairly comprehensive review of where we stand, current candidates, and the likelihood of an actual vaccine being available in the near future, read the following:

https://www.nature.com/articles/d41573-020-00073-5

Best case scenario: early 2021 for emergency use (no mass production) and then hopefully widely available possibly as early as summer 2021 to the end of the year.

Keep in mind that would almost be miraculous result. With no snags along the way.

We have to be realistic here. As far as the football season is concerned, the vaccine is not going to be a factor. And that was my point.

So, yes, we need a miracle.

Of all of the dumb opinions about C19, the absolute dumbest is the idea that we are going to sit around like caged monkeys until a vaccine comes out or forever, whichever happens first. This is not Ebola, this is not SARS. This is a nasty virus that targets the old and immunocompromised at an alarming rate. The fatality rate for the younger (under 60) and healthy is like the flu. The fatality rate for children and babies is much lower than the flu.

Take precautions to protect the vulnerable and start opening the country.

All that said, CFB isn't happening this season. Basketball is doubtful too because by basketball season we'll be in the middle of "Corona Virus Part II: This Time It's Coming for Your Children."

And the hystericals and chicken littles are now stampeding each other as they run for the exits:

G Newsom (CA's Gov) briefed yesterday he will very likely open CA schools in May.

IF he follows through, good chance Fall school calendar goes forward as well.

Oh how just a few weeks and rapidly changing public opinion magically make this all safe now. The data says MILLIONS will die!!!!

But...but....but!!!!

Shame these people every chance you get. Every single one. Shame them with nothing but contempt for the damage they have wrought.
