Spring Game Observations...

I know the D was playing vanilla, but I gotta say- I was very impressed with Coley's Offense. Downfield throws, and when we ran, we ran smart- Duke gets the ball up the gut while holes are being built- kinda like gore in the NFL. Last year I feel like Fisch put Duke in spots where he got the ball late, and had a Defender or two in his face as he was receiving it....not all the time, but sometimes Fisch got a little to cute with the run plays for my liking. and I did not see any of that today.

1. Howard did what he could. Scott is our best WR and probably a future NFL guy. The play where Howard got beat by Scott for the TD was perfect coverage and a perfect throw. Howard tried to rake the ball out once Scott got his hands on it, which is all he can do is that situation. Scott is 3 inches taller and 20+ pounds heavier than him.

2. Morris looked goooooood boyyyyyy.

3. Minus a couple runs by Duke, I thought our run defense looked a little better.

4. I still hate our blitz schemes. Even when we send the house we don't get to the QB. Same **** we saw last year.

5. Our WR core is just foolish. Hurns and Dorsett weren't even playing today, which is even more crazy.

6. I didn't think the squads were split up fairly. The orange team's offensive line (if I remember correctly) was Flowers, Bunches, Wheeler, Isadora and Henderson. That's **** near our starting O-line. (about as good)

7. What a class act Golden is with the Malcolm play. Also thought it was cool what he did with Andre and Gino.

8. I think that overall our defense looks much improved. They don't look as lost as they did last season. Even when the offense makes a nice play our defensive players are atleast in position to contend it.

9. Finally...something I'm really concerned about...OUR PASS RUSH. It's non-existent. And I don't wanna hear some nonsense about how our O-line is great or whatever. We got zero pressure. Not even a sniff. The few times we did get pressure, I would look at who was playing O-line and it would be some 3rd string player or a walk-on. Alot of times our D-linemen look like they're playing pattycake and hand fighting out there instead of rushing "half-a-man" and creating vertical penetration. SMH

Because they were!! Half the OL is hurt. You really think they were gonna send the house after Morris and back up OL?

So you're saying that our D-linemen weren't trying to get a pass rush?

I think D. Crawford is going to make a significant contribution on offense this year, but I think he'd be a playmaker on Defense. I think it's a mistake to keep him on O, but then again I don't get paid millions to make those decisions

Based on what? He's quick but that doesn't mean he has the brain for defense. And who's he gonna play over?

Considering our depth at DB, and our lack of depth at RB, it's not a mistake at all.

Based on the same reason you think Tracy Howard is going to be a productive DB....He was pretty good at it in HS. Scout team defense MVP. I don't think they should have moved him in the first place. I feel like he would be competing for a starting job had he stayed in that spot.

With respect to RB depth, perhaps we should have recruited RBs the same way we've been recruiting DBs.

Well apparently he's not good at it in college cause he was moved.

That's not true. He might have been moved purely for depth purposes. A guy who is not good at defense in college would receive Defensive Scout Team MVP...in college?

I mean...

REALLY?

Fun game to watch, but at times it looked like we had a touch more intensity than the pro bowl.

A lot of the things that you say us do on offense were things that Coley pushed for last year (up tempo, moving the pocket, etc). Expect to see more screens though ( I think we only ran 1), he really likes the screen pass to control the rush.

I have a question is it better when spring games are low scoring or high scoring? Does Bama have these Offensive explosions in there spring game? I would like to know because thats how I want our D to look eventually when we recruit better Dline guys. (Or develope under the radar Dt's)

24-15 last year. Here's a link to the recap of last year's game.

http://espn.go.com/blog/sec/post/_/id/42002/recapping-alabamas-spring-game

Also take off a touchdown from each side (the Lewis td and AJ's td)

I don't think Shockey played in the spring game before the 2000 season, in fact, I'm quite crtain he did not.

Pretty sure you're right. In fact, we stole him late from some Oklahoma JUCO and the coach there was pretty bitter, thinking that Butch did something kind of shady. He complained about it publicly. I think it was just before fall practice started and we had already recruited a guy who was supposed to be the top JUCO TE in the country, a guy from Sacramento. That guy never did much of anything. I don't even remember his name. I remember that other guy was a good volleyball player, though.

Could it be because we were only playing vanilla on D? No stunts, blitzes, etc. Maybe if we mixed it up we would have had a lot more pressure.

* Spring games always promise more than they deliver. I can't imagine making a long trip for something like that

* Where were the rosters? Last year they were handing out rosters to everyone who entered. Today I saw one guy with one, and he had to print it before he arrived

* Golden's attire may have been appropriate for the weather forecast 2 hours before game time, but it stood out as ridiculous, given the conditions during the first half. Lots of wisecracks in the stands

* It's amazing how much spring games vary from year to year. Zero offense last year then today there were touchdowns galore in the first quarter. Obviously Morris was out there this time. The gimmick plays to Malcolm Lewis, and Torretta-Johnson, were well done and the highlights of the afternoon, but I thought they set a tone that was too soft and relaxed. The defense was lounging out there, for the most part. Last time I remember a spring game like that was the year we played at Ohio State. I knew we wouldn't be prepared to match their intensity and physicality. At least this year we host Florida instead of a road game, but those teams aren't goofing around. I attended one Virginia Tech fall scrimmage at Lane Stadium a few years ago and was astonished at how physical it was, unlike anything I've ever seen from the Canes.

* I was too low on Morris the other day, when I estimated 4th to 5th round. Today was a reminder of sheer ability. I'll bump it to 3rd/4th and that might be too low. Fantastic raw arm.

* It was funny that the defense just stood around on the play prior to Lewis' touchdown, and you could sense something was going on. Morris apparently threw it to the wrong guy, then they invented an excuse to bring it back and allow Morris to try again, finding the proper target in Lewis

* Our linemen and linebackers are noticeably larger than recent seasons. I thought they were sluggish as a group. Not necessarily the ideal weight for each person, but simply larger. Chickillo really stood out as bigger and stronger. We'll see how it translates

* I don't understand the praise for Scott. He took the wrong angle more than once and badly mistimed his jump another time. Not the most instinctive player. The guy next to me was ripping him all day

* Carter is a great looking athlete. He seems to have hit and miss inevitability, like Dorsett

* Every time our kicker #46 was out there I could hear the "I Love Lucy" theme song, and Desi saying, "Little Ricky." That guy barely budges 5 feet tall

* I appreciated that Golden arranged a couple of long field goal attempts. In fact, he took more interest in one 48 yard attempt than any play all day, making sure everybody was positioned to his specifications

* Williams looked moderately improved in the first half. Then all the weaknesses popped up during the second half

* First impression of the Coley offense is positive. Lots of seam routes and slants, attacking plays. Back shoulder has obviously been a priority and we executed them surprisingly well. Some nice basic run formations also

* Herb Waters jumped out at me, before he was injured. Loads of athletic arrogance and instincts within tight quarters. I could tell he hurt his right elbow or shoulder immediately when he went down, while blocking on that long run by Duke. Others in the stands were startled to see his right arm in a sling, when presented with one of the spring awards at halftime

* I agree with others...first glance at Sandland wasn't encouraging. I wasn't looking for polish. I hoped for more athletic ability than he displayed

* Defense didn't try hard enough for me to evaluate with confidence

* It was hilarious when they played a public relations video of the stadium renovations, urging a Vote Yes. That might play well when you are elsewhere, without immediate reference points. But trudging through that drab aging facility and then witnessing a severely airbrushed version on a big screen was too much for my group to take. The guy behind me couldn't stop laughing. The two of us had just talked about the proposal, that the roof is going to be an awkward slap on. He said the same thing I've emphasized, that it makes no sense to waste hundreds of millions on a contrived fix instead of starting over on a new venue in the parking lot. That stadium looks terrible everywhere when you walk through it, and compare to recent NFL stadiums.

Shouldn't have to rely on trickery or blitzes to get pressure all the time. Our guys gotta be able to win battles.

Wow so you can tell from a glorified scrimmage if we are physical enough. The spring game really is just for the fans to put on a show.

Taking it a lil to serious buddy!

My observation is...

Have we ever been able to take away something new from a Spring Game that carried over to the season? Its like watching the Pro Bowl and expecting to take away something from it. Its just a game for the fans. Go out there, have fun, and don't worry about evaluating what you're seeing.

If some of these guys had been to the spring games during the dynasty years (2000-2003) they would have had heart attacks! Lol. Especially the one in 2001 when Mcgahee ran for like 200 yards on that defense! Lol. People were **** near ready to fold the season saying our run defense was the worst ever! Lmao! It's a spring game! **** I left in the 4th quarter! It was fun and we got to see the kids one last time before the season starts. That's it. Don't look too much into it.
