Now that major media outlets have covered it and it appeared in The U part 2 it's "well the media didn't say anything positive about the banner so it didn't work"

Nice BS...no one said that no one would see them or care. What was said is that they will have no positive effect, and won't do anything to help the program. Since the beginning people were pointing out exactly what happened....it made the fan base look like a bunch of idiots, and it made a lot of recruits question whether the atmosphere is worth coming in to. Even Walton, who thankfully eventually signed anyway, made a very clear comment that the fan behavior was bad and impacted his views.
