Southridge/Deerfield Beach thoughts

Did Diaz talk to Grace that you saw? Wondered what the temperature is between him and the staff.

Yeah, I think they took a selfie. Things seemed good. The coaches wanted him to stay but it was out of their control.

Grace has really bulked up.

He does, but Carter still looks bigger (and maybe this is why he'll change positions in the NFL).
Barboni what were your thoughts on the game?

I went to the game with a few friends (one coaches at FIU).

Other than 3rd and long, Southridge played heavy cover 1/3 with a Davis as the single high safety. Deerfield's Oline isn't anything special. At times they protected with 5 lineman and 2 backs, and a 4-5 man rush would still get there. I have slightly different opinion on Jerry Jeudy. If I were to make a comparison, I'd say that he reminds me of Ocho Cinco, but not as fast. Tall, with quick feet and very fluid/smooth change of direction. He separated easily on underneath routes. Collier, got beat on 2-3 slants that went for around 10 yards. In the slot, he was abusing #5 , but the qb couldn't get him the ball (Deerfields QB missed plenty of open WRs). I was impressed with footwork on the play where he shook Collier after the catch, but not with his burst after the hard cut. I don't see elite acceleration like Ridley, Coley, Cook, etc...Nor, do I see elite deep speed. When deerfield did have time to throw, he had trouble separating against Collier on deep routes. They didn't cheat Davis to his side. With DFBs max protection calls, I was surprised that they didn't attempt a 1v1 outside release vertical with Juedy (especially, when he was being pressed by Collier). This also showed on both of his KRs, especially the 2nd where he spent too much time going lateral and got tackled behind the 20. Maybe I was expecting too much or he might of been injured, but that comes with the hype . Hope he comes to Miami, but fans might end up disappointed if they're expecting a prospect that's a threat on every single route on the level of Coley or Ridley.

I think it's telling that on a team loaded with D1 DBs, they chose Davis to be their single high safety. He'd be a nice pick, as we need safeties with range.

Billy Gibson has a big frame for a hs safety. Hard to project what he could do as a safety with him being lined up as a ILB, but hopefully he has decent range.

SFL is going to be loaded in 2018 with quality DEs, and I'm hoping we take advantage. Stack chips!!!

Can't comment on some of the points/criticism, but what stood out to me the most when I say Jeudy's highlights, is that he would make an outstanding slot guy or maybe corner.

Everything but 4.3 speed. Kid is a 4.5-4.6 guy but appears to catch everything thrown his way. Good hands, great at catching it at the high point, great quicks...

I'm not sure JJ is a 5* outside of his camp hype and Bama commitment. Lots of Bama kids get bumped simply because they are Bama commits. Donaldson is a 5* if he is committed to Bama for example. JJ is a good WR but he isn't the next Randy Moss, Andre Johnson... He may be more of a Reggie Wayne if you are looking for a comparison. It will all come down to how hard he is willing to work on fine tuning his craft.

It would be great to land Davis. I'd rather land Davis at CB than Henderson. Collier isn't a bad Plan B for Edwards as he clearly can play CB and S with his size/speed combo.

Southridge won 26-7 to advance to their first state title game since 1999. The defense pitched another shutout, with Deerfield's only points coming off a fumble return. They are as good as Flanagan last year and one of the best defenses in recent history. They have FBS guys at every position. Some overall thoughts:

- Mark Pope took a kick return to the house and made it look smooth. Very similar acceleration to Stacy Coley.

- It will hurt to lose Shawn Davis to the Gators. He played single-high safety all night and returned a pick 99 yards. Looks the part and has excellent ball skills.

- Jerry Jeudy is the truth, but Deerfield's passing game got eaten up by Southridge's front four. All four guys are impressive but the standout to me is Randy Charlton (2018). He is a passionate player with athletic ability and room to grow. He looks like a prototype Alabama backer. Tonight, he made the key interception and a half-dozen TFLs. Probably a DE in our system, but he has enough size and looks like he's still growing.

-James Head (2018) is a taller version of Charlton. Both guys will be heavily recruited. I'm a DeAndre Johnson (2017) fan. He lived in the backfield and rocked Nick Holm on several occasions. I would like us to keep Johnson on the radar at DT. He's bigger and better than Tyreic Martin and we need depth.

- Antwan Collier took over the game as a QB in the second half. He scored two TDs and showcased impressive acceleration and long speed. He also finished his runs with power. He played CB all night, mostly against Jeudy, but I could see his physical nature and size fitting in at safety. He didn't seem polished on an island. Billy Gibson played in the box and made a couple nice tackles. The DL and MIKE were swarming before Deerfield even crossed the line of scrimmage so Gibson didn't get a ton of action.

- On the rare occasion Deerfield Beach got a pass off, Leroy Henley was there to make a tough grab. Still think he's underrated as a Power 5 talent. Kemore Gamble didn't make any catches that I saw but he booted the ball in the end zone like Lou Groza. I'm a Gamble fan, he's a well-rounded athlete in the mold of Michael Irvin II. Daquris Wiggins probably needs to transfer. He looks the part but Southridge can't throw.

Saw Diaz, Dugans, Banda, Stacy Coley, Jermaine Grace and Jamal Carter in attendance, along with Larry Scott.
Interesting thread in retrospect. Some updates on the players mentioned:

- Mark Pope is starting for Miami but has not met projections out of high school. I still like his work on kick returns and believe he should focus on that area instead of punts (less thinking).

- Shawn Davis is starting safety for UF and an NFL player.

- Jerry Jeudy won the Biletnikoff and was a first round pick for the Broncos.

- Randy Charlton starts for UCF and is their best DL. Excellent player.

- DeAndre Johnson just won SEC Defensive Lineman of the Week with 2.5 sacks for Tennessee. Bright future at DE.

- James Head started all 13 games for Indiana as a sophomore. Has yet to explode as pass rusher (2.5 sacks last year).

- Antwan Collier starts at safety for UCF and is coming off a big '19 (74 tackles and 4 INT). NFL hopeful.

- Billy Gibson signed with Oregon but transferred after 7 tackles in two years. Now at Garden City CC.

- Leroy Henley suffered a serious knee injury, started a couple games for East Carolina and is now at Richmond.

- Kemore Gamble signed with Florida and made a few catches before being buried by NFL prospect Kyle Pitts. It appears he has been passed by Keon Zipperer.
