Someone Who Knows Things

Since you mentioned OSU, Ryan Day ain’t elite either. A lot of that fanbased wanted him fired.
Interesting metric for elite.

Winning almost every game every year and consistently making the playoffs and national championship game while pulling in the best recruiting classes year after year.

If that's not elite I don't know what is.

2025 is really a one game season.

Notre Dame.

Which QB when placed on our roster beats Notre Dame?

If this is not the only question Mario and Shannon Dawson ask themselves during that 1pm "QB Discussion" meeting appointment on Microsoft Teams over cafecitos, it should be the first.

It's no one currently on the roster. This is obvious.

The list of QBs is quite short. Nevermind the available QBs to complete such a task. That's a small list.

Mateer is on that list.

If Cristobal and Dawson tell me they don't think Mendoza can do that...ok. I'm sold. Good rationale. Probably cant.

Now go find better.

Some of these early names ain't it either. Although, I can see why a name like Maiava popped up. Somebody probably watched the Notre Dame game.

Because that game is our strength of schedule. They are also the best team we'll play all year from a ranking perspective (preseason Top 5 for sure).

The reason Miami doesn't get in, isn't just the losses...but we had no respected wins. Committee put Bama, that had good wins over us. Those games really matter. More than the losses.

So we gotta ******* beat them.

Who does that?

Are you sure about that? Who is their quarterback? Did you learn nothing from this year?

2025 is a 9 game season. Win the ACC and make the CFP!

Now if we want to do anything meaningful, we should be 3 of 4 out of conference.

This is assuming we will have a playoff worthy resume? Because Mario is 3-8 in the month of November and 1-5 vs ranked teams. What we do in September won’t carry us if we lose to ACC middle tier teams. I think we are going to have to death struggle to be .500 in the conference with our current QB situation. I think 3 to 4 conference losses is quite possible despite what happened before Halloween

If we don’t upgrade our QB, it’s hard to imagine much success. Anything from 4-8 wins is possible.

That needs to be our most urgent priority, and that’s been true since before Emory stunk up the bowl. Cam gave us elite talent and elite IQ. Mendoza wouldn’t have at least replaced the IQ part, but he’s off the board. Need to find someone with veteran experience and some proven production.
Passing on Mendoza was just not smart at all

Yeah a lot. A team like Texas gets in with gusto, despite not being able to beat Georgia because they beat a team like Michigan (#10 when they played them...finished 8-5). Notre Dame is in with gusto despite a loss to Northern Illinois in part because they beat 20 rated Texas A&M to start the year (rest of their ranked wins are Army, Navy, Louisville).

There are examples of catching highly ranked teams early in-conference for teams in the B1G/SEC, but doesn't really apply to us since we're in the ACC. Catching eventual 6-6 Oklahoma early when they are ranked #18 is a good bit of luck and matters unfortunately...or being able to ride what looks like a really evenly matched win over really flawed but then 2 ranked Georgia to being considered a better team than Miami, covering up losses to OU and Vandy. Those things matter, but are luck of the draw we don't get any benefit from. But the former matters quite a bit. First impressions matter, etc.

This is one of the rare times I don’t agree with you. The staff thought very highly of Emory. If they didn’t, we would already have a QB in place, and Emory would likely be in the portal by now.
Didn't look like Dawson thought highly of him when he called 9 runs in 10 plays on Emory's first drive against a team we had thrown for nearly 200 yards and 3 TDs against in the first half.

Our QB will determine whether or not we are a playoff team. We were a playoff team this year. We deserved to be in, failed by our lack of wins with a sprinkle of bull****. The losses mattered far less than no ranked wins.

If you don't have a quarterback that can beat Notre Dame, then you don't have a quarterback that can get us to the playoff. Even if Notre Dame stinks next year, we'd beat them when they were ranked in the Top 5.

We're not nickel and diming our way to an ACC Title to undo the loss to Notre Dame early in the year. A loss to Notre Dame early has us maybe eating Pop Tarts right after Christmas again as our ceiling.

Yet, Emory is still on the team and we passed on many QB’s so you tell me..

Exactly we need a proven college QB. Too many ifs with the current QB room. If you roll with nickel what do you do if he stinks? What does it say about QB evaluation? Best case scenario you get a guy that is good. Good to me is a guy capable of throwing for 20 to 25 td. If we get a guy like that maybe we run the ball a bit more. Then you see how luke looks in the spring summer and during the season if he is good he should compete for qb1 next year if not transfer QB again

I have no problem throwing Nickel out against ND if we get another QB to challenge him in the Spring so he is always on his A game. Emory may be the perfect analyst to help him with the offense but need another QB to push him to his full potential.

Nickel is a gamer. He's battle tested and overachieved compared to past QB's we recruited. Look at the records of each of them none of them were winners and played top notch talent week in and out like Nickel. The last ones we had was who... Marve? Jacory? ****... Brock Berlin? Stephen Morris and Kaaya weren't bad wish we had either or for next year. Nickel is different though turn on the tape and look he's not playing cupcakes either. Top notch talent something Judd and Evan didnt fare so well against when tested.

Nickel will get us 9 wins at the least. He'll I'd say we beat ND if he has a good spring. He's a film junkie and general like cam pushing his guys to study and get mental and field reps together daily preparing for the opposition or cheer from the sideline on somebody else team. He's tough as nails played majority of the season with a bummed ankle. I'd say he's more athletic (faster straight line for sure) than cam and willing to deliver the blow (6'3 220).. anybody can get Nickel rocked 🤪🤣🤣

My only concern for right now is spring camp winning the team over and getting everyone to buy in believe and protect him at all cost. If they do I believe we'll acquire more talent on defense and sprinkle in more weapons (if need be at receiver Brock Schott gonna be his bauber at TE). If he can't win the team over we'll suffer come spring portal that's my main concern. With his demeanor though I believe we'll be fine.1 He has the tools to be something special. What he's done in that division the past three years should have everyone excited ..10-4(lost state semi-final) 13-2 15-0... 2x champ 2x mvp max prep 1st team all american 2x 1st team all state this year Mr Georgia etc..

mediocrity is not an option for Cool Han Luke! Hit a homerun with the DC stock the room with a few more LB's DE's and Safeties. And let him Luke cook as long as we have a solid stingy defense and protect the ball we can beat ND. Turnovers was the difference against UGA and the sideline penalty on the 61 yd catch killed momentum.

Mendoza was an easy layup you know what your getting smart player who will get the ball to the playmakers… 10 win potential with a floor of 8 if the defense is just as awful as this year because he’s no cam ward.

Marios been known to pull late portal heroics like cam and barrow so I’ll reserve judgment till the spring game. Either way Emory ain’t it and if we’re relying on him week 1 and eventually true freshman nickels by years end it will be a long miserable year
