Someone Who Knows Things

2025 is really a one game season.

Notre Dame.

Which QB when placed on our roster beats Notre Dame?

If this is not the only question Mario and Shannon Dawson ask themselves during that 1pm "QB Discussion" meeting appointment on Microsoft Teams over cafecitos, it should be the first.

It's no one currently on the roster. This is obvious.

The list of QBs is quite short. Nevermind the available QBs to complete such a task. That's a small list.

Mateer is on that list.

If Cristobal and Dawson tell me they don't think Mendoza can do that...ok. I'm sold. Good rationale. Probably cant.

Now go find better.

Some of these early names ain't it either. Although, I can see why a name like Maiava popped up. Somebody probably watched the Notre Dame game.
There is a better argument for ND being the least important game of the season than there is for it being the most important of the season...

Lose that game badly and you’ll see if it is important or not.
Lose UF badly or FSU badly or the first ACC game badly, etc lol. Same ****. Losing badly is bad no matter who it is too. But factually a ND loss has the lowest negative impact, especially since we are almost certainly not entering that game favored, whereas we may be favored in most games at least preseason.

I am surprised we aren’t upgrading on the DL and LB rooms more. The lack of talent on that side of ball is clear as day so It’s just insane work we are only prioritizing the secondary. Come spring, the staff is going to panic and make more moves but by then it’ll be too late. This staff can’t get out of its own way. 25’ going to be a difficult season.

Get the right dc and talent concerns will be alleviated just like when we went from No D to Diaz.

I still remember how much we griped about a lack of talent on defense before Diaz got here his first few years.

Get those guys on the same page and we will make a big jump as is. Add a few more key players and we can actually be pretty good.

Lot of talented running backs we will face next year, the last thing I want to see is getting gashed in the running game next year

Who’s setting the edges next year?

Passing on Mendoza was just not smart at all
Feel like a lot of fans are playing monday morning qb with mendoza now that we are standing here ****ing into the wind. 4weeks ago only a few were chirping for mendoza. Everyone else wanted the flashier more dynamic option. Now all of a sudden mario is a fool and mendoza was the answer.

It’s year 4 and we are about to hire our 3rd DC. What are we talking about?

Also, would have liked to have grabbed a talented space-eater on the DL out of the portal. I really wanted that Silver kid from Kentucky.

Cam wasn't a one-man show, but pretty much everyone who isn't a delusional homer expects us to have a worse Offense & lose more games, despite returning what some say is an Elite OL & arguably the best RB room in the ACC, along with Four 4-star HS WR's returning & a productive portal add...

Not a one man show, but we literally would be a sub .500 team with Emory & would be shocked to win 7 or 8 with Nickel.

And are also desperately scouring the Portal for QB's.

Lol

This rush to try to diminish Cam at every turn is classic CIS.

The way this board beats up its great players while simultaneously throwing parades for every UDFA & 6th/7th rounder practice squad player is always astonishing.
You forgot one:

- Cam was the de facto Offensive Coordinator. We are going to find out how good Dawson really is this year. I think he’s decent but I am curious to see how this plays out this year in terms of how he schemes things up as I don’t believe from what we saw in 2023 that he’s great at scheming up things. This leads to D$ quote below:

Cam is the best QB in the country. We can’t place him on a higher pedestal than #1. He’s going to be a first round pick based on his individual talent.

He also had help. That’s why he came to Miami. He said it himself.

Some of that help comes back, some needs to be replaced. Is it enough surrounding talent to elevate a middling QB? No. But it can help a good QB get better. Everybody expects our offense to get worse without the best QB in America. The hope is we can still be a Top 25 unit.

I don’t understand why any of that is controversial. Now we need to get a good QB, because we don’t have one right now.
“Everybody expects our offense to get worse without the best QB in America. The hope is we can still be a Top 25 unit.”

If that happens I would be shocked. I think we will be lucky to have a top 50 Offense, let alone Top 25 at this current point with a True Freshman QB.

Even with a transfer, you don’t have Martinez, you don’t have those WRs or TE we just had in 2024.

To be hoping in year 4 of a coaching tenure…..

That’s what’s funny to me- I’ve been saying the same thing the whole time. It’s not a knee jerk reaction to Iowa State. We won’t be very good if we run a ball-control offense with Emory.

Nobody is denigrating Cam. It’s a fake argument. Everybody thinks he’s the best thing to happen to us in two decades. He elevated us to relevance.

I just think calling him a “one-man show” on offense is: (1) wrong; and (2) insulting to the other good players on this #1-ranked offense.

I’m glad @BoxingRobes brought up the 2023 team. To me, that’s the most realistic starting point- how much better can we be than that team? That team was better by the stats than the record (SP+ 28th overall), but sputtered because of incomprehensible decision-making at head coach and QB.

Where can we improve on that team? Is that enough to get us in the ACC mix? The margins are pretty close both directions.
This screams at best 7-5 regular season with a bowl game to decide if we make it to 8 wins.

So this was all fun to argue but it’s 2am at the bar and even the tortas are leaving.

Is there a legitimate plan to land a QB or not? Because all this arguing is mute. If we don’t land one, you’re essentially punting on 2025 being a ceiling of 8-4…more likely 6-6 or worse.

8-4 would involve the defense doing a complete 180, Nickel being a stud immediately, the DL taking a gigantic step forward, Daniels turning into a WR1, Trader going for 800+ yards. That’s probably not happening.

The other thing people forget is how healthy we were in 2024. That’s almost guaranteed not to happen next year. What massive contributors did we lose to serious injuries? No one. We lost a Richard for like three games. Alston missed like 4 and he was a rotational piece. Bain missed meaningless non-cons and VT. We were extremely healthy for all intensive purposes.

- EXACTLY like Mario drew it up!!! EXACTLY what Mario is expecting!!

You can “BANK” on it!

Agreed.

If the ACC conference champion automatically gets a playoff berth, no one will really care if we lost OOC games if we're strolling into the ACCCG with a playoff berth on the line.

So we'll be the same as the gators this year and the talk will all be about trajectory.

I'm fed up with mediocrity. When Mario was hired, there was lively debate about why it shouldn't take 3-5 years with the portal. We're going into year 4 with the expectation of it being worse than year 3. How is that a rebuild?

IMO, the portal has made it harder to have lasting success. Yes, you can be lucky like FSU and hit on portal evals and have a stellar season (or 2), but if you can't bank on players being in your system to build depth, and having upperclassmen with familiarity with schemes, it might be tougher for coaches now than before.

It also diminished the value of great high school recruiting.

The argument for it is all about perception. We saw this year the talking heads talked about who you beat more than who you lost too. Add in Miami preseason ranking, probably between 15-20, and the ACC not receiving any benefit of doubt and you have a huge came. Same thing when UF comes to town.

In the end, it won't matter if Miami were to win the ACC....

Mario laughed at the trajectory of FSU and UF this season mocking them like a meathead, and now look at our trajectory -- what a ******* class clown show we have of arrogance -- the right way is:
- HC mocking rivals, then folding
- DC laughing at adjustments, then getting fired
- OC posting Major League gifs mocking Lagway, then running out a QB who can't throw

Especially tough for a coach that has adapted to the portal by focusing on one position group at a time, like they will all be here in 2030 coming up from the Single A Tarpons...

And that once we lose, we fold. So getting our doors blown off by ND and UF in the first 4 weeks (or even losing to them at all), looking back to Mario's 2022, 2023 and 2024 and how the team never improves as the season goes on, and the folding potential and social media hot seat will be ramped up.
