Some thoughts on the Wake game after rewatch

Darren Rizzi. Interim HC New Orleans Saints

He will not get the permanent HC job with the Saints. Mario needs to bring him back to South Florida to take over the Specials Teams. Hopefully working with his daughter and coaching his son will provide the extra motivation over taking another NFL special teams job.

Danny Kalter might have a bright future in coaching but he obviously isnt ready.
Should’ve been relieved after Louisville if we are being honest. He can go to fiu for all I care but coaching special teams is not hard.

Only Miami we kill game changing momentum. Louisville after a defensive fumble td we give up the worst kickoff return on top of that the most obvious fake punt that we gave up on their own side of the field.

Wake Forrest we could put the game away after that pick six but yet again another egregious kickoff return td.

He needs to put Murray in on kick off to put it out of the end zone if since hes not going to coach up kick off coverage and rewarding bad play. Andy doesn’t have enough hang time to try putting it on the one yard line.

Forgot to add I have yet to see a phase of special teams without a flag. It’s not even comical it’s just pathetic.

I dont want to rewatch the game but judging by the snap counts we only played 2 corners yesterday. OJ and DPJ.

So did Meesh just move to our nickle corner for this game? But then Markeith had only 15 snaps. So did we just not run nickle defense yesterday? Curious about this change first time weve done it this season
We ran a traditional 4-3 for most of the game. Seemed to work well against that offense.

Completely agree. Absent TFLs, it's hard to get an offense consistently behind schedule. Teams know if they can just get six yards in three downs that they've got a good chance of converting on fourth.
It’s a big issue . This is not the style of defense that should be played at Miami.

Meesh is good in the slot. Why was he not playing there before? He's not a free safety. And gosh, kicking out Mesidor to DE made a HUGE difference. We basically had two Bains out there! In fact, he (Mesidor) was even more active and disruptive (and both did a good job sealing edges).

10 win season. Massive step forward as a program. We’re in the drivers seat for a playoff spot, just can’t choke against Cuse.

But dear god am I terrified about what a potential drop off looks like next year with no Cam. This is a team that has had to scrape and claw their way to 10 wins despite having the #1 offense, #1 QB, and a crazy easy schedule.

But I’ll savor the moment and enjoy this for what it is. Let’s go beat the pïss out of Cuse and win our first ACC title.
The team will be better next year, even if the QB isn’t as talented.

Guys ragging on Bain may not have noticed his sack late where he bulldozed a guy

Huge pause on that whole statement
I was **** talking him right before that. It was a good play but he was either man handled or rushed himself too wide out of the play far too many times before that. Had a clear sack a few plays prior and looked like a newborn giraffe and stumbled versus air and missed completely.

I believe it will be a close, low scoring, grind em out season.

I know a lot of people are saying Lyle should have and should be playing more

Not debating that but people asking why he wasn’t playing more earlier in the season remember we were throwing at will and Fletcher and Martinez are really good blockers

Not that Lyle isn’t or can’t be just saying it’s a crucial role in our offense
I love Lyle but Martinez is almost a guarantee to get a first down. He never goes backwards.

Ecstatic we eased Williams into the rotation finally. How'd he look?

I was looking for Zaquan out there and didn't see him. Glad to learn he had 13 snaps. Did anyone see how he did and what the backfield personnel were when he was out on the field?

More MW, ZP, RW, DD please.

Tyler Baron won’t respond to the benching well and we know that. There’s a reason y’all didn’t highlight his Storm Sessions on CIS. It would have been open season in the comments lol.

Boy is cooked and stealing checks.

Mesidor looked great back on the outside and I’m excited for Alston’s return.
Must’ve missed it. What did he say?

I'm not. We'll be a more balanced offense. Perhaps relying more on the running game, which is just fine. Is Will Howard a Supreme QB? NO. He's a game manager with elite players around him. Howard is really just an average passer. We just need a capable QB who doesn't turn the ball over. It's either Emory or a transfer QB. I'm good with either.

No doubt Lyle is our most complete back in years-

He was the best RB at Aquinas in years or since the days of James White and Giovanni Bernard-

He’s better than both at this stage-

Mesidor belongs at DE, he sets the edge much better than Baron-

Moten has developed nicely no doubt.

I’m not going to pretend I was feeling great the first couple hours of that game. But the end result was just what the doctor ordered. Four-score win, no injuries, and a bounce-back game for the defense. Some thoughts upon rewatch:

- The Canes held Wake to their worst offensive performance of the season. Seven points, 3.4 yards per play, and 12 first downs. That first possession shook us as fans, but this was dominant defense coming out the bye.

- I hope we continue to increase the snaps for Bobby Pruitt and Popo Aguirre. This team lacks guys in the back seven who can run laterally and stop people as tacklers. It seems that every horizontal play the last couple months has gone for 3-4 extra yards due to lack of speed, lack of striking, or both. These guys have the ability to help there.

- Two developmental success stories: Jacolby George and Ahmad Moten. George has continued to improve his toughness and effort when he could’ve washed out. Moten has emerged as an impactful ACC DT in Year 3. We need to do a good job of retention in the offseason, because I believe there are several talented players deep on the roster with the ability to develop if they are patient and committed.

- The offensive line was overwhelming yesterday. We ran for 228 yards (7.4 YPC) and gave Cam Ward hours to throw. The film was a highlight reel, with defenders being pushed 7 yards downfield. This is why Cam came to Miami- we have the ability to dominate when him and his top receiver are not at their best.

- Elijah Arroyo is in the class of our most talented tight ends. David Njoku is one of the best in the NFL, and I believe a healthy Arroyo is even better. Njoku has rare explosive athleticism, but Arroyo is just as fast and a better route runner with more consistent hands.

- We need to clean up the operation when we go tempo. We’ve had multiple procedure penalties that have stalled our momentum.

- OJ Frederique deserves first team All-ACC consideration. We are taking these clean sheets for granted. He’s been consistent as a tackler, too.

- Our kickoff coverage is a significant concern. Any team we’ll play the rest of the way will have talented returners, and the margin for error will be thin. Markeith Williams had tough reps on this TD and the Louisville TD. I wonder if a coverage safety with limited physicality is the best option for his role.

- Jordan Lyle is the most complete running back prospect we’ve had in a while. He has NFL size, he has balance, he has quick feet, he’s tough, he has vision, he can protect, and he has speed. It would have been painful to see this guy running at Ohio State.

- I hope Tyler Baron reacts the right way to the benching. We need his pass rush down the stretch, but he has to be disciplined and committed against the run.

- It was nice to see us get the young DL in there at the end. Any time we see Josh Horton in uniform playing is a positive.

- I love the way Mark Fletcher plays the game. Right after he made a 30-yard run to get us in the red zone, he was mauling a defender for Damien Martinez as a lead blocker. He is part of a championship-caliber rotation at RB.

- Dylan Day continues to flash on special teams. I’m excited to watch his development at safety. He reminds me a bit of a young Sheldrick Redwine.

- Pretty good crowd at the Rock. Miami-Dade schools are out all week, so you had some fans on vacation and some UM students visiting home. It was very loud when Meesh Powell had that pick 6.

Finally someone talks about lack of speed we need to upgrade that aspect on the D if we are ever going to get to a good defense again..

I also expect our Defense and Special Teams to improve a bit next year.

So I am also not worried about next season.
