Some real talk. Lots of real talk...

IMO, today three plays enabled us to escape embarrassment -- Walford's fantastic grab, the personal foul on Duke's run on our second touchdown drive when it would have been third and long, and the questionable (in person, haven't seen TV coverage) pass interference on Wake Forest during our winning drive.

At first I thought this was a questionable call too since it looked like our player ran into their DB, but the announcer pointed out that you can not impede the offensive player and the DB did put himself in the WR's path (although probably not intentionally) while not making a play on the ball.

This. It was sort of a la Red Sox impeding the base runner (obstructing)'s path to home plate in that respect. A wise call by a wise, wise man /unless it went against us.

Big execution problems today.

2nd scoring drive:
- 3rd and 9
- WR gets behind Burns and Jenkins for 50+ yards
- 3rd and 10
- Bad tacking allows 4th and 1.
- Bad read by Bush - TD

3rd Scoring Drive
- Missed tackle on long TD score
- 4th and 5 - DL drifts to where the WR is rather than where the WR will be.

Offense
- Several drives stalled by Morris inability to adjust in the pocket
- Towards the end of the game, 2nd down blitz - two defenders from Morris direct sight line to the left and Morris does not get the ball to an open TE in the flats
- Same key drive. 3rd down. WF blitzes - OL picks it up, Morris gets nervous and does not complete a pass to open receivers

Watching the game, it was easy to say why didn't we just run, but there were also plays called all game that Morris did not execute, but were open.

Next week we are going to be tested. I hope Coley can come up with a game plan to keep us competitive and the real Stephen Morris steps up.

I'm a true Cane fan, but it is going to take a perfect game and some luck to beat FSU.

Unfortunately, I think we've been seeing the real Steve Morris. He's an erratic guy, and the coaches seem to be at the point now where they've lost trust in him.

Got to agree with us seeing the real Morris because he has looked that way all year. I would love to see us borrow BC's game plan and try and run the ball down their throats.

Guys like Figueroa and Kirby need to play more. Yeah they have a lot to learn but the only way they will is if they get game experience. We did it last year and there were growing pains but we're better this year because of it so the coaches should get them some more playing time. And put Burns at safety I do not want to see Highsmith back there trying to cover the fsu receivers.

You realize that the long td to that UNC tight end was on Kirby. Not sure why the player on the bench is better. also, everyone was clamoring for Burns, boy yesterday was a tough game for him...ijs

not happy watching the game, but I'm happy with the 7-0. We will be fine, the guy at the helm will have us right!

Regarding the speed issue, we have to prepare ourselves for the notion that some of this is by design. Offensively we don't have an Andre Johnson and we lack some depth but Duke, Dorsett, Hurns, Waters, and Coley is a foursome that we can take as upper echelon IMO. We're missing a dominant force and depth but that's ok given where we were.

The D is a different story. We definitely need more explosive players at safety no question. But up front we're a different team philosophically. We've always been built on undersized quick twitch players that penetrate and disrupt. Our last defensive system (and many prior) was all about getting upfield, disrupting the backfield, and pressuring the passer. We now have a philosophy built upon size, controlling the line of scrimmage, and keeping things in front of us. We substitute in some explosion but our base defense emphasizes size and physicality--275 lb ends, an interior plugger, and sizable backers. Perryman is a 6' linebacker that they ASKED to get to 240 lbs. When you think of our more explosive players, where will they play if they play consistently? McCord will probably be asked to get to 260 lbs and replace Shayon Green I think--the tradeoff will be some of his speed likely. Muhammad has no position next year he is unlikely to play except in pass rushing situations. Jermaine Grace can play nickel but I don't see him playing in our base defense until he's 230+ lbs. None of this is to say that we can't get more explosive defensively (especially in the secondary), but we don't look like we're interested in being the type of defense we've been historically. That's for better or worse it's all about the results.

This could be the best team in FSU history.

This is an average UM team at best, historically speaking.

It really doesn't matter what happens Saturday. We'll still get a second chance against them in the ACCCG, and maybe a miracle is possible.

But, but, Morris only missed on 11 passes!

4. Why the **** would you allow a team to line up its OL in 5 yard splits and not shoot any of those gaps? I don't get it. How about some blitzes in the A gaps and you'd get to Price before he could set his back foot.

I wondered this all game. Why not right before the snap move all the DL to the gaps and force them to adjust with a TO or a delay of game. Shoot a LB or S through one of those gaps.

With another off-season of UTOUGH, I think Muhammad will get in the 255 range and take Shayon Green's spot (he's currently 2nd team behind him as a true freshman). Based on recruiting, we're bringing in a ton of speed rushers who we can substitute in waves.

The days of the first-team 230-LB DE or 215-LB linebacker are over, but we're bringing in big guys that can run.

Nailed it!!!!!

Say what you want about Fisch but he refined Morris' and Jacorry's game. I think his absence is why Morris is performing horribly.

I don't know. Over the past few years, Bama has had guys that were big, fast, and explosive on d. Were they as fast as the old school canes? Nope. But they sure don't look anything like the guys that we are trotting out there either.

1. We are still pretty slow. We lack those electric guys on offense and defense that just accelerate past people or explode into them on defense. There are too many plays where we're just too slow to get there to make the play. Looked like we were running in quick sand for much of the first half. I'm sick of hearing about Miami speed because we're more of a grinding and mauling well-conditioned team than we are a fast explosive team. We badly need an infusion of speed on both sides of the football.

Agree with everything, especially the quoted part.

We're getting there on offense, but defensively, we're not explosive. Guys like AJ, Cornileus, and Green should not be getting burn in the 4th quarter of a close game.

Green I think has actually been pretty good this year. By the way, he got his 3rd sack yesterday. Not bad for a 5th year guy who had zero career sacks coming into this season. He also had 1.5 tackles for loss.

Fisch completely focused on playing within the scheme and it was a good one. Play calling wasn't his strong suit though. He was a very good mechanical & defensive read guy too.

Don't misunderestimate the notion that this team of young players are still learning how to win as the perceived favorite going into these conference games against teams that look at the Miami game as a way to get their season back on track.....

The role will flip this week against FSU, the pressure is all on FSU which hopefully will allow the Canes to play free and easy and lead to another epic choke job by the Noles...

before Golden arrived, we would be out of shape in the 4th qtr, we were undersized, we would shut down, and sometimes even quit.

i like the trajectory of the program. we're not there yet, but we are sailing in the right direction

I'm most worried we'll stay in base personnel too much and FSU will take advantage of that.

Especially on 1st and 2nd down when it seems like D refuses to put AWM and McCord in. Unless it's 3rd and long they're not seeing the field. If I were an opposing coach I'd pass on early downs when Chick and Green are playing DE. Those guys aren't creating any kind of pass rush. And behind that our guys still have huge gaping holes in our zone D.

On offense I'm hoping Coley finally decides to commit to the run early in the game instead of only in the fourth when we need to make a game-winning drive. I don't understand why we don't establish the run earlier.
