Some real talk. Lots of real talk...

We have no pass rush because we play guys who can't rush the passer. IMO, McCord and AQM should have played more snaps today. They were not running the ball.

FSU is still ahead of us, but I think we have closed the gap from last year. We will represent. FSU is going to have to bring it to beat us. We ain't afraid of those punks.

Great wrote up in terms of accuracy, articulation and candor, the only thing IMO missing is we need to improve our tackling. Thanks for intel and insight.

Agree with the lack of explosiveness observation. Part of this is attributable to reaction time as well. We seem to lack instincts in sniffing out plays. There was so many instances today watching this defense play where I was waiting for a defender to close on a play and it seemed they always arrived too late to break up the play.

Any time you're relying on so many guys on defense with limited physical ability you will never be an elite team. They simply can't get there fast enough. There were so many examples of it in this game where we looked to have the play defended, and Wake's players just made a little move and gained a bunch of extra yards.

We don't have enough athletes out there yet. Our speed and explosion at LB and S is nowhere near where it needs to be for us to be an elite level team. It's a lot of smoke and mirrors at this point.

All that and nothing about our dreadful offense? At Home against Wake and you struggle like that scoring points?

The passing game has gone from unbelievable under Jedd Fisch to flat out atrocious under James Coley. Same freakin players. The goal line offense on your own 20 with Malcolm Lewis as the only wideout is laughable.

James Coley looks like the weakest link.

I'm not going to get into this stupid Ned Fish vortex. He's gone, and he wasn't that great when he was here. If you want to crown him and turn him into some legend that he wasn't then go ahead and crown his ***.

I'm just happy that we are finally overachieving not underachieving. We are beating teams we should and not dropping the ball all together. The talent and depth isn't there yet, but we are not that far off, I'm gonna enjoy the rest of this year though, again, nice to finally overachieve.

Great post.
I am waiting for the real Canes' fans to come out and call you all kind of names for calling us a far from elite team and FSU being on a different level. In essence, you are saying it will be very hard for us to win against an elite team like FSU if we play like we have played the last two games. Something many posters have said but got slaughtered for.

I'm a dyed in the wool homer, but it should be obvious to everyone that this fsu team is on a different level than we are right now. We can get there, but their QB changes the whole deal for them. Football is such a QB-centric game, and this dude's a once every blue moon type of QB.

We will need to be almost perfect, and they will need to help us out. All the stars will have to line up perfectly for us. I'd consider it a virtual miracle if we go in there and beat them.

Sad but true.
However our kids won't concede an inch for 60 minutes.
I hope they can keep themselves in the game and build some confidence.

GO CANES!!!!!

The missed tackle on the wheel route for 6 was a heart breaker.

I'm convinced we look slow because of the defensive scheme. The few times we've blitzed this season and play man press we look fast, quick, aggressive, etc. (see UF game)

I'm not buying it. We blitz a lot, and our blitzers look like they're playing pattycake. They look like they're going half speed on the blitzes, and the minute they're faced with any resistance they just latch onto the guy who is resisting them and try to stalemate him.

We often blitz late and without disguise. A couple times today, we showed our blitz early, the WF QB literally pointed and changed pass pro, and the blitz didn't get there. That makes the guys look slower. Our DL is often asked to engage in order to keep contain. That makes guys look slower. Part of that is our style of D and part of that seems like a conscious decision because we're still playing guys who are not dynamic.

We don't have world beaters out there yet - I agree on that. We may not be as dynamic as we will be, but my point (and I think the point of DeadPoets) is that there are instances where we look slower than what we are.

Today is an example where our scheme was used against us and guys looked like they were on their heels because of it. Like Golden said, you have to tip your cap to a really good game plan by WF.

I think it was a nice plan by Wake, and they're actually a decent team. But we're still very limited athletically defensively. There are too many guys on the field who lack explosion and change of direction ability.

I agree that FSU is a better team but if we play with the intensity we are capable of, and get some breaks, we can do it.

We need to keep the game close though and let our conditioning even the game out at the end.

It's going to take the best played game we have played in....well I cant remember

I just want to win the Coastal. I came into this season thinking we'd probably lose 3 or 4 games. I had no idea who we'd lose them to, but it looks like we might do better than that projection. So far, it's been a great season that's exceeded everyone's REASONABLE expectations. I'm like you; I'm just going to enjoy it from this point on. Beat Vag Tech, and win the Coastal.

I agree with that. I just also note some things guys are asked to do that make them look more hesitant - which makes them look slower. You mentioned it in your original post (being dictated by WF's splits).

Look at it this way, WF was a 24 point dog to us, and came into our house and almost won. Anything's possible. The discrepancy is about the same as it was for WF today.

when you have chick and green as your defensive ends on the first and second down you will not get any pass pressure if the team decides to pass

No idea why we insisted on lining our DEs up practically 30 yards from the QB and leaving those A gaps totally unchallenged. You gotta believe that you could put a fast player there, let him shoot that gap and he'd be able to get to Price before Price could even get into his drop. The defender would be untouched because the splits were so ridiculously wide.

The very best thing is that no one will give us a chance.

I'm ready to watch that game and hope we do something unusual. **** it.

Agree with 99% of the post. Would like to add 4th quarter - that's where U-tough is really paying off, same as last week.
When my wife came home (goes out to avoid the screaming) I was yelling for them to blitz the middle, they did, the announcer noted so, and she noted how long have you been yelling for that - 2 quarters so far Lol!

That's the "sticking with what we do." It's a deficiency. I'm glad WF roasted it because it means we'll be better prepared if FSU or VTech try it. It had already been used against us earlier this year, but since we stuck with what we do and the opponent self-destructed, maybe we didn't appropriately address it. Now, we have to.

Exactly right. Might sound strange, but I'll actually watch that game more relaxed than I did the last 2 because I know it will take a Herculean effort to win it. I was dying with every snap of these last 2 games because they'd likely kill our hopes for the Coastal by losing.
