I think at this point it's just a matter of best risk/reward candidate available for what Mario's looking for... I'll bet a great recruiter isn't at the top of his list for an OC (because like you said, you can get elite recruiters at the position coaches) but probably an elite planner/QB coach is... Dorsey is both, although we're not sure about his play calling..

Joe Brady went to LSU as a passing game coordinator with waaaaay less experience than Dorsey and turned LSU into one of the most prolific offenses ever and his career blew up..

I think if it were my call, I'd want a proven college OC as well with proven success... But maybe Mario feels comfortable enough with Dorsey's QB coaching and planning/scheming that he's willing to take a risk on the play calling part? the play calling part is the only part of Dorsey's resume (assuming recruiting isn't THAT important to Mario because of the rest of the staff) in my opinion that is questionable.. and even that is only partially questionable. from what i understand, the passing game coordinator pretty much calls all the critical downs (third downs, red zone, obvious passing downs...

anyways, anytime a coach is being looked at, i like to see what his current fanbase thinks about him.. as you know, Bills fans are diehards.. their fans are expecting Dorsey to be their next OC and most seem pretty happy with it..

Funny thing to me is that you are discussing this with a guy who has been in the business and you are disagreeing with him. Dorsey is not ready and he has never ran an offense in college football before. He is a pure pro style guy.

Oh, so you want to hire a pro style guy to run a different offensive system.

You really can't make this **** up.....LMFAO!
Coaches know numerous different schemes to begin with. Usually they adjust their playbook to the personnel they have. For instance Brian Dabol was a NFL OC and came to Alabama in 2017 and ran mostly everything out of the gun with 3 WRs and some from under center thing's.

Elite everywhere he's been, almost immediately. Don't let these fools distract you with the one year at FSU nonsense. Dude can coach some ball.

But, but, but, the loser-dipsh!te players at the school that set a record for Portal entrants didn't like him...

Clint Hurtt for DC is a name that's been brought up a lot

isn't this a discussion board? i'm saying there is risk/reward to every candidate we hire.. Mario may be more comfortable with Dorsey's risk/reward than somebody else like Briles.. if we know $$$$ isn't an issue, and Mario ends up picking Ken Dorsey, then it's not me disagreeing with htown (who I know has had time both college and nfl working in the industry), but Mario... i'm just offering an alternative point of view on the "Ken Dorsey doesn't have enough experience" opinion (which I personally agree with and he wouldn't be my first pick but would be comfortable with the hire if Mario hired him for the reasons i stated)...

Understood. Good discussion and I guess we will see soon enough.

Idk why people get so upset with the thought of Hurtt as DC. He's gotten a lot of experience since he's been here. He's been groomed by Pete Carroll as his AHC/DL coach for the last 5 year's. Mario interviewed him for the Oregon DC job last season
No one is getting upset at the prospect of him being DL coach and having a Co-DC title. Also, just because he interviewed or was being considered for the DC role at Oregon, doesn't mean that's the case now.

Wouldn't giving him a Co-DC title effect the other Co-DC we hire? Let's say we want to hire Derek Mason from Auburn, would he really want to come here to be Co-DC?

Seriously doubt if complete coaching staff filled until after majority of bowl games have been played. Mario may already have some locked in but contracts not being signed yet because of bowl games or NFL playoff games

Saban offered Chris Partridge a LB Coach job. Which usually means he thinks he could be his Next DC. Alabama LB coaches are usually next in line to be their DCs after being groomed for a bit
