Signing Day Buzz: 6 Days Away

View as article
This is not a positive development, and the coaches cannot comment on this publicly. By Ice's own admission, however, we asked him for a commitment and Kirkland declined. At that point, we told him we were going to use that spot for someone else if he wasn't taking it. Seems we were upfront and honest. But we are going to take a beating for it in the short term, at least.

I'm pretty sure Ice also stated that Kirkland was committing to Miami.

edit: see post above

I don't want Ice's commitment for Kirkland. I want Kirkland's. Ice can't sign Kirkland up for us.

Not so sure, according to this article ICE told Cane's coaches he was committing to Miami.

Right, Ice said he's coming...then when Kirkland met with Barrow, he said only that Miami was in his top 3 and he'd decide on signing day. Kirkland never said he was committing.

The old solid as a rock uncommitted commitment from someone unwilling to commit.

And again, I'd like to point out we haven't heard UM's side of this because...we can't.

oh ok I see what you mean, I was assuming if the coach said so to just ride with it and trust in the coach and the player.

Going along this theme then I would assume Golden and Co have done the same to other potential commits? May explain some rumors on Coley being a silent but not others due to no leaks?

All signs pointed towards ESPN 150 offensive tackle Denver Kirkland (Miami/Booker T. Washington) selecting Miami on Wednesday, but that won't be happening.

According to Booker T. Washington head coach Tim Harris, the Hurricanes just couldn't wait for him. A new commitment, one that hasn't gone public, on the defensive side of the ball apparently has taken his place.

"They told him that they couldn't promise him that he could have a scholarship on signing day," Harris explained. "They got a commitment this morning from a defensive lineman, and so they chose to go ahead with that route. It is the same reason Ira Denson canceled his visit this weekend. That's pretty much what it was, it was a numbers game for them."

Kirkland, rated the 12th-best offensive tackle in the nation, wasn't exactly happy about how it all turned out, obviously.

Harris explained that Kirkland was just days away from fulfilling a dream he's had for a while, and now it's gone, so close to the finish line. But his situation, announcing on signing day, was well known for a while.

"He's hurt; I think he's extremely hurt -- upset," Harris described. "I think, as a kid, he looked at Miami as a place that he wanted to go to growing up. You know, being a couple days away from possibly signing to the school that he's liked all these years -- but he wasn't ready to commit yet, because there were two other schools he liked, and he wanted to be completely sure. He's had this signing day announcement for a long time now on ESPN. It wasn't a surprise to anyone that he was waiting until then, but they got a commitment from a defensive lineman. It hurt, but he's got to pick up the pieces the best he can and realize that it just wasn't in the cards for him."

Now just three teams stand in the race for his signature next week. And all three have gotten an official visit at one point or another.

"Florida State, Arkansas and Ole Miss," said Harris of the finalists.

It is unclear how this affects the decision of five-star outside linebacker Matthew Thomas, Kirkland's teammate, who is closely considering Miami, too.

Wait, didnt he say he assured Miami DK was coming? da ****?

I heard something a while back that I was hesitant to post on this board...but given tonight's event who the **** cares.

Don't be surprised if Ice Harris ends up on the Florida State staff shortly after signing day.

It would explain a **** of a lot.

Relax.

Not saying it's a fact....just saying it would explain a **** of a lot.

I can tell you one thing....someone is flat out lying here. I have a hard time believing it's Golden given the fact that something like this can ruin a recruiting cycle.

Kirkland either really did have a grade problem or they got the sense that both him and Kirkland had not intention on committing.

Ice's comments don't make sense...and the fact he was tight with Shannon ....well....you know.

Let's see what happens but the true story hasn't come out yet. I doubt we willingly dropped the kid.

Before everyone goes off the handle about Harris taking jobs at FSU or steering every kid away from UM, can anyone at least confirm it was him. Judging by twitter it is his kid, Ice Harris Jr, and Manny is too lazy to distinguish between Jr and Sr in the article. I don't live in Miami anymore so maybe the kid is well regarded as well, but just something I wanted to bring up.

I wonder if the coaches can comment on Ice's public remarks, without specifically mentioning a recruit?

Can't really take a chance talking about it until Kirkland signs somewhere.

A few days away from fulfilling his lifelong dream, that he wasn't sure about yet and could have fulfilled at any moment for the past year. SEEMS LEGIT!

So how is this golden fault? They say your not guaranteed a ship on signing day. Tell us should we save you one? He basically says no. Kirklands choice.

Tim Reynolds@ByTimReynolds I'm no recruiting genius, but if Miami is telling four-star kids who'll end up at FSU, "Sorry, no vacancy at The U," isn't that a good sign?

Never ever?

Never ever.

Let me just say this; what's the point in telling a kid you want you can't wait? If there's a spot today, there's a spot on Wed. if its a player you want.

This leads me to believe this isn't the full story.

I will say this as well, if it's grades, and you're sure he can't get in, what's the harm of letting him commit to keep the relationship with Thomas, Booker T, and Ice? You still sign the same number of kids with the assumption he's not getting in. If he pulls off a miracle and qualifies, scholarships open up due to discipline, transfers etc.

Again, the fact that Miami wouldn't just shoot themselves in the foot on purpose tells me there's more to the story.

What a cruddy update to read though. A class w/o Thomas, Kirkland and single-handedly damaging a relationship with a pipeline school would be a serious gut punch.
