I recommend 11 defenders. It always looks like 8. Even during the miserable seasons of the '70s I don't remember so many plays with wide open spaces.
How can D'onofrio think he can change four defenders late in the game when Boston College is trailing and running hurry up with the clock moving? Were they supposed to wait? Our guys weren't within 3 yards of the sideline when that ball was snapped. Handing them that first down was potentially critical. I was hoping Ron Cherry would announce, "15 men on the field," for shock and embarrassment purposes. D'onofrio always has that angry/baffled look on his face.
Regardless, a 4-3 is dependent on the caliber of the defensive tackles and we've been subpar for years. Defensive ends pick up the sacks and headlines but the defensive tackles disrupt the intention and shorten the play. I'll get excited again when we find a young monster for the middle. In the meantime, Curtis Porter might want to get healthy. I'm not exactly looking forward to Klein having all day to execute that stretch read option.
