Randy Shannon bears some degree of responsibility in the Nevin Shapiro case. If Randy indeed knew how bad Shapiro was he did a lousy job of informing anyone other than what he says he told Kirby Hocutt. Randy Shannon didn't tell the Provost, the President or the Board of Trustees and apparently he didn't tell his own coaching staff as most of them seemed to have a cozy relationship with Shapiro. Think about it, Randy Shannon, didn't even keep his own coaches away from Shapiro according to the reports.

Um, not to defend Randy Shannon or strip away any culpability he may have had in all this, but didn't he actually tell everyone to stay away from that slimeball? Again, perhaps that's not enough, but it's not as if he advocated for the guy, either

This, one thing I can say about Shannon is he did warn everyone from players to the coaching staff to stay away from him, the man sucked *** as a HC but he did try and protect the program from that little POS

Randy had spies everywhere and knew what everybody was doing, except for when Shacunto was around apparently

I give Randy some credit for that telling coaches if they had contact with Shapiro they are gone and for players to stay clear of Shapiro.. Now why didn't he follow up on this? Shannon was there under Coker and at some point had to know Shapiro was bad news. Randy always said he had spies all over town so how did Shapiro pull all this off including this stuff on South Beach without someone spotting them? I blame Coker more than anyone since he was HC when most of the bad stuff went down but Randy was the DC then. However we had several players that got suspended by Golden for stuff they did with Shapiro when Randy was HC. Some of this was rumored to be on official Recruiting trips.

This stuff went of for many years so where was Randy when Shapiro was all over these guys and every coach knew who Shapiro was. I know it hasn't been proved but a few coaches are rumored in this mess. This Shapiro crap when on for so many years at some point Randy should have caught wind of something with Pee Wee in the locker room and Pee Wee's boss knew about it.

I believe that ultimately the blame lies on Kirby Hocutt. As a head coach, Shannon did what he was supposed to do. Warn all of his subordinates and players, then he reported his concerns to his boss.

Hocutt on the other hand had the most to lose. The job of an AD is to generate funds for the department. What do you do when an unproven coach comes to you to complain about the person who is donating the most? Basically the one who will make or break your job with his donations. My guess is he eventually did the right thing but it did leak out to the media that Shannon was having a bad relationship with boosters. That leads me to believe they might not have been in agreement about the situation initially.

The idea that Shannon was here the entire time Shapiro was operating here, and didn't know the rules were being broken, is just not believable to me. People who give him a pass on this are believing that he didn't like Shapiro and warned everyone to stay away from him, but didn't know rules were being broken. Seriously, I can't see how anyone buys that. He would have to be the most out of touch HC in America.

OK, maybe I just tripped over it.

Randy Shannon may be the reason we don't get a LOIC sanction.Shapiro himself said RS gave him a hard time going back to the Wilfork days, you can blame him for hurricanes, tornadoes, and tsunamis, but RS gets his only high mark as a head coach in this area.

This is very well written. While none of us know the true story, Hocutt was courting Shapiro even after Randy warned about him, so if you are going to blame one single person, that should be Hocutt.

Agree. Randy was DC under Coker and Randy was HC when Shapiro pulled all this stuff off. Randy's job even at DC was to talk to the players and make sure they were not breaking the rules. Sure Coker is more to blame but Randy is also not off the hook since he was a Barney Fife at stopping Shapiro. Even after Coker left and Randy was HC that speech sounded great telling the coaches if they worked with Shapiro they are gone and telling the players to stay away from Shapiro. So tell me why isn't Randy making sure his coaches and players aren't going near Shapiro if he knows Shapiro is dirty? All that speech proved to me was Randy knew some of his coaches and players were close with Shapiro. Now it is Randy's job to stop this. Six or Seven years is a lot of time to catch wind of this stuff even for a Barney Fife.

If this Allegations turns out to be true then I blame Randy even more than Coker since he hired these coaches.

On a Friday night in 2008, Miami assistant coach and recruiting coordinator Clint Hurtt arranged to bring Armstrong and two other Miami recruits – Andre Debose and Dyron Dye – to Shapiro’s $6 million Miami Beach mansion for the purposes of the booster recruiting the players. Then-wide receivers coach Aubrey Hill also attended the players’ visit to Shapiro’s home. http://sports.yahoo.com/investigations/news?slug=ys-ray_ray_armstrong_allegations

During his Friday night recruiting pitch, Shapiro took Armstrong, Debose and Dye through his mansion, stopping at one point to showcase a specially built closet filled with game-worn college and NFL jerseys of former Hurricanes greats. After the tour of the house, Shapiro took the three players for a drive on Alton Road in his $200,000 Mercedes S65.

After the tour of his home and the ride in his Mercedes, Shapiro gave former Miami equipment assistant Sean Allen approximately $2,000 to $3,000 in cash and instructed him to show Armstrong, Debose and Dye a good time. Shapiro said Allen ultimately used the money to take the players to nightclubs, including Take One ****tail Lounge and strip club.

Shapiro said Debose, Armstrong and Dye also were at his house for another gathering. Shapiro said the players were served food and drinks. Shapiro said another recruit, Olivier Vernon, was also on hand for this gathering.
