SFbay's Random Thoughts from the uf Game

It's hard to get a gauge on Coley so far since (A) it's only been 2 games and (B) in those two games circumstances have led to the type of games he's called.
Vs FAU, it was his 1st game with the Gators up next so he couldn't really open the play book and kept it pretty vanilla. Still the offense moved the ball and if not for some drops that offensive output would have been a lot more.
Vs UF in the 1st Qtr and a half is when we saw a glimpse of his true game calling and what we can expect going forward.
It doesn't take a rocket science to figure out that the offense went it to shell mode and went ultra conservative. It ended up working out for Golden but had we lost this game this decision would have been questioned by everyone and their mother.
Anyhow that's why we didn't see Morris attack the middle and kept everything outside.. Golden and Coley were trying to avoid turnovers at all cost. They put all their chips on playing the field position game with the defense stopping the Gators. Like I said, it worked out but this tactic could have easily backfired.

So more than anything I think this is the first time we get a glimpse of the Golden mindset when he has a lead against an opponent of UF's caliber.

Conditioning, depth, a few 5th yr transfer and another yr under the defensive scheme are reaping dividends.

Now wtf is going on with the O? How many times did Coley call in a new play after everyone was set?

The only other miscue on defense was not reacting well to the read option the first few times but they adjusted well and it wasn't a threat later in the game.

I just find it a bit comical that this board has destroyed coach D for a long time now and yesterday our defense wins the game against Florida. Now, we are right on to Coley.

That's exactly right.....and SF Bay has been ball buster #1 on Coach D.

You need to stop posting ****, son. NOW.

My take on coach D has been exactly this: We could not evaluate him fully over the last two seasons because of the lack of talent he had to work with. You will not find a single post where I said anything more than "I have concerns..."

Learn to use language efficiently and you wont come off like an ignorant ***.

Well not to be a ****, but you said "Put me in the camp that is very concerned about coach D'Onofrio". Link

Very concerned > concerns

Please allow me to enjoy the hilarity of people searching thru 20 pages of threads looking for something I said about coach D. lol

I will say this - There was a thread that surfaced about a year ago from the scout Temple board where a group of Temple fans were talking to Canes fans about coach D. It seemed the knowledgable Temple fans were saying that his bend but dont break mindset used to drive fans crazy. It seemed that they rarely got 3 & outs. Teams would always win the time of possession battle against Temple. I took that thread to heart when saying moving the needle from "concerned" to "very concerned." (lol, but Im actually kinda serious).

* In pro sports there's an expression that says, "There's no such thing as an 'ugly win' in the post season." In CFB that translates to, "There's no such thing as an ugly win against your rivals." Given that... Yesterday's win was a Da Vinci portrait overlaid on a Monet landscape. It will become more and more priceless over time.

* The single biggest difference between this year and last is the success of the Utough program. You see it most directly in the open field tackling. Over the last several years we saw our defenses show an inability to get off the field primarily because every carry netted our opponents and extra 3+ yards before we could get them to the ground. Make no mistake, Matt Jones is a beast of a running back who will have a very solid season, yet he got very few yards after contact yesterday. The on-field difference is amazing.

* My concerns about Stephen Morris continue. In the biggest game of his career, he had his worst performance. I will temper this comment with the next 2 bullet points.

* The people who said we would miss coach Fisch are being proven correct. I have very serious concerns about coach Coley as a game-planner and play caller. Why he continued to roll Stephen Morris to the short side, against him throwing arm is something I find inexplicable. As well, the predictability of his play calling was kinda scary. Once teams get enough film on Coley's UM offense, I fear that it may cost us a game that we wouldnt otherwise lose. We know he was brought in for his recruiting prowess, which is a known asset, but his gameday work MUST improve tremendously for us to win a national title.

* Last year Stephen Morris developed a really nice on-field vibe with Rashaun Scott. He was our best receiver last year. For some reason our coaching staff decided to bury him on the depth chart. I believe that is hurting Stephen Morris more than we realize. I've always known that QB's have a "go-to" guy that they use when nothing else works, for Morris in 2012 that was Rashaun Scott. Scott's best attribute is his ability to catch the ball while being covered. We have yet to find anyone else in our WR corps who can replace that. (I used to joke that whenever Ken Dorsey got in trouble he would just chuck the ******' ball in the general direction of Jeremy Shockey knowing that Shockey would likely come down with it.) That was the dynamic between Morris and Scott last year. We needed that element yesterday.

* As much as it pains me to type this, I must. FRANCHISE IS ABSOLUTELY CORRECT (ouch :) ) That uf front seven is as dominant of a front 7 as you'll see in CFB. We will not see anything near the level of that unit until we face Alabama in the title game...(slow your roll there SFbay... :) )

* Im not a fan of Duke Johnson on kickoffs. The return game is a wholly different animal that running from scrimmage. Duke's biggest skillset comes from his ability to go from 2nd to 4th gear faster than anyone else. That's kinda useless in the return game where the skillset is sprinter speed with a couple of minor direction changes. I'd like to see a Herb Waters or Stacy Coley back there; Or others, but not our horse.

* An under-rated play in this game was coach muschamp going for 2 after their 1st TD. I dont know why he felt the need to channel his inner Chip Kelly but that move really cost uf more than met the eye. They had stolen the momentum with the blocked punt and quick TD, yet when they kicked off we still had the lead. Quality stop by our special teams D on that play.

* We NEVER trailed in this game. HUGE!!!

* For the first time in 2+ years I think we were able to evaluate coach Dorito. My take: He called a near perfect game and was totally on-point with his schematic planning. The only criticism I had of him was the one drive where we had a 2 score lead, Dorito wen to a prevent and we gave up a fast TD. That was the only drive of the game where we used a 3 man line. Aside from that one drive, his plan and execution were superb IMO.

* Final analysis on yesterday's game: The Canes are epic and the gators suck. Those of us who are long enough in the tooth knew this the whole time, it's just so wonderful to see the current and future generations of Canes fans learn this as well. As always, It's great to be...

Scott is injured, yeah?

Am I the only one that sometimes thinks he is watching TB3 when watching PD4? I loved his TD catch, however at times he just seems like he is on a different field. If we could combine his talents with Hurns game instincts we would have a pro-bowler. We need both of those guys to step up their games if we are going to improve in the passing game. I personally would have liked to see us use Coley on offense a bit more. However after seeing him kinda show some nerves in game 1 I understand the hesitation.

All in all it was a great game for the canes! Proud of those guys!

That was a nice play down the sideline by Hurns, but he seemed to me to not have too much speed. A real possession guy. Most of you guys have probably seen that already.

Thing about Hurns though is that he's reliable and he does all the little things. He's not spectacular, but Hurns is one of those guy that you appreciate after he's no longer there....

Agree with that. Even Hankerson, whom I basically liked a lot, was feast or famine. He'd make the spectacular catch and drop the easy one. He's done the same thing with the Redskins.

I agree. Maybe this is more true if you're older than 30, but there are few things better than beating the Gator. it doesn't matter if it's 2-0, 48-0, or 21-16.

I would like to beat them by at least 5000 points, but I'll take 21-16 as it took me back to 1966. The Canes invaded Gainesville to play uf and their Heisman trophy winner to be, Stevie Spurrier. UM had some guy named Ted Hendricks leading their D.

UM jumped out 21-0 and uf crept back to 21-16. UM punted with about 5 minuets to go and uf drove to the UM 30. Hendricks sacked SS on 1st down for about a 7 yard loss. On 2nd down, Hendricks was going to get him again, but SS threw the ball as hard as he could and hit Hendricks in the knee. On 3rd down, SS completed a short pass getting back about the amount of yards he lost on 1st down. The only thing I remember about 4th down was that it was an incompletion. UM then ran out the final couple minutes.

It was a pleasant drive back to Eaton Hall with my convertible top down. Any time it is UM 21 and uf 16, I'll take it.

Hurns is Andre King 2.0. (Just doesn't have a Santana and Reggie flanking him!)

THIS!!! The only coaching gaffs so far this year IMO, has been to get cute with the OL shuffling AND dropping Scott in the rotation and playing him in mop up time against FAU. He is our only prototypical NFL receiver who can make catches in traffic/with people all over him. He will be missed.

I dont understand this whole idea that the ppl who have concerns about Coley have been proven "correct"?
Agreed, same thing goes for D'nofrio's as a world beating DC now. We have 10 more games to judge both of them

I disagree with the downplaying of coach D, this was a big sign of being an almost completely different defense against a top opponent and our guys on D looked up to the task to execute everything that Coach D called and we saw his actual style of defense finally be equipped pay huge dividends. We had no games like this defensively last year or the year before that
1609 yards in 3 games and you were saying...

I give Coach cred for what happened yesterday. Still far from perfect and taking off for the NFL as the next game changing DC. Yesterday is one data point vs all last year. We have 10 more games to see the over all improvement.
bump...
