SFbay's Random Thoughts from the uf Game

I actually disagree with a few points:

1. While I don't think Morris played a good game, I don't think he was that bad either. UFs defense is really really good. The 2 TDs were perfect throws. He was under a heavy rush all game, didn't have a running game, and don't think he was put in good situations by the OC. He did make a terrible throw on the INT and missed a few check downs but overall I give him a B-. When our D is playing that well you don't want your QB to lose the game, and he didn't

2. Duke should be on KO returns in big games. He can change the game with one return.

3. Scott wasn't practicing well hence his drop on the depth chart. Scott hurt himself by almost getting kicked off the team and being suspended for the last few games last year. Nobody to blame but himself.

4. Still can't take anyone serious who uses the Dorito nickname.

*Right now* its all about chemistry and flow, which we have none to speak of. Like I have stated in other posts, I think its a lot of little things adding up to one big thing. It would help if Morris hit a few more passes, especially the "given" ones, ie, backs running into the flats etc. It would also help tremendously if Gus was the grinder backup we need to compliment Duke. We need to work in bonafide playmakers like Coley and Waters into the scheme more. So with all that, I just want to see the offense improve little by little before we hit the meat of our schedule, GT and beyond. We know we are going to have an elite defense by mid year, we know we have the best punter in the nation and should be very, very solid on special teams. We dont need *that much* on offense to win games, but we will need them at some point to put 30 on the board to win. I think The Don knows whats going on with his club and will do everything possible to get production from the Offense.

Good one. Because Fisch sure showed his offensive genius during the ND and KSU games last year. You're reaching way to hard with this.

Lets put this bogus argument to rest right now: We got shoved around in those games last year. The difference in those games had ZERO to do with play calling and everything to do with the Utough comment I made in the OP.

We didn't get "shoved around" yesterday on offense? What the **** game were you watching?

UiF has top 5 pick talent on their defensive line. Flowers is our only OL that has that type of ceiling and it showed yesterday for sure. At some point the UTough can only take you so far (I guess.....I hope)

I recognize the talent disparity in my post for a variety of reasons. That is also why I credit the offseason focus on S&C. We never loss he lead. We responded when we had to and our D didn't get pushed around.

What I though we sorely lacked yesterday was a true power back. Duke is explosive but we needed a true grinder yesterday.

we need a Gurley big time. Love Duke but hes not an inside guy. Also Coley will be fine, when u play great ds all OCs look like ****. My worry is SM....guys were open on replays he was scared to throw it.

Agree with most but Duke was the 2nd leaading Kick Returner in College last year..Your trippin sfbay

Disagree that yesterday was Morris' WOAT performance.

Disagree that Scott was our best WR last year.

Disagree about Duke on KR.

Disagree with Scott being Morris' go to guy.

Weren't some of you doubting golden as a game day coach last year? I think he has been better, Give coley time it's only been 1 game (I'm not counting FAU in this argument)

Am I the only one that sometimes thinks he is watching TB3 when watching PD4? I loved his TD catch, however at times he just seems like he is on a different field. If we could combine his talents with Hurns game instincts we would have a pro-bowler. We need both of those guys to step up their games if we are going to improve in the passing game. I personally would have liked to see us use Coley on offense a bit more. However after seeing him kinda show some nerves in game 1 I understand the hesitation.

All in all it was a great game for the canes! Proud of those guys!

I wonder where the screen game has gone? We haven't ran any type of screen to duke or crawford in the first two weeks iirc. Fisch would nickel and dime the heck out of teams being overly aggressive with their pass rushes. In 2 games, Fisch owned Bud Foster. I'd like to see Coley throw in some of those screens. They worked well.

So one game in his career Duke goes without a monster play on special teams, and now he should be taken off of them?

Whatever.

FWIW, I agree with him. If we had another couple of monsters in the stable, I would say lets do it. But with Duke being the Candy Store right now, and not much behind him, we cant be risking him on kick offs, IMO. He's basically our running game. And unless Morris can really start getting it together, the offense may need to rely on Duke even more than we anticipated this year.

Astute and thoughtful analysis, but I think you're wrong about there only being one drive where Digiorno used a three man front. My impression is that we mostly played a 3-4, and when I started to watch the youtube replay that seemed right. I haven't watched the entire replay yet.

Did we have a down lineman who would get up in a 2 point stance? Maybe that's why it looked like a four man front. I had trouble seeing numbers and names, since I watched a stream on a laptop screen. It was clear, but a small screen.

That was a nice play down the sideline by Hurns, but he seemed to me to not have too much speed. A real possession guy. Most of you guys have probably seen that already.

Thing about Hurns though is that he's reliable and he does all the little things. He's not spectacular, but Hurns is one of those guy that you appreciate after he's no longer there....

The other issue that is hampering Morris is the inability of our WRs to get separation. Not sure if this is schematic, but it is problematic.

I think some folks who were claiming we have the best receiving corps in the country may need to reasses, bc through two games we're above average, but not much more.

And Coley has to start exploiting the middle of the field.
