Scholarship distribution

There seems to be a lot of confusion on how much space we have left and many people for some reason think we have up to 10 spots left. I made a post explaining it on another thread but I’ll make a thread for it to stop the confusion a bit.
Okay I’ll break it down for you guys since I spent some time on this yesterday:
We had 79 scholarships coming in. Ahmon retires that’s 78. Jeff Thomas left that’s 77. Homer left as did feagles that put us at 75. 16 seniors left which put us at 59 but we gave the long snapper James a scholly which brought us back to 60. Cager left that’s 59. Jackson left that’s 58. Martin and Kennedy transferred in which put us back at 60 but then boulware declared bringing us back down to 59. Bolden and Osburn come in and now it’s 61. Jimmy Murphy and Marshall few are then put on schoolys and that puts us at 63. Mahoney transfers which brings us down to 62 again. Thomas returns and Martell comes in now that’s 64. To that 64 now you add the 14 true freshmen we signed and that puts us at 78. We also have a punter commit who has not signed yet which puts us at 79. 85 is the max allowed and 85-79 is 6 the number of scholarships we have left.

There will be more attrition book it...I say we have at a max 8-9 more to hand out, we had 14 early signees and 5 transfers. We should have 3 initial counters that we can use counting backwards to 2018 for a max total of 28.Few and Murphy dont count against the initial counters because they been in school for over 2 years now.

Unless something changed, no. I will go back and do some research to be double sure something hasn't changed.

Oh ok. Was just trying to get clarification on if you meant class total or overall total. Class total I saw the same thing that the grad transfer do not count towards that either.

Just like any other recruit, if a graduate transfer receives a scholarship he takes up an initial counter. If they come in midyear, and the school receiving the transfer has space in both classes, they can be counted backwards (i.e., 2018 class) or forwards (i.e., 2019 class), like an EE. That, and they don't have to sit out a year (like non-graduate, non-waiver transfers).

where did you see that, regarding spicer and james?

spicer wouldnt count as an initial counter if he was just granted a scholarship, as he had been here a couple years already. kennedy and KJ would count.

James tweeted it Dec 20th. CIS retweeted along with other players. As I stated in another thread, I understand he was offered a gray shirt but had to announce as PWO because he was enrolling in the Fall. Butler is done so timing makes sense.

Spicer was leaving bc he graduated. Staying confirm scholarship. Feagles left the program so giving him a grad scholarship made sense. We need a back up punter and a holder. Grad doesnt count against us.

Check out the other thread on the scholarship count.

This is from another thread. Sharing because it is easy to read.

Here’s what I got:

QB (4)
Martell
Williams
Perry
Weldon

RB (6)
Dallas
Lingard
Davis
Martin
Burns
George

WR (9)
Osborn
Pope
Hightower
Thomas
Wiggins
Harley
Njoku
Ezzard
Payton

TE (5)
Jordan
Mallory
Irvin II
Polendy
Hodges

OL (14)
Kennedy
Scaife
Herbert
Campbell
Hillery
Dykstra
Donaldson
Reed
Gaynor
Brown (“future endeavor” candidate)
Nelson
El-Gammal
Clark
Milo (has it been confirmed he was processed?)

DE (6)
Garvin
Rousseau
Patchan
Joyner
Harvey
Williams

DT (8)
Silvera
Ford
Bethel
Miller
Martin
Blissett
Holley
Muñoz

LB (9)
Quarterman
Pinckney
McCloud
Finley
Jennings Jr.
Steed
Wilder
Brooks
Huff

CB (6)
Blades
Ivey
Bandy
Bethel
Frierson
Couch

S (6)
Hall
Carter
Bolden
Knowles (“future endeavor” candidate)
D. Smith
K. Smith

ST (6)
Baxa
Hedley
Few
Murphy
James
Atkins (I read he was on scholarship)

The number I got was 79.

But that’s including Milo and Atkins, which could bring the total down to 77.

Also, George Brown and Robert Knowles are natural “future endeavor” candidates, as they’re both redshirt juniors who aren’t real contributors.

That could potentially bring the number down to 75.

So I’d say we have between 6-10 scholarships to offer.

Take 2 DT and get rid of Martin. I would say keep all the OL until next year then you get rid of Dykstra. Same with Knowles for depth. I hate saying it but Miami needs to keep the depth at spots.

Just reading over all of this...77 is the number...CanesAreAble list correct, as Atkins and Milo won't return. I think we'll take between 8-10

Definites imo:
QB
OL Grad or Frosh
DE
DT or DE
DT UCLA
LB Asante or Brothers (or whiff)
Emerson
DB

If more...1-2 from this group below (which would require certain attrition)

Additional DL, grad or frosh
Additional OL
M-A-R or J. Mitchell
Pickins
Additional DB

I say between 7-10 more

Let's say we have 77 on scholarship right now... Can we bring in 10 more (takes us to 87 and over the limit of 85), and cut 2-3 players after Spring ball is over?

I think there will be attrition at OL, QB, and WR

Don’t focus as much on the 85, focus on the 28 class counters.

14Freshman
5 transfers
1 pending (punter)
1 walkon (clay James)
21 total ships handed out
7 ship lefts

3 walkons that have been here 4 semesters can get ships without using counters from the class. Expect to see more upperclassmen walkons get ships when more departures happen as they only count toward the 85.

If you think Miami has more class counters then ask yourself why they would be handing out ships to Few, Murphy, Spicer vs grabbing more DL/OL?

7 more non-walkons

They don’t count until enrolled so we can sign 90 knowing kids like Milo will graduate in May and others start in summer. Remember, loi is a holder and enrollment is when they count.

i agree with this, 7 more spots left.

I would say that historically UM always comes up short to the max nbr. Not sure why. Is it mandated or perhaps a budget thing being a private school. Hopefully Manny changes this process as well.

As for needs in my opinion:
Addtl QB as either Perry or Weldon will leave
Addtl TE as either Irvin or Polendy leaves
OL-need two more(2-3 jags exist that need to move)
WR-done
DT-need two more
DE- min of one but two is ideal
LB-one
Safety-one
Corner-two

If you consider the possible transfers out, nbrs will not be an issue. Just get more talent!
