I am not defending the man..BUT

the majority of canes fans, myself included, felt Guidry was a good coordinator based on his season last year with a vastly more talented defense.

Now the fanbase wants him axed.

I’m playing devils advocate here. Is he really to blame? Or is “recruiting ace” Cristobal to blame for not finding adequate “jimmys and joes”?

I think it’s the latter. i think our talent on defense was worse than we all thought going into this year.

I don’t think this is the worst take. Safeties and lbs were awful and dbs were sus. But to me that falls on the owner of the unit. Just like any business. If a unit doesn’t have the right personnel it’s on the leader.
Yes… but our head coach is widely regarded as a great collector of talent…well, he has done a poor job of that on the defensive side of the ball, which is clear. Unless he makes some EXCELLENT portal acquisitions, I’m afraid next year will be more of the same, regardless of who the coordinator is

No he was bad this year and needs to go. Players don’t want to play for him, coaches don’t want to coach with him, and he refused to make any adjustments to help his guys out. Move on

He had a solid year last year but I’m starting to think that was more so because of the strong veteran presence we had on that side of the ball. And even then his flaws started to show as we got to the end of the season. This year was a younger squad that needed savvy coaching to be competitive and he couldn’t deliver. I think he probably hit his coaching ceiling.

As far as talent goes, it’s obvious we need an infusion on defense. But you should not need a ton of blue chip recruits to put together an average defense. The other schools in our conference didn’t

My concern meter is extremely high. Trenches will always be strong, especially o line. But we’re probably a 9-3 10-2 ceiling organization. No reason to think differently after seeing us waste Cam.

I think our d line wasn’t as bad as it seemed this year, especially Bain. He kind of disappeared this year, but i think that’s a result of the LBs and secondary being so putrid.

Guidry also showed some of these same issues last year. The Louisville game comes to mind of the top of my head
There were definitely bad defensive moments, but I think most of us felt like the defense was good last year, it was the offense that was terrible. We lost key guys to the nfl and didn't have replacements that were even serviceable. That falls on Mario IMO.

Guidry is:

Probably a good X and O coach with guys who can execute his system.
Not a good recruiter.
Doesn't looks like he's very creative on D when there are holes.

What was most concerning to me was his lack of ability to make adjustments at the safety level to cover up the flaws. Why trot Jaden Harris out there all season long when you know he's a liability at pretty much every level? No accountability for him continuing to lose discipline as a safety. There should be zero tolerance for a safety constantly letting guys behind him when he's the last line of defense. If Harris can't do that there has to be somebody on D who can.

And the same with the DL and stunting. It was obvious our DL had the talent to just straight up 4 man rush QBs and get plenty of pressure. The stunting just gave the QB and offenses more time to develop yet he still did it way too frequently.

We actually did lose a lot of players from last year's defense when you look at production (we lost 8 of our top 11 tacklers). But when you look at the list it doesn't look like any of the players we lost were irreplaceable. But maybe just the combination of so much inexperience, especially in the secondary, is what hurt us.

Also another observation: Mauigoa's sack number went down from 7.5 to 2. Whatever Guidry did differently with him this year was a huge disservice. He needs to be playing downhill.

Yea....Every week I hoped they had a meeting and acknowledged how bad the D was and they needed to get really creative to mask some of the holes..but it never seemed to happen (or it just didn't work). I also don't recall any second half adjustments that made a difference either.

I do think his axing is inevitable at this point because of how bad the D was, he's an easy target. my point is that hiring a new coordinator isn't going to be a magic fix...Mario didn't do his job as a talent accumulator on D, and I think that's the bigger reason we are in this mess.

If kids don't want to play for/learn from the DC, then it doesn't matter how good of a recruiter Mario is.
