Riley Williams Portal

You think a 6’7 265 pound TE and a 6’1 235 pound TE play the same position and do the same things?
Don’t do it man. The Calitrap is a real phenomena.

That 2023 class 😳

I wonder if anyone yet has done a deep dive on HS classes across the board for quality post portal. Like by way of example Oregon signed 29 players in 2023, 3 more than us.

In order of ranking/2024 stats:

J. ****ey WR/ 0 catches (1 total for career)
Matayo Uiagelelei DE/ 37 tackles 10 sacks
Kenyon Sadiq TE/ 23 catches 290 yds 2 td
Rodrick Pleasant CB/ 1 tackle
Blake Purchase LB/edge / 1 tackle and .5 sack
Daylen Austin CB/ 10 tackles
Austion Novosad QB/ 2/2 for 7 yards
Johnny Bowens DL/ 0 stats, transfer to UTSA
Dante Dowdell RB / transfer to wisky 143 carries 614 yds
Terrance Green DL / 3 tackles 1 sack
Teitum Tuioti edge / 28 tackles 5 sacks
Ashton Cozart WR / Transfer to SMU
Cole Martin CB / Transfer to ASU
George Silva OL / didnt appear in a game
Ashton Porter LB/ 1 tackle .5 sack
Genrnorris Wilson OL / didnt appear in a game
Kodi Decambra S / transfer to UNLV
Jayden Limar RB / 23 carries 67 yards
Amauri Washington DL / 4 tackles
Iapani Laloulou OL / didnt appear in a game
Jerry Mixon LB / 3 tackles
MyKeil Gardner DL / didnt appear in a game
Jaeden Moore LB / 1 tackle .5 sacks
Solomon Davis WR / transfer to Central Michigan
Collin Gill CB / transfer to UGA
Tevita Pome DL / transfer to orgeon state
Tyler Turner CB / 2 tackles
Bryce Boulton OL / didnt appear
Lipe Moala OL / Didnt appear

I mean... on paper that looks pretty bad, worse than our class. I would say Bain is on par with Matayo, we have a stud OL, Riley Williams is prob takin Kenyon Sadiq's job. Not saying that its an excuse but it just seems like HS classes across the country fall apart with the portal.

One is a true TE and one is an H back. Schott is coming here to play H back and Gilbert is coming here to play TE. Gilbert may be ready to take that role but I’d prefer a bridge to him.
Gilbert is going to play early and will be a monster down the road

Then he’ll transfer

What exactly do you think each guy can and can't be asked to do? Lofton can do it all as a TE, height be dammed.

If your point is merely that we need a TE2, sure. But this isn't like we are going into the season with McCormick as the starter who literally can't be used as a receiving threat. Cause Lofton is and can be an In-line TE. He can be flexed out. He can line up in the backfield H-back role

I think you're basically trying to pigeon hole Lofton into just being a gadget guy that can't serve as a TE1 while Riley could basically... I think Lofton was winning the starting job this off-season personally

I mean you can see with your own eyes why it was thought he’d be next man up. Are you really going downplay the lost of him?

Brother, I said, at worst he's 2TE. But you can also see with your eyes that he wasn't a target for the offense for whatever reason.

He didn't play against Syracuse (that I remember). In our last 6 games (when we were fighting for our lives to get into CFP), he had 2 catches for 29 yards. I don't like losing players on the two-deep, but his production is absolutely replaceable, brother.
