Remember the Time

Other than that, how did you enjoy the play Mrs Lincoln??

Sorry not disagreeing with your point but this line just reminded me of that:

“outside of the 4 INTs, that was NOT a horrible stat line.”

😂

I stand by that line 100%.

We have since learned about the way that Pedophile Sandusky was instructing his defense to hit Testaverde on every play. And Testaverde was coming off of an injury and had not played in 7 weeks.

So, yeah, a few picks? Big deal. We were tied OR AHEAD for nearly the entire game. We were making yardage and first downs. For people to claim, with absolute certainty, that we should be running instead of passing is just silly.

Pedo State was good. Not "should have won the game good", but good.

1st Pedo State drive - good lord, those two sacks were a thing of beauty.
1st Miami drive - Michael Irvin with a first down, Charles Henry (TE) with a first down, then Henry drops a 4th down pass; all the damage done with passing, almost no running
2nd Pedo State drive - they picked up a first down with a run, then punted
2nd Miami drive - drop by Irvin, Bratton with a first down pass, Highsmith fumbles on a run (recovered by Miami), long completion to Irvin followed by a fumble that is recovered by Pedo State; all the damage done with passing, almost no running, unfortunate fumble by Irvin
3rd Pedo State drive - garbage, no first downs, punt
3rd Miami drive - Testaverde scrambles for 21 on 3rd and 16, Highsmith with a first down pass, Perriman with a first down, FIRST INT at the beginning of second quarter

4th Pedo State drive - garbage, no first downs, punt
4th Miami drive - rushing first down on 3rd and 1, Blades with a first down, Blades with another first down, Warren Williams drops an easy catch for a first down, punt
5th Pedo State drive - DJ Dozier with a 19 yard run, Dozier then fumbles (recovers himself) and then Shaffer is hit and Hawkins intercepts the ball.
5th Miami drive - Highsmith runs for 8, then for another 8 to pick up a first down, and then Bratton has one of his patented 1 yard vaults for a touchdown; this is the first UM drive to have good runs by the running backs, halfway through the 2nd quarter
6th Pedo State drive - Dozier rushes for a first down, then Shaffer throws for his FIRST passing first down, then the fullback busts one for 20, then Shaffer gets his SECOND passing first down by hitting the fullback, then the fullback fumbles a first down run (recovered by Pedo State), and finally Shaffer scrambles to score a touchdown; surprising passing success overall, but about a 50-50 run-pass drive
6th Miami drive (1:07 left in half) - Perriman with a first down, Blades with a first down, Testaverde fumbles (rec. by Patchan) for a 2 yard loss, Irvin with a first down that is called back for an ineligible receiver downfield, 18 yard run by Highsmith as time expires; so at halftime, the passing game is dominant and half of the rushing yards have come from a QB scramble and a meaningless run at the end of the half

7th Miami drive - Highsmith drops an easy first down pass, Irvin drops an easy first down pass, punt
7th Pedo State drive - Shaffer fumbles snap (Pedo State recovers), punt
8th Miami drive - Perriman catch but tackled short of first down, punt
8th Pedo State drive - Dozier with a 15 yard run, Sileo gives up a first down with an offsides penalty, Selwyn Brown intercepts Shaffer
9th Miami drive - 7 yard run by Highsmith, Warren Williams first down pass, 7 yard pass to Henry short of the first down, 2nd Testaverde INT to Conlan
9th Pedo State drive - no first downs, and as soon as the TV announcer mentions that Pedo State has not lost many fumbles, they fumble and Miami recovers
10th Miami drive - Testaverde sacked, defensive PI on Irvin, Seelig misses an easy FG due to a bad snap by Pigza and a bad hold by Kintigh

10th Pedo State drive - garbage, no first downs, punt

11th Miami drive - Highsmith with a first down pass, Testaverde's 3rd INT early in the 4th quarter
11th Pedo State drive - garbage, no first downs, Manca badly misses a FG that would have been his career-long (50 yards)
12th Miami drive - Bratton with a first down catch, Highsmith with a nifty 7 yard rush, followed by a 21 yard rush before going out with an injury, completion to Bratton that comes up short, Seelig hits a FG
12th Pedo State drive - Shaffer sacked by Rod Carter, punt
13th Miami drive - Nice 13 yard run by Bratton, Testaverde's 4th INT goes down to the 5 yard line (Conlan), which is the only INT that led to a Pedo State score
13th Pedo State drive - bad snap (recovered by Pedo State), Dozier 6 yard run for TD
14th Miami drive - Highsmith with a solid 22 yard run, Bratton goes out with injury, completion to TE Alfredo Roberts which is fumbled at midfield

14th Pedo State drive - garbage, no first downs, punt (8th punt)
15th Miami drive - OFFENSIVE PI on Miami, dropped pass by Alfredo Roberts, punt
15th Pedo State drive - garbage, no first downs, punt (9th punt)
16th Miami drive - only rush is a QB scramble, Bratton drops a long pass, 31 yard completion to Blades for a first down (on 4th down) followed by a 6 yard completion to Blades, then a first down completion to Perriman, then a 3 yard completion to Irvin followed by a first down completion to Irvin just inside the 10 yard line, and then a 4 yard completion to Irvin, before Testaverde is sacked, then throws his 5th INT on 4th down
16th Pedo State drive - Victory Formation

Nobody is excusing Testaverde's 5 INTs. But we did NOT have some dominant rushing game. We had 6 or 8 solid runs by our running backs. That's it. The idea that "Penn State can't stop our run" was just not true. We had two critical fumbles and a disastrous missed FG. Plus the dropped balls and the penalties.

Those are the things that truly cost us the game.

That’s still a significant amount even then. The 86 team averaged 78 plays per game.

Fair.

But the incompletions. Testaverde was 26-50 and Shaffer was 5-16. That's 35 incompletions, and a lot of clock stoppage.

Can y’all stop trying to compare Mario to guys who were coordinators? Mario only knows O line play. Big difference. When either side of the ball is struggling, Mario can’t help. Kirby was the best defensive coordinator in the country for a long time. The situations aren’t similar at all. Not even close. Not to mention Kirby’s classes **** on every single one of Mario’s.

Uh Kirby Smart went 8-5 year 1 and then proceeded to go…

13-2
11-3
12-2
8-2 (Covid)
14-1
15-0
14-1

lol at this attempt at a comparison simply because of recruiting. If anything, it highlights how imperative it is for Mario to win double digit games in Year 3, when most other coaches have been able to do it within 2 years. Kirby went 7-1 in the SEC year two, Mario won 7 games overall year 2.

The time is now. Not next year, not two years. Now.
The recruiting machine at UGa has always been the same. They have been playing the bama game since before Saban. Now they have had success it will continue to grow, but like Tuscaloosa, Athens is still Athens.

No. There was definitely a learning curve. Vinny wasn’t the QB in 1984.

True.

Even worse, Bernie was the QB, so one might have expected such a smart and talented QB to lead a defending champ to more wins in 1984, regardless of who the coach was.
