Remember the Time

He was against PSU in the Fiesta Bowl when we should have been running the ball instead of letting Testaverde throw it.
He wasn’t calling plays but I get it that the head coach always gets the blame for those types of things.

Agree however Miami is not recruiting to the same level Georgia was when everyone was saying that. They were stringing together multiple top 3 classes with multiple 5-stars every class.... we're recruiting well but not to that level. Hopefully that changes with a winning season, Mario is a beast on the trail
If you are recruiting top10 classes year in and year out you can win ships. May be even top 15

3:07 left in the game, 2 timeouts left

1st and 10 - UM 23 yard line - drop back to pass, Testaverde run for 4 yards
1nd and 6 - UM 27 yard line - incomplete pass (almost intercepted)
3rd and 6 - UM 27 yard line - incomplete pass
4th and 6 - UM 27 yard line - 31 yard pass to Blades
1st and 10 - PSU 42 yard line - 7 yard pass to Blades
2nd and 3 - PSU 35 yard line - 9 yard pass to Perriman
1st and 10 - PSU 26 yard line - 4 yard pass to Irvin (slips and falls)
2nd and 6 - PSU 22 yard line - 13 yard pass to Irvin
1st and goal - PSU 9 yard line - 3 yard pass to Irvin
2nd and goal - PSU 6 yard line - Testaverde sacked at the 13 - 25 seconds left - 1 TO left
3rd and goal - PSU 13 yard line - incomplete pass - 18 seconds left
4th and goal - PSU 13 yard line - interception

Twelve plays. Four full clock stoppages (three incompletions, one timeout). Three temporary clock stoppages (three first downs).

So, again, I ask people...

1. WHEN were we supposed to run the ball? When we were 77 yards away? Or when we were 13 yards away with 25 seconds and one timeout?
2. What is the issue with Testaverde throwing at that point? He only had one negative-yardage play on the final drive, a sack. He moved us 71 yards down the field in 2.5 minutes before the sack.
3. Even if Testaverde urged JJ to pass instead of run during the timeout, I'm not sure what a run would have done. We were at the 13 with 25 seconds left and on 3rd down. We were down by 4 points, we couldn't kick a FG. So if we run and don't make it 13 yards, we go to 4th and goal. Not sure why anyone thinks we should have run on that down.

At the beginning of the final drive, Testaverde's stats were:

20-40 for 218 yards with 0 TDs and 4 INTs

Just before the final INT, the stats were:

26-49 for 285 yards with 0 TDs and 4 INTs

It was the 1986 season, outside of the 4 INTs, that was NOT a horrible stat line. If Testaverde throws a TD on that final pass, he goes 27-50 for 298 yards and wins the National Championship.

I am still unclear as to when and how we should have been running the ball on the final drive. We never had time AND yardage on our side to be able to run.

Regardless of "who" was calling the plays, JJ still had a questionable coaching/big-game rep until he was carrried off the field in 1988.

Remember the time on this board when we clowned Kirby Smart and called him a corch, a bad game day coach. Remember the time. All that time Kirby said nothing, but quietly recruited his butt off. He dedicated himself to stacking ship while we mocked. Today he is a winner with the most elite players. Today he is gawd in our eyes. That’s how life can be. Never give up on any one as long as they work hard.
Ain’t no way you woke up today thinking about this

Time will tell. Fingers crossed and this year will be the start of something BIG

Not on the final drive, but throughout the whole game. They could not stop our running game. You are right we had to throw on the final drive, but we would not have been behind if we ran the ball down their throats. I live 25 minutes from PSU campus & when that game comes up, their fans always say to me, why didn't you run the ball.

I mean...

We ran nearly 50% of the time (43 runs to 50 passes, and yes I realize that a couple of those "runs" might have been scrambles or sacks). But we ran for less than 4 yards per rushing attempt. It's not some kind of wild disparity in the success rate. Even factoring in the passing ATTEMPTS, we were getting nearly 6 yards per pass attempt, compared to less than 4 yards per rush.

The INTs killed us. Plus Alfredo's fumble (of a completed pass) on the second-to-last drive.

I'd also point out that we were never behind in the game until the 8:13 mark of the 4th quarter.

Next time someone from Pedo State asks you why we didn't run the ball more, ask them why they didn't stop Sandusky from raping young boys.

Two bowl games. 9 INT’s. A coach can only do so much.

mans said he recruited his *** off.
Kirby smart allowed the boosters n bag men richt was scared to use fully to go crazy...because of ncaa cover n not having to worry about getting in trouble to get it started.

Brought the full bama program of bags and unlimited coaches to UGA.....

Im waiting for Mario to do the damnn same.

I never said that and any screenchots showing that I did are fake news

I would’ve given my left toe for us to pursue Kirby with same resources we did Mario when he was on the market. I never really doubted what Kirby would do at GA because he was a recruiter & had a great track record in his area of expertise. Didn’t expect multiple nattys but annually a top 5 progrum easily..he took that Saban formula and brought it to UGA. And it all started in the trenches especially the defensive front 7..Mario same sort of story. Great recruiter who was around Saban, did his thing at Oregon and now has laid a foundation here.

Other "bad game day coaches":

Jimmy Johnson
Butch Davis

We should have fired those bums early...

Even JJ had that abysmal 84 season, though it can be argued he was being undermined by Schnellenberger's hold overs he was forced to retain.

It can be argued he messed up letting Testaverde throw instead of handoff to Highsmith all game in that NC game against PSU.

We all know about Butch's game day shortcomings.

At some point we were just able to out talent everyone because of their recruiting, talent evaluation, and development. Mario seems to be cut from that same cloth. (Hopefully)
